CHAPTER 8 — THE TRUTH BEHIND THE PERFECT MARRIAGE

CHAPTER 8 — THE TRUTH BEHIND THE PERFECT MARRIAGE

The next morning, the headlines appeared everywhere.

Not about celebrities.

Not about politics.

Not about another billionaire scandal.

This time, the business world was watching.

WHITMORE HOLDINGS ANNOUNCES INTERNAL REVIEW AFTER EXECUTIVE MISCONDUCT DISCOVERY

The article spread quickly.

Investors.

Business partners.

Industry leaders.

Everyone wanted answers.

But the public still didn’t know the full story.

They only knew one thing:

Dominic Hale, the former executive of Whitmore Holdings, was at the center of a major corporate investigation.

And Evelyn Whitmore was the woman leading it.

At the Whitmore Holdings headquarters, the atmosphere was intense.

Reporters gathered outside the building.

Employees whispered in the hallways.

Executives waited for official statements.

But inside the executive office, Evelyn remained calm.

She sat at her desk reviewing documents.

Richard entered.

“The media is asking questions.”

Evelyn looked up.

“What are they asking?”

“They want to know if you knew about Dominic’s actions before the investigation.”

She nodded.

“And?”

“I told them we will release a complete statement when the review is finished.”

Evelyn looked back at the documents.

“That is the right answer.”

Richard hesitated.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“The public believes this is only a corporate dispute.”

Evelyn was quiet.

“They don’t know the personal side.”

“No.”

Richard placed another folder on the desk.

“Do you want that information released?”

Evelyn stared at the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Messages.

Records.

Proof of Dominic and Vanessa’s affair.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she closed the folder.

“No.”

Richard looked surprised.

“Why not?”

“Because I don’t want the world to know because I’m hurt.”

She looked toward the window.

“I want them to know because people deserve the truth.”

Meanwhile, Dominic watched the news from his apartment.

Every channel showed the same story.

Whitmore Holdings.

The investigation.

The financial concerns.

His name.

He turned off the television.

The silence was unbearable.

For years, Dominic had dreamed of being recognized.

Now everyone knew his name.

But not for the reason he wanted.

His phone rang.

A former colleague.

He answered.

“Hello?”

“Dominic.”

The voice sounded uncomfortable.

“I just wanted to ask…”

“Ask what?”

“Did you really use company money for personal expenses?”

Dominic froze.

“I…”

The person continued.

“Because people are talking.”

Then the call ended.

Another call came.

Then another.

One by one, people who once admired him wanted answers.

But no one wanted to defend him.

At noon, Dominic went to the Sterling Crown.

He didn’t know why.

Maybe because some part of him still believed he belonged there.

Maybe because it was the place where everything started.

The lobby looked exactly the same.

The chandelier.

The marble floor.

The elegant staircase.

But he felt like a stranger.

Carter stood behind the reception desk.

When he saw Dominic, his expression became serious.

“Mr. Hale.”

Dominic nodded.

“I need to see Evelyn.”

“I’m sorry.”

Dominic frowned.

“Sorry?”

“She is in meetings all day.”

“I’m her husband.”

Carter looked at him calmly.

“You were.”

The words hit harder than expected.

Dominic stared at him.

Carter immediately lowered his eyes.

“Excuse me.”

But the damage was done.

For years, people had treated Dominic with respect because of his position.

Now that the position was gone…

So was the respect.

Later that afternoon, Evelyn finally agreed to meet him.

Not as a wife.

Not as a partner.

As the chairwoman of Whitmore Holdings.

Dominic entered her office.

She didn’t stand.

“Sit.”

He did.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Finally, Dominic said:

“You’re really going to destroy me.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“No.”

“I’m allowing the truth to exist.”

He laughed bitterly.

“Same thing.”

“No.”

Her voice was firm.

“Destroying someone is when you create a lie about them.”

“I am revealing what you created yourself.”

Dominic looked down.

“I made mistakes.”

Evelyn said nothing.

“I was afraid.”

Still nothing.

“I thought I was losing myself.”

She finally answered.

“You didn’t lose yourself, Dominic.”

“You chose yourself.”

The words were painful.

Dominic looked at her.

“Do you remember when we started?”

Evelyn’s expression changed slightly.

“Yes.”

“We had nothing.”

“Yes.”

“You believed in me.”

“I did.”

“Then why are you acting like I’m a stranger?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Because the man I believed in would never have done this.”

Dominic looked away.

That sentence hurt more than anger.

Because she wasn’t yelling.

She wasn’t insulting him.

She was simply telling the truth.

After a long silence, Dominic asked:

“Was there ever a chance?”

Evelyn knew what he meant.

A chance to save their marriage.

A chance to go back.

She looked at the man sitting across from her.

The man she once loved.

Then she answered honestly.

“Yes.”

Dominic looked up.

“When?”

“Before Vanessa.”

“Before the lies.”

“Before you decided I was your enemy.”

A tear almost appeared in his eyes.

“But now?”

Evelyn looked away.

“Now I don’t know who I would be forgiving.”

That evening, Evelyn received an unexpected message.

From Michael.

I found something about Dominic’s final plan.

She immediately called him.

He answered.

“Evelyn.”

“What did you find?”

Michael sounded nervous.

“Dominic wasn’t only trying to control Whitmore Holdings.”

“What else?”

“He was planning to sell information.”

Evelyn froze.

“To who?”

Michael hesitated.

“I don’t know yet.”

“Find out.”

“I will.”

After the call ended, Evelyn sat quietly.

Because she finally understood.

Dominic’s betrayal wasn’t just personal.

It wasn’t just financial.

He had been willing to risk everything.

The company.

The employees.

The family legacy.

For power.

That night, Dominic sat alone.

His phone showed dozens of unread messages.

But one message stood out.

An unknown number.

You think Evelyn won?

Dominic stared.

A second message appeared.

She doesn’t know the whole truth yet.

His heartbeat increased.

Then another message arrived.

The Whitmore empire has a secret.

Dominic looked at the screen.

For the first time in days…

He felt something he thought he had lost.

Hope.

Because if there was a secret…

Maybe he still had a way back.

But what Dominic didn’t know…

May you like

Was that the secret he was about to uncover would not save him.

It would expose him.
