CHAPTER 2 — THE MORNING AFTER THE HUMILIATION

CHAPTER 2 — THE MORNING AFTER THE HUMILIATION
The sunrise over Las Vegas painted the city in gold.
From the fifty-second floor of the Sterling Crown Hotel, the view looked almost unreal.
The endless streets.
The glowing casinos.
The luxury buildings reaching toward the sky.
For most people, waking up in the Presidential Suite would have felt like a dream.
For Dominic Hale, it felt like proof.

Proof that he had finally escaped the ordinary life he once hated.
He stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows wearing a silk robe, holding a cup of coffee, and looking down at the city below.
“This is where I belong,” he whispered.
Behind him, Vanessa Blake stretched across the enormous bed.
Her blonde hair fell perfectly over the designer pillows.
She looked around the suite with satisfaction.
“I could get used to this.”
Dominic smiled.
“You should.”
Vanessa looked at him through the mirror.
“Are you saying this could become our normal?”
Dominic turned around.
“Why not?”
She smiled.
“Because yesterday, your wife was still in the picture.”
Dominic’s expression hardened.
“Not anymore.”
Vanessa sat up.
“You’re sure?”
He walked closer.
“Evelyn and I have been over for a long time.”
“That woman doesn’t understand my life.”
“She never wanted the things I wanted.”
Vanessa tilted her head.
“Really?”
Dominic nodded confidently.
“She was always comfortable staying small.”
“She liked gardening, quiet dinners, and pretending money didn’t matter.”
Vanessa laughed.
“And now?”
“Now I’m with someone who understands success.”
Dominic looked around the suite.
“This is the future.”
Neither of them noticed the security footage from the previous night had already been transferred.
Neither of them knew that every word was being saved.
At 8:00 a.m., Evelyn Whitmore sat inside the private executive lounge of the Sterling Crown.
Unlike the public lobby, this area was hidden from ordinary guests.
A quiet room.
Dark wood walls.
Rare artwork.
A view of the entire Las Vegas skyline.
This was where billion-dollar decisions were made.
Not by the people who appeared powerful.
But by the people who actually controlled the system.
Evelyn sat at the head of the conference table.
Around her were executives from Whitmore Holdings.
Richard Alder placed a folder in front of her.
“Final report.”
She opened it.
Inside were months of financial records.
Dominic had been careful.
But not careful enough.
Luxury dinners.
Private flights.
Hotel reservations.
Designer purchases.
All disguised as business expenses.
The total amount was staggering.
“He wasn’t just having an affair,” Richard said.
“He was preparing a new life.”
Evelyn quietly turned the pages.
“I know.”
One of the attorneys looked concerned.
“Mrs. Whitmore, there is something else.”
Evelyn looked up.
“What?”
The attorney placed another document on the table.
“Dominic has been contacting investors outside the company.”
Richard’s expression changed.
“He was trying to separate himself from Whitmore Holdings?”
The attorney nodded.
“Not exactly.”
“He was trying to create the impression that he was responsible for the company’s growth.”
Silence filled the room.
Evelyn slowly closed the folder.
“So he wanted the world to believe he built what I inherited.”
Richard corrected her.
“What you built.”
For the first time that morning, Evelyn looked away.
The betrayal hurt.
Not because of the money.
Not because of the company.
But because she remembered the man Dominic used to be.
The man who once held her hand and promised they would build something together.
The man who once told her:
“Your dreams are my dreams.”
Now those words felt like a performance.
At 9:15 a.m., Dominic and Vanessa finally left the Presidential Suite.
They walked through the lobby like celebrities.
Vanessa wore oversized sunglasses.
Dominic adjusted his suit jacket.
He expected attention.
He expected admiration.
He expected people to recognize his importance.
But something felt different.
The employees were polite.
Too polite.
The bellmen avoided eye contact.
The receptionist looked nervous.
Dominic frowned.
“What’s wrong with everyone?”
Vanessa looked around.
“Maybe they’re just jealous.”
Dominic smiled.
“That’s usually the case.”
They approached the front desk.
Carter was standing there.
Dominic placed the room key cards on the counter.
“Excellent service.”
Carter nodded.
“Thank you, Mr. Hale.”
Dominic noticed the young receptionist’s tone.
Cold.
Professional.
Different from yesterday.
“You seem nervous.”
Carter looked at him.
“No, sir.”
Dominic leaned closer.
“Do you know who I am?”
Carter paused.
“Yes.”
“I’m the Chief Operating Officer of Whitmore Holdings.”
Carter remained silent.
Dominic smiled arrogantly.
“People usually remember that.”
Carter looked toward the private elevator.
Then back at Dominic.
“Yes, sir.”
A strange feeling moved through Dominic.
Something was wrong.
But before he could ask, the elevator doors opened.
Evelyn stepped out.
The entire atmosphere changed.
No cardigan.
No sneakers.
No tired appearance.
She wore a perfectly tailored cream-colored suit.
Her dark hair was styled elegantly.
A simple diamond necklace rested around her neck.
She looked completely different.
Not because of the clothes.
Because of the confidence.
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
Dominic stared.
“Evelyn?”
She walked toward them calmly.
“Good morning, Dominic.”
He looked confused.
“What are you doing?”
She glanced around the lobby.
“The same thing I do every morning.”
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“You work here?”
Evelyn looked at her.
“No.”
A small pause.
“I own it.”
The smile vanished from Vanessa’s face.
Dominic blinked.
“What?”
Evelyn continued walking.
“Welcome to the Sterling Crown Hotel.”
“You enjoyed your stay?”
Dominic stared at her.
“This is a joke.”
“No.”
Her voice remained calm.
“It’s a fact.”
Vanessa looked around.
“You’re saying this hotel belongs to you?”
Evelyn nodded.
“One of many properties owned by Whitmore Holdings.”
Dominic’s face changed.
The confidence disappeared.
The memories returned.
All the times Evelyn had mentioned business meetings.
All the times she had traveled.
All the times he assumed she was just managing family investments.
“You never told me.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“You never asked.”
The words hit harder than he expected.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Dominic, you said—”
“I know what I said,” he interrupted.
For the first time, panic appeared in his eyes.
Evelyn looked at him.
“You spent last night insulting me in my own hotel.”
Dominic swallowed.
“Evelyn…”
“You allowed another woman to humiliate me.”
“I didn’t mean—”
“No.”
Her voice became colder.
“You meant exactly what you did.”
The lobby became silent.
Guests watched.
Employees listened.
The same place where he had embarrassed her was now the place where the truth was being revealed.
Evelyn reached into her pocket.
She pulled out the folded five-dollar bill.
The same one Vanessa had thrown at her.
She placed it gently on the marble counter.
“Do you remember this?”
Dominic looked at it.
His face turned pale.
“Yes.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Good.”
“Because I want you to remember this moment forever.”
She stepped closer.
“Not because you lost your job.”
“Not because you lost your reputation.”
“But because this was the moment you discovered the woman you underestimated was the person who had been carrying you the entire time.”
Dominic stood frozen.
Then Evelyn turned to Richard.
“Prepare the boardroom.”
Richard nodded.
“Yes, Madam Chair.”
Dominic heard the title.
Madam Chair.
And suddenly, the truth became impossible to ignore.
The woman he called ordinary.
The woman he mocked.
The woman he allowed another person to insult.
Was the person who controlled his entire future.
Evelyn walked away.
Leaving Dominic standing beside Vanessa.
For the first time in years…
He felt powerless.
And the worst part?
May you like
The woman who had every reason to destroy him…
Had not even started yet.
