Chapter 7: The Sniper Who Changed Everything

Chapter 7: The Sniper Who Changed Everything
A cold mist drifted across Providence Harbor as dawn broke over Pier 17.
The old shipping docks were deserted.
Rusted cranes stood motionless against the gray sky.
Daniel Carver arrived alone, just as the ransom note demanded.
He stepped out of his black sedan carrying a weathered leather folder beneath his arm.
His bodyguards had argued with him for nearly an hour.
He left them behind anyway.
If Ben was alive, Daniel wasn't willing to risk the boy's life.

He slowly scanned the empty pier.
"I’m here."
His voice echoed over the water.
"Show yourself."
For several seconds...
Nothing happened.
Then Richard Whitlock emerged from behind a stack of shipping containers, dressed in a tailored navy overcoat.
Two armed men walked beside him.
A third stood several yards away with a pistol aimed at Ben Carter, whose hands were tied behind his back.
The little boy's face brightened the moment he saw Daniel.
"Mr. Carver!"
"It's okay, Ben," Daniel said calmly. "I'm going to take you home."
Richard smiled.
"You've always been predictable."
Daniel's expression never changed.
"You wanted the letter."
"I did."
Daniel lifted the folder.
"It never left my possession."
Richard chuckled.
"I knew you'd bring it."
"You always did have a weakness."
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
"For family."
Richard's smile faded slightly.
"Don't pretend this child is family."
Daniel glanced at Ben.
"He is to me."
Ben fought back tears.
"Mr. Carver..."
Daniel gave him a reassuring nod.
"It's almost over."
Richard extended his hand.
"The letter."
Daniel didn't move.
"The boy first."
Richard laughed.
"You still think this is a negotiation?"
He snapped his fingers.
One of the gunmen pressed the barrel of his pistol against Ben's shoulder.
The child flinched but didn't cry.
Daniel's voice grew colder.
"If you hurt him..."
Richard interrupted.
"You'll do what?"
For a long moment, the two men stared at one another.
Then Daniel slowly tossed the folder across the concrete.
It slid to Richard's polished shoes.
Richard picked it up with obvious satisfaction.
He opened it.
Read the first page.
Then frowned.
His smile disappeared.
"This isn't the original."
Daniel remained silent.
Richard flipped through the remaining pages.
Blank paper.
Every page after the first was empty.
His face darkened.
"You made a copy."
"I never said I'd bring the original."
Richard looked up with barely controlled fury.
"You've become careless, Daniel."
"No."
Daniel took one step forward.
"I've become cautious."
Richard sighed.
"I was hoping to avoid this."
He nodded toward his men.
"Kill them both."
The gunmen raised their weapons.
Before anyone could fire—
A deafening crack split the morning air.
A sniper's bullet tore through the shoulder of the man holding Ben.
He collapsed instantly.
Chaos erupted.
Another shot rang out.
The second gunman fell beside a shipping container.
Richard spun around in shock.
"Where is he?"
A third shot shattered the windshield of an SUV behind him.
His remaining guards scattered for cover.
Daniel didn't hesitate.
He sprinted toward Ben.
"Stay down!"
Ben dropped to the ground as Daniel threw himself over the boy.
Bullets ricocheted off the concrete.
Whoever the sniper was...
They weren't missing.
Richard ducked behind a steel container.
"Find that shooter!"
His men searched the rooftops frantically.
Too late.
The sniper had already moved.
Half a mile away, atop an abandoned warehouse, a woman calmly disassembled a precision rifle.
She wore black tactical clothing and gloves.
Her long auburn hair was tied into a tight braid.
She checked her watch.
Exactly forty-seven seconds.
That was all she had needed.
A voice crackled through the earpiece hidden beneath her hair.
"Target protected."
She answered quietly.
"Good."
"What about Whitlock?"
"Not today."
She packed the rifle into a case.
"He needs to stay alive."
"For now."
Within moments, she disappeared down the fire escape before anyone reached the roof.
Back at the pier, police sirens echoed in the distance.
Richard realized he had lost control.
"Retreat!" he shouted.
His surviving guards rushed him toward a waiting boat.
Daniel stood and pulled Ben behind him.
"Stay close."
"I'm scared."
"I know."
"But you're safe now."
The boat's engines roared to life.
Richard climbed aboard, glaring at Daniel.
"This isn't over."
Daniel's voice carried across the water.
"It will be."
Richard smiled coldly.
"When Hannah learns who her husband really worked for..."
He paused.
"...she'll never forgive you."
Daniel's expression changed for the first time.
Richard noticed.
He laughed.
"So she doesn't know."
The boat sped away before Daniel could respond.
Ben looked up.
"What did he mean?"
Daniel remained silent.
Because Richard had just revealed something Daniel had hoped Hannah would never hear.
An hour later, everyone returned to the Carver mansion.
Hannah rushed toward Ben the moment he stepped through the front doors.
She wrapped him tightly in her arms.
"I was so worried."
"I'm okay."
Ben hugged her back.
"Mr. Carver saved me."
Hannah looked at Daniel.
"Thank you."
He nodded once.
"You don't have to thank me."
Martin noticed the fresh blood soaking through Daniel's sleeve.
"You're hurt."
"It's only a scratch."
"It doesn't look like one."
Daniel finally glanced down.
A bullet had grazed his upper arm during the rescue.
He hadn't even noticed.
Hannah immediately stepped forward.
"Sit down."
"I'm fine."
"Daniel."
Her tone left no room for argument.
For the first time since meeting her...
Daniel obeyed.
As Hannah carefully cleaned the wound, neither of them spoke.
Finally, she broke the silence.
"Richard said something."
Daniel looked away.
"He was trying to provoke me."
"Was he lying?"
Another silence.
Longer this time.
Hannah's heartbeat quickened.
"Daniel..."
She whispered.
"Did Aaron work for you?"
Daniel slowly closed his eyes.
"Yes."
The room became perfectly still.
Martin looked down.
Ben stopped smiling.
Hannah's hands froze.
For months she had searched for answers.
Now the first truth had finally arrived.
And it was only the beginning.
May you like
Daniel took a slow breath.
"But not in the way you think."
