CHAPTER 9 — THE SECRET INSIDE WHITMORE HOLDINGS

CHAPTER 9 — THE SECRET INSIDE WHITMORE HOLDINGS

The message stayed on Dominic Hale’s phone all night.

The Whitmore empire has a secret.

He read it again.

And again.

Every time, the same question returned.

Who sent it?

And why?

For the first time since losing his position, Dominic felt something he had almost forgotten.

A possibility.

A way out.

Maybe Evelyn wasn’t as untouchable as everyone believed.

Maybe there was something hidden.

Something that could change everything.

The next morning, Dominic met with a private investigator.

Not in a luxury restaurant.

Not in a high-end office.

A small coffee shop far from downtown.

The kind of place where nobody would recognize him.

The investigator placed a folder on the table.

“Dominic Hale?”

“Yes.”

“You asked me to look into Whitmore Holdings.”

Dominic nodded.

“I need information.”

The investigator looked at him carefully.

“About what?”

“Anything Evelyn is hiding.”

A pause.

“You believe she has secrets?”

Dominic looked out the window.

“Everyone has secrets.”

The investigator opened the folder.

“I found something interesting.”

Dominic leaned forward.

“What?”

“Twenty years ago, before Whitmore Holdings became what it is today, there was a private investment agreement.”

Dominic frowned.

“Between who?”

The investigator looked at the document.

“Evelyn Whitmore and a group of unknown investors.”

“Unknown?”

“Yes.”

“The records were sealed.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

“That’s the interesting part.”

The investigator continued.

“Because the agreement created a private trust.”

Dominic stared.

“A trust?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

The investigator looked at him.

“For protecting the company if Evelyn was ever removed from leadership.”

A strange feeling moved through Dominic.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Evelyn planned for someone to try to take control.”

Dominic became silent.

The information was unexpected.

“She knew?”

The investigator nodded.

“She created a protection plan years ago.”

Meanwhile, Evelyn sat in her office reviewing another report.

Richard stood across from her.

“We confirmed the source of the leaked message.”

Evelyn looked up.

“Who?”

“An anonymous account connected to Dominic.”

She sighed.

“Of course.”

Richard looked confused.

“He’s trying to find weaknesses.”

“Yes.”

“And he believes there is a secret.”

Evelyn looked at the old documents on her desk.

“There is.”

Richard became serious.

“What secret?”

Evelyn remained quiet.

Then she said:

“The one thing Dominic never understood.”

“What?”

“Whitmore Holdings was never built on money.”

“It was built on responsibility.”

Years earlier, before the company became an international empire, Evelyn’s father had left her with a difficult choice.

Sell the company.

Or protect it.

At the time, Whitmore Holdings was struggling.

Many investors wanted control.

Many executives wanted quick profits.

But Evelyn refused.

She created a private ownership structure.

One that protected employees.

One that prevented hostile takeovers.

One that ensured the company could never be controlled by a single person acting out of greed.

The trust was her father’s final lesson.

“Power without responsibility destroys everything.”

Evelyn had remembered those words.

Dominic never had.

That afternoon, Dominic received another message.

You found the documents. Good.

His face changed.

Someone was watching.

He typed:

Who are you?

The reply came quickly.

Someone who knows Evelyn better than you do.

Dominic stared.

What do you want?

A minute passed.

Then:

The truth.

Later that evening, Dominic followed the instructions.

He arrived at an old private office building outside the city.

The place looked abandoned.

The lights were dim.

The hallway was empty.

He entered the room at the end.

And froze.

A man was sitting inside.

Someone he recognized.

“Impossible.”

The man looked up.

“Hello, Dominic.”

Dominic stepped back.

“How are you alive?”

The man smiled.

“Because Evelyn wanted everyone to believe I was gone.”

Dominic’s heart raced.

“Who are you?”

The man stood.

“My name is Daniel Whitmore.”

Dominic stared.

The name meant something.

Everyone in the business world knew it.

Daniel Whitmore.

Evelyn’s uncle.

The man who disappeared decades ago.

The man who was believed to have abandoned the family company.

“What are you doing here?”

Daniel smiled.

“The same thing you are.”

“Looking for the truth.”

Dominic was cautious.

“You contacted me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel walked toward the window.

“Because Evelyn has controlled the story for too long.”

Dominic listened.

“She told everyone she saved Whitmore Holdings.”

“But she never told them how.”

Dominic’s interest grew.

“What are you saying?”

Daniel looked at him.

“I’m saying your wife’s empire was built on a secret.”

The next morning, Evelyn received unexpected news.

Richard entered her office quickly.

“Evelyn.”

She immediately noticed his expression.

“What happened?”

“We found a problem.”

“What kind of problem?”

Richard placed a document on her desk.

“A company shareholder has filed a legal challenge.”

Evelyn opened it.

Her eyes narrowed.

The name at the bottom shocked her.

Daniel Whitmore.

For a moment, she said nothing.

Richard watched her.

“You know him.”

Evelyn slowly closed the document.

“Yes.”

“Who is he?”

She looked toward the window.

“The man who taught me everything about power.”

A pause.

“And the man who tried to take everything from me once before.”

That night, Dominic sat across from Daniel.

The older man poured two glasses of whiskey.

“You want to destroy Evelyn.”

Dominic looked at him.

“I want the truth.”

Daniel smiled.

“Good.”

“Because the truth is powerful.”

Dominic took the glass.

“What happens if the truth destroys her?”

Daniel looked toward the city.

“Then she was never as strong as everyone believed.”

But across town, Evelyn stood in her office.

Looking at the same city.

Holding the old family documents.

Because she knew exactly what was happening.

Daniel had returned.

Dominic had found him.

And the past she had buried for decades…

Was coming back.

But Evelyn also knew something they didn’t.

Daniel Whitmore might know the old secrets.

But he had forgotten one important thing.

She was no longer the young woman he once underestimated.

She was Evelyn Whitmore.

May you like

And she had survived worse than betrayal.

She had survived being underestimated.
