CHAPTER 7 — VANESSA’S HIDDEN AGENDA

CHAPTER 7 — VANESSA’S HIDDEN AGENDA

The message from Vanessa remained on Dominic Hale’s phone for nearly an hour.

We need to talk.

Four simple words.

But they carried a weight he couldn’t ignore.

For months, Vanessa had been the person who made him feel powerful.

She admired him.

She praised him.

She told him he deserved more.

She told him Evelyn was holding him back.

Now, for the first time, Dominic wondered if he had been seeing only what he wanted to see.

He stared at the message.

Then he replied.

Where?

The answer came almost immediately.

The Sterling Crown. Private lounge. One hour.

Dominic almost laughed.

The same hotel.

The same place where everything began.

The same place where his life started falling apart.

An hour later, Dominic entered the private lounge.

Unlike before, he didn’t walk in confidently.

He kept his head down.

People who once greeted him now barely noticed him.

The powerful executives he used to impress avoided him.

The whispers followed him.

“That’s him.”

“The former Whitmore executive.”

“The man who was removed.”

Dominic pretended not to hear.

But every word hurt.

He found Vanessa sitting in the corner.

She looked different.

Not physically.

She was still dressed perfectly.

Still elegant.

Still polished.

But something had changed.

The confidence was gone.

She looked worried.

Dominic sat across from her.

“You wanted to talk.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Yes.”

“About what?”

She took a deep breath.

“About us.”

Dominic frowned.

“What about us?”

She looked away.

“I think we need to be realistic.”

A cold feeling moved through him.

“Realistic?”

“Yes.”

“Dominic, things have changed.”

He stared at her.

“You mean because I lost my position?”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Dominic leaned back.

“I thought you said money didn’t matter.”

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“I said success mattered.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You said you loved who I was.”

She remained silent.

Dominic laughed quietly.

“That’s interesting.”

“What?”

“Because the first time you met me, you didn’t know who I was.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying you liked the version of me you thought existed.”

The silence became uncomfortable.

Vanessa finally opened her handbag.

She removed a folder.

Dominic looked at it.

“What is that?”

She pushed it across the table.

“Something you need to see.”

He opened it.

Inside were documents.

Contracts.

Emails.

Financial records.

His eyes narrowed.

“Where did you get these?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Dominic…”

“Where?”

She lowered her voice.

“I had someone look into Whitmore Holdings.”

His expression changed.

“You investigated my company?”

“Not your company.”

She corrected herself.

“Evelyn’s company.”

The words bothered him.

“She was hiding things.”

Dominic looked through the documents.

At first, he expected to find something damaging.

Something that would prove Evelyn wasn’t as perfect as everyone believed.

But the documents showed something else.

Evelyn had secretly created employee assistance programs.

She had funded scholarships.

She had protected workers during difficult financial periods.

She had donated millions anonymously.

Dominic stared.

“She never told anyone.”

“No,” Vanessa said.

“That’s the point.”

Dominic looked confused.

“What point?”

Vanessa leaned forward.

“Evelyn built a reputation as a powerful businesswoman.”

“But privately, she controlled everything.”

Dominic looked at her.

“That’s not a crime.”

Vanessa became quiet.

Then she said:

“No.”

“But it made me realize something.”

“What?”

“She was never weak.”

Dominic slowly closed the folder.

For the first time, Vanessa admitted the truth.

The woman she mocked.

The woman she humiliated.

Was someone she never understood.

Dominic stood.

“I need to go.”

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“Wait.”

He looked back.

“What?”

“There’s more.”

He frowned.

“What more?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“I didn’t tell you everything.”

A long silence followed.

Dominic slowly sat back down.

“What did you do?”

Vanessa looked nervous.

“I contacted investors before you were removed.”

His expression changed.

“Why?”

“Because I thought…”

She stopped.

“You thought what?”

She looked away.

“I thought if you became the leader of Whitmore Holdings, I would have a place in that world.”

Dominic stared at her.

“So you were planning too.”

Vanessa said nothing.

The truth finally became clear.

They had both used each other.

Dominic wanted Vanessa because she represented the lifestyle he wanted.

Vanessa wanted Dominic because she believed he represented power.

Neither had truly loved the other.

They had loved what they thought they could gain.

Dominic stood slowly.

“You knew about the takeover plan.”

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.”

“And you never told me?”

“I thought it would work.”

The answer shocked him.

“You were willing to destroy everything.”

Her eyes hardened.

“Don’t act innocent, Dominic.”

“You were willing to destroy your marriage.”

“You were willing to destroy Evelyn.”

“You were willing to destroy your own company.”

“You don’t get to pretend you’re the victim now.”

For once, Dominic had no response.

Because she was right.

Meanwhile, Evelyn sat in her office reviewing the latest reports.

Richard entered.

“We have an update.”

She looked up.

“About Vanessa?”

Richard nodded.

“She was involved earlier than we thought.”

Evelyn listened carefully.

“She contacted several investors before Dominic made his move.”

“Why?”

Richard placed the report down.

“She believed Dominic would eventually control the company.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“She never wanted Dominic.”

Richard looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

“She wanted the position she believed Dominic would give her.”

A pause.

“She didn’t fall in love with my husband.”

“She fell in love with his ambition.”

That evening, Dominic returned to his apartment.

The place felt empty.

The luxury furniture.

The expensive decorations.

The lifestyle he had chased.

None of it mattered anymore.

His phone rang.

It was Evelyn.

He stared at the screen.

For a moment, he considered ignoring it.

But he answered.

“Hello.”

Her voice was calm.

“We need to talk.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

“About what?”

“About the final stage.”

He frowned.

“Final stage?”

“Yes.”

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn paused.

“It means this was never only about removing you from the company.”

Dominic felt uneasy.

“What else?”

Her voice became colder.

“It means I finally discovered how much damage you caused.”

Silence.

Then Evelyn said:

“And tomorrow, the world will learn the truth.”

The call ended.

Dominic stared at his phone.

For the first time, he felt real fear.

Because he understood something.

Losing power was painful.

May you like

But losing the truth he had hidden…

Could destroy everything.
