Chapter 15: The Enemy Within

Chapter 14: Blood Is Not the Same as Family
Silence settled over the underground operations center.
Every eye remained fixed on the security monitor.
The silver-haired man standing beside Richard Whitlock looked calm, almost amused.
Daniel couldn't look away.
The resemblance was undeniable.
The same sharp jawline.
The same gray eyes.
The same quiet confidence that Daniel saw every morning in the mirror.
Victor Carver.
The uncle he had mourned his entire life.

The man his father claimed had died in a boating accident twenty-five years earlier.
Samuel Monroe folded his arms.
"I hoped we'd have more time."
Daniel slowly turned toward him.
"You knew he was alive."
"Yes."
"You never told me."
"I couldn't."
"Why?"
"Because Victor has spent twenty-five years eliminating anyone who discovered the truth."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"My father lied to me."
"No."
Samuel shook his head.
"Anthony lied to protect you."
Outside the bunker, Victor adjusted the cuffs of his black overcoat.
Richard Whitlock stood beside him.
"They're inside."
Victor glanced toward the concealed entrance hidden beneath the abandoned chapel.
"I know."
Richard frowned.
"My men are ready."
Victor smiled faintly.
"And that's why they will fail."
Richard looked confused.
"What do you mean?"
Victor's eyes remained on the forest.
"Daniel was trained by Anthony."
"He won't defend the bunker the way an ordinary man would."
Richard crossed his arms.
"Then what do you suggest?"
Victor answered calmly.
"We don't attack."
"We invite him."
Richard stared.
"Invite him?"
Victor reached into his pocket and removed an old silver pocket watch.
The initials engraved on the cover read:
A.C.
Anthony Carver.
"I believe my nephew deserves some answers."
Inside the bunker, Hannah watched Daniel pace across the room.
He hadn't spoken in nearly five minutes.
Finally, she stepped beside him.
"What are you thinking?"
He stopped.
"My father."
"He loved you."
"I know."
"But why hide something this important?"
Samuel answered before Hannah could.
"Because Victor wasn't just Anthony's brother."
"He was his partner."
Daniel looked up sharply.
"What?"
Samuel sighed.
"When the Carver family inherited the waterfront business, Anthony and Victor built it together."
"They were brilliant."
"They expanded faster than anyone thought possible."
"But Victor wanted more."
"He wanted power."
"Money."
"Control."
Daniel remained silent.
Samuel continued.
"Anthony wanted a legitimate business."
"Victor wanted an empire."
"When Anthony refused to help smuggle weapons and launder money, Victor created a second network behind his back."
Hannah suddenly understood.
"The hidden accounts."
Samuel nodded.
"Exactly."
"Victor forged Anthony's signature."
"He used the Carver name to build a criminal empire."
Daniel whispered,
"And everyone blamed my father."
Samuel walked toward a steel cabinet.
He removed a thick leather binder.
"This belonged to Anthony."
Daniel carefully accepted it.
Inside were dozens of handwritten journal entries.
The first page was dated twenty-four years earlier.
His father's handwriting filled every line.
Daniel read aloud.
If anyone ever reads this, know one thing.
My greatest mistake was believing blood would always choose blood.
Victor is my brother.
But he stopped being family the day he chose greed over innocent lives.
Daniel slowly turned the page.
Another entry.
I have sent Hannah Monroe and her mother into hiding with Samuel.
If Victor discovers the child is alive, he will use her one day against Caleb.
Hannah froze.
"My mother..."
Samuel nodded quietly.
"She didn't know the whole truth."
"You protected us."
"I tried."
Tears filled Hannah's eyes.
"My father wasn't dead."
"No."
Samuel's voice broke.
"But staying away was the only way I knew to keep you alive."
For the first time since seeing him again, Hannah saw not a man who had abandoned his family—
But a father who had sacrificed everything to save it.
Suddenly, every monitor in the operations center flickered.
Then the screens turned black.
A single image appeared.
Victor Carver.
Live.
He looked directly into the camera.
"Good evening, Daniel."
Nobody spoke.
Victor smiled.
"You've grown into the man your father hoped you would become."
Daniel stepped closer to the monitor.
"What do you want?"
Victor tilted his head.
"To meet my nephew."
"I'd rather not."
"I expected that answer."
Victor reached into his coat.
He held up the silver pocket watch.
Daniel immediately recognized it.
"My father's watch."
"It was."
Victor smiled.
"He gave it to me the night we said goodbye."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"You murdered him."
Victor's expression remained calm.
"No."
"Anthony died because he believed people could change."
"He was wrong."
Daniel's voice turned icy.
"If you harmed my father..."
Victor interrupted him.
"You deserve the truth."
"So does Hannah."
He paused before delivering the words that stunned everyone in the room.
"Aaron Brooks wasn't supposed to die."
Hannah's breath caught.
Victor continued.
"My orders were simple."
"Recover the ledger."
"Silence Caleb."
"Aaron was never part of the plan."
Richard Whitlock looked surprised.
"You never told me that."
Victor glanced at him with quiet disappointment.
"Because you don't need to know everything."
Hannah stepped forward.
"Then who killed my husband?"
Victor looked directly into her eyes.
"I don't know."
The room fell silent.
Richard frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Victor turned toward him.
"I ordered my men to bring Aaron to me alive."
"They never did."
Daniel understood before anyone else.
"Someone disobeyed your orders."
Victor nodded.
"Someone wanted Aaron dead."
Samuel's face hardened.
"The traitor."
Victor smiled faintly.
"Exactly."
"The same traitor Caleb warned you about."
Daniel slowly reached into his pocket and removed Caleb's memory card.
"If the traitor is still alive..."
Victor finished the sentence.
"...then none of us know who we're really fighting."
For the first time since this nightmare began, the lines between ally and enemy blurred.
Victor Carver was responsible for decades of corruption.
Richard Whitlock had carried out countless crimes.
Yet even Victor admitted there was someone else—
Someone hidden.
Someone powerful enough to ignore his direct orders.
Someone who had murdered Aaron Brooks without permission.
As the screen flickered, Victor spoke one final sentence before the transmission ended.
"Find the traitor before he finds Hannah."
The monitors went dark.
At that exact moment, one of Daniel's security guards collapsed to the floor.
A tranquilizer dart protruded from his neck.
The bunker lights shut off.
Emergency sirens blared.
And from somewhere inside the operations center...
A familiar voice calmly said,
"You should have listened to Caleb."
May you like
The traitor wasn't outside.
He had been inside the bunker all along.
