Chapter 1: The Secret Behind the Protection

Chapter 1: The Secret Behind the Protection
Hannah Brooks had spent five months inside the Carver mansion pretending to be invisible.
She lowered her eyes when wealthy guests walked past.
She kept her voice quiet.
She wore simple black uniforms and carried trays of expensive meals she would never be allowed to taste.
To everyone inside the mansion, she was just another servant.

A woman with no power.
A woman nobody would remember.
But Daniel Carver remembered her.
And after that night, everyone else would too.
The moment Daniel placed his jacket around Hannah’s shoulders, the entire ballroom changed.
The guests who had laughed moments earlier suddenly became silent.
Claire Whitlock’s confidence disappeared.
She had expected Daniel to be amused.
She had expected him to ignore a servant being humiliated.
After all, that was how things worked in her world.
Powerful people protected powerful people.
Not women like Hannah.
But Claire had made one mistake.
She never bothered to find out who Hannah really was.
“Daniel,” Claire said again, forcing a laugh. “You’re making this dramatic. It was only a little joke.”
Daniel slowly turned toward her.
“A joke?”
His voice was quiet.
That made it worse.
Claire swallowed.
“She was being disrespectful.”
Hannah looked down.
She knew this game.
People like Claire never admitted cruelty.
They simply changed the story until they became the victim.
“She refused to answer when I spoke to her,” Claire continued. “She acted like she was above the staff.”
Daniel looked at Hannah.
“Is that true?”
Hannah hesitated.
She could lie.
She could protect herself.
But something about Daniel’s expression stopped her.
“No,” she whispered.
The room became even quieter.
Claire’s face hardened.
“She’s lying.”
Daniel ignored her.
“What happened?”
Hannah looked at the floor.
“I was bringing drinks to the guests. Miss Whitlock said my appearance was embarrassing for the house.”
She touched the uneven section of her hair.
“She said a servant representing the Carver family should look more presentable.”
Claire crossed her arms.
“And I corrected the problem.”
Daniel’s eyes turned cold.
“You cut her hair.”
“Yes.”
“While she is pregnant.”
Claire looked annoyed.
“It’s hair, Daniel.”
Daniel took one step toward her.
“No.”
His voice carried through the ballroom.
“It was never about hair.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
“It was about making someone powerless feel smaller because you thought nobody would stop you.”
Claire’s expression changed.
For the first time that evening, she looked uncertain.
Daniel turned toward Martin.
“Call Dr. Bennett.”
Martin immediately nodded.
“Yes, sir.”
Hannah looked confused.
“I don’t need a doctor.”
Daniel looked at her.
“That wasn’t a question.”
Something about his tone made her stop arguing.
The truth was, she did feel strange.
The pain in her stomach had faded, but fear remained.
She had spent months hiding.
She could not afford attention.
Especially not from Daniel Carver.
Because Daniel was the one person she had entered this mansion to investigate.
The man everyone believed controlled Providence.
The man whose name appeared near every secret involving the waterfront.
The man who might know what happened to Aaron.
And Caleb.
She had never expected him to protect her.
That made everything more complicated.
An hour later, Hannah sat in a private guest room while a doctor examined her.
Daniel stood near the window.
Silent.
Watching.
“You’re healthy,” Dr. Bennett said after finishing the checkup. “The baby is fine. But you need rest.”
Hannah released a breath.
“Thank you.”
The doctor packed his things.
Before leaving, he looked at Daniel.
“Stress is dangerous at this stage.”
Daniel nodded.
“I understand.”
After the doctor left, silence filled the room.
Hannah pulled the jacket from her shoulders.
“Thank you for helping me.”
Daniel looked at the jacket.
“You’re welcome.”
She carefully folded it.
“I’ll return this.”
“Keep it.”
“That isn’t necessary.”
“I know.”
Their eyes met.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Daniel asked:
“What is your real name?”
Hannah froze.
Her fingers tightened around the jacket.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
Fear moved through her chest.
Had he discovered everything?
Had someone exposed her?
“I don’t understand.”
Daniel walked closer.
“You’ve worked here for five months.”
His voice remained calm.
“But your background check has gaps.”
Hannah said nothing.
“You never talk about your family.”
Silence.
“You never complain.”
Still silence.
“And every time someone mentions Aaron Brooks’ death, you leave the room.”
Her heart stopped.
Daniel knew.
Or at least he suspected.
“Why are you here, Hannah?”
The question she had feared finally arrived.
She looked into the eyes of the most dangerous man in Providence.
And for the first time, she decided not to hide.
“I came here to find out who killed my husband.”
Daniel’s expression changed slightly.
Not surprise.
Something deeper.
Recognition.
Because he knew that name.
May you like
Aaron Brooks.
And he knew the truth about his death was far more complicated than Hannah realized.
