Chapter 17: The Detective Who Refused to Die

Chapter 16: The Voice Behind the Apology
No one spoke after the surveillance footage ended.
The frozen image of Aaron lying on the loading dock remained on the monitor.
Hannah stared at it until her vision blurred with tears.
She had spent eight months imagining her husband's final moments.
She had pictured fear.
Pain.

Loneliness.
Instead, she had seen something even more heartbreaking.
Trust.
Aaron had smiled.
He had recognized the person standing in front of him.
And that person had betrayed him.
Daniel quietly switched off the monitor.
"We're going to find whoever did this."
Hannah wiped her eyes.
"I don't want revenge anymore."
Daniel looked at her.
"I want the truth."
He nodded.
"So do I."
Ethan replayed the damaged video frame by frame.
"The face is impossible to recover," he said.
"The camera resolution is too low."
Samuel leaned over his shoulder.
"What about the audio?"
Ethan isolated the final seconds.
Static crackled through the speakers.
Aaron's weak breathing.
Footsteps.
Then the mysterious voice.
"I'm..."
More static.
"...sorry."
Martin frowned.
"Can you clean it up?"
"I'll try."
Ethan connected specialized software to the surveillance system.
Minutes passed.
The computer slowly filtered away layers of interference.
Finally...
A clearer version played through the speakers.
"I'm sorry, Aaron."
The room fell silent.
Daniel frowned.
"That's all?"
Ethan shook his head.
"No."
"Listen carefully."
He replayed the clip.
This time everyone noticed something else.
A faint sound in the background.
A bell.
It rang exactly three times.
Samuel's expression changed.
"I know that bell."
Everyone looked at him.
"Where?"
"It's not a church."
"It's a harbor clock."
"There used to be an old shipping tower with a bronze bell."
Daniel immediately understood.
"Pier Nine."
Samuel nodded.
"It rings every hour."
Martin looked confused.
"But Aaron was killed at Pier Eleven."
Daniel slowly shook his head.
"No."
"The official report said that."
He looked at Ethan.
"The report was false."
While Daniel's team analyzed the recording, Richard Whitlock sat alone in his office.
Victor Carver entered without knocking.
Richard poured him a glass of whiskey.
"You lied to me."
Victor accepted the glass but didn't drink.
"About what?"
"Aaron."
"You said he wasn't supposed to die."
"That's true."
Richard slammed his glass onto the desk.
"My men followed every order."
Victor's expression remained calm.
"No."
"They followed someone else's."
Richard stared at him.
"You think there's another traitor?"
Victor smiled without warmth.
"I know there is."
"Who?"
"If I knew..."
Victor looked out the window.
"...I'd already have them killed."
Back at the bunker, Hannah sat alone with Aaron's journal.
She slowly reread every page.
She noticed something she had overlooked before.
Aaron never wrote dates beside the final three entries.
Instead...
He wrote times.
8:15 p.m.
9:40 p.m.
10:42 p.m.
Hannah frowned.
"Daniel."
He walked over.
"What is it?"
She pointed at the journal.
"He wasn't tracking days."
"He was tracking one night."
Daniel examined the entries.
The final time—
10:42 p.m.—
Matched the surveillance video.
Aaron had been documenting everything as events unfolded.
"What happened at 8:15?" Daniel asked.
Hannah read aloud.
Met with C.
He finally believes me.
"C?" Martin asked.
"Caleb?" Hannah guessed.
Daniel wasn't convinced.
"The next entry?"
She continued.
9:40 p.m.
Meeting moved. Someone changed the location.
Only four people know where we're going.
Daniel looked up sharply.
"Only four."
Ethan immediately grabbed a notepad.
"Aaron."
"Caleb."
"You."
Daniel nodded.
"And whoever arranged the meeting."
Hannah slowly finished the final entry.
10:42 p.m.
If I'm wrong about him... forgive me.
Silence.
Martin whispered,
"Him."
Daniel stared at the page.
"Aaron suspected a man."
Just then, Samuel entered carrying another old storage box.
"I almost forgot."
"I found this hidden behind one of the server racks."
Inside were dozens of cassette tapes.
Old-fashioned audio recordings.
Each labeled in Caleb's handwriting.
One tape stood out.
Meeting — October 14
Ethan carefully inserted it into an old cassette player.
The tape hissed.
Then voices emerged.
Aaron.
Caleb.
And a third man.
The recording was muffled, but understandable.
Aaron spoke first.
"I don't like changing the meeting place."
The third man answered calmly.
"It's safer this way."
Caleb sounded uneasy.
"Are you sure no one followed you?"
"I'm sure."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"I know that voice."
The tape continued.
Aaron laughed softly.
"I trust you."
The room became perfectly still.
Three seconds later—
Gunshots exploded through the recording.
Someone shouted.
The tape cut off.
Daniel slowly closed his eyes.
He recognized the voice.
He had heard it almost every day for years.
Martin looked at him.
"Daniel..."
"You know who it is."
Daniel opened his eyes.
"I think I do."
"Who?"
He hesitated.
"I need proof before I say the name."
At that same moment, hundreds of miles away, Detective Laura Bennett received an anonymous package at her office.
Inside was a single flash drive.
No return address.
No note.
She inserted it into her computer.
A security video immediately began playing.
Unlike the damaged footage Daniel had found...
This recording was crystal clear.
Laura leaned closer.
The camera showed Aaron meeting a man beneath the lights of Pier Nine.
She could see his face perfectly.
Laura's eyes widened.
"Oh my God..."
She reached for her phone.
But before she could dial Daniel's secure number—
The lights inside her office suddenly went out.
Someone had cut the building's power.
A shadow appeared in the doorway.
Laura slowly stood.
"Who's there?"
No answer.
Only the soft click of the office door locking from the inside.

The killer had realized the final recording still existed.
And Detective Laura Bennett had just become the next target.
