CHAPTER 3 — THE BOARDROOM WHERE EVERYTHING CHANGED

CHAPTER 3 — THE BOARDROOM WHERE EVERYTHING CHANGED
The executive boardroom of the Sterling Crown had hosted some of the most important decisions in Whitmore Holdings history.
Multi-million-dollar acquisitions.
International partnerships.
Corporate negotiations that changed entire industries.
But that morning, the atmosphere was different.
There was no celebration.

No champagne.
No applause.
Only silence.
Dominic Hale sat at the long black marble table, staring at the documents placed in front of him.
For the first time in years, he looked uncertain.
Across from him sat Evelyn Whitmore.
Not the woman he had mocked in the lobby.
Not the wife he believed was ordinary.
This was Evelyn Whitmore, the woman who controlled an empire.
Richard Alder sat beside her with the legal team.
The same people Dominic had spent years trying to impress.
Now they were watching him.
Judging him.
Waiting.
Dominic adjusted his suit.
“So this is what this is about?”
Evelyn looked up.
“What do you mean?”
“A public humiliation.”
A faint expression crossed her face.
“You believe this is about revenge?”
“Isn’t it?”
Dominic leaned forward.
“You brought me into this room to make me feel small.”
Evelyn remained calm.
“No, Dominic.”
“I brought you into this room because you forgot the difference between feeling powerful and actually having power.”
The words hit him.
Richard opened the first folder.
“Mr. Hale, we have completed the internal investigation.”
Dominic looked at him.
“Investigation?”
“Yes.”
“Regarding unauthorized company spending, misuse of corporate accounts, and attempts to misrepresent company achievements.”
Dominic’s expression changed.
“You’re accusing me?”
The attorney beside Richard opened another file.
“We are presenting documented evidence.”
Photos.
Receipts.
Transaction records.
Flight information.
Hotel expenses.
Everything.
Dominic stared at the pages.
“This is ridiculous.”
Richard spoke calmly.
“No, Mr. Hale.”
“This is accurate.”
Dominic looked at Evelyn.
“You were watching me?”
Evelyn’s eyes remained steady.
“I was paying attention.”
“You always thought I was too busy gardening to understand business.”
A pause.
“But you forgot something.”
“What?”
“I built the garden.”
Dominic frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Evelyn looked around the boardroom.
“This hotel.”
“This company.”
“These employees.”
“Every opportunity you benefited from.”
“I created the foundation.”
Her voice remained controlled.
“You stepped onto a road that was already built and convinced yourself you paved it.”
Silence filled the room.
Dominic leaned back.
His confidence slowly returned.
“You’re not going to fire me.”
Everyone looked at him.
Evelyn tilted her head slightly.
“And why is that?”
“Because you need me.”
A small smile appeared on Dominic’s face.
“You know the operations.”
“You know my relationships.”
“I’ve represented this company for years.”
Richard almost laughed.
But stopped himself.
Dominic continued.
“You can’t just remove me overnight.”
Evelyn looked at Richard.
“Open the second file.”
Richard did.
Dominic’s expression changed.
Inside were letters.
Signed agreements.
Board approvals.
Contingency plans.
“You prepared for this?”
Evelyn nodded.
“Six months ago.”
Dominic stared.
“Six months?”
“Yes.”
“Before you even knew about Vanessa?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“I knew.”
The room became silent.
Dominic froze.
“What?”
“I knew about the affair before you did.”
His face changed.
“What are you talking about?”
Evelyn folded her hands.
“You weren’t as careful as you believed.”
Dominic looked away.
For the first time, he seemed embarrassed.
“You hired someone to follow me?”
“No.”
“Then how?”
Evelyn answered simply.
“Your behavior changed.”
“You stopped asking about my day.”
“You stopped caring about our conversations.”
“You started hiding your phone.”
“You started spending money you didn’t have.”
She paused.
“People reveal themselves long before they confess.”
Dominic lowered his eyes.
Meanwhile, outside the boardroom, Vanessa paced angrily.
She had refused to enter.
She believed this was still a misunderstanding.
A temporary problem.
A disagreement between a husband and wife.
But the longer she waited, the more nervous she became.
She called Dominic.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Finally, she sent a message.
What is happening? You said she was nobody.
A few seconds later, Dominic read it.
But he didn’t respond.
Because for the first time, he didn’t know what to say.
Inside the boardroom, Evelyn pushed a document across the table.
“This is your resignation agreement.”
Dominic stared at it.
“You want me to resign?”
“I want you to accept responsibility.”
He laughed bitterly.
“So that’s it?”
“No.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“That is only the beginning.”
Dominic’s face hardened.
“What else?”
“You will cooperate with the compliance investigation.”
“And if I refuse?”
Richard answered.
“Then the company will proceed with legal action.”
Dominic looked at Evelyn.
“You would do that to your own husband?”
The room became quiet.
Evelyn’s expression softened for just a moment.
“My husband disappeared a long time ago.”
Then her expression became firm again.
“The man sitting here is someone who betrayed me and endangered thousands of employees.”
Dominic looked down.
For the first time, he saw the consequences.
Not just losing money.
Not just losing status.
Losing respect.
After two hours, the meeting ended.
Dominic walked out of the boardroom.
The same hallway where executives once greeted him with respect.
Now people stepped aside silently.
He felt every glance.
Every whisper.
Every judgment.
Near the elevator, Vanessa immediately approached him.
“Dominic!”
She grabbed his arm.
“What happened?”
He said nothing.
“Tell me.”
Still nothing.
Her confidence started fading.
“Dominic, you said she was just a housewife.”
He looked at her.
“She owns everything.”
Vanessa froze.
“What?”
“The hotel.”
“The company.”
“Everything.”
Her face turned pale.
“No.”
Dominic looked exhausted.
“Yes.”
Vanessa stepped back.
“But you told me…”
“I was wrong.”
The answer shocked her.
Dominic Hale had never admitted he was wrong.
Not once.
That evening, Evelyn returned home alone.
The house was quiet.
The same house where she and Dominic had built twenty years of memories.
She walked through the living room.
Photos lined the walls.
Their first vacation.
Their anniversary.
The early years before success changed everything.
She stopped at one picture.
A younger Dominic stood beside her.
Smiling.
Holding her hand.
She remembered when he was different.
Before money.
Before ego.
Before Vanessa.
Her phone rang.
It was Richard.
“Madam Chair.”
“Yes?”
“There is one more thing you need to know.”
Evelyn looked outside.
“What is it?”
Richard paused.
“We found evidence that Dominic wasn’t only hiding the affair.”
“He was planning something much bigger.”
Evelyn’s expression changed.
“What kind of something?”
Richard lowered his voice.
“He was preparing to take control of Whitmore Holdings.”
The room went silent.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Because now she understood.
This was never just about betrayal.
It was about a takeover.
Dominic hadn’t simply fallen in love with another woman.
He had fallen in love with power.
