CHAPTER 5 — THE BROTHER WHO CHOSE THE WRONG SIDE

CHAPTER 5 — THE BROTHER WHO CHOSE THE WRONG SIDE
The Whitmore family name had always represented loyalty.
At least, that was what Evelyn believed.
For generations, the Whitmores had built their reputation on trust, discipline, and protecting their legacy.
They believed family came before everything.
Money.
Power.
Status.
But Evelyn was beginning to understand a painful truth:

Sometimes the people closest to you are the ones who know exactly where to hurt you.
She sat in her office late that night, staring at the documents Richard had sent.
The investor list.
The private communications.
The hidden meetings.
And one name that refused to leave her mind.
Michael Whitmore.
Her younger brother.
The person she trusted more than almost anyone.
She remembered him as a child.
Always following her around.
Always asking questions.
Always telling everyone that his older sister was the smartest person he knew.
When their father passed away, Michael had been the one who stood beside her.
He told her:
“You’re the only person who can protect what Dad built.”
She believed him.
Maybe that was the biggest mistake.
The next morning, Evelyn arrived at Whitmore Holdings earlier than usual.
The building was already alive.
Executives walked quickly through the lobby.
Employees greeted each other.
Phones rang.
Meetings began.
This was the world she had built.
A world Dominic had tried to steal.
But now there was another threat.
Her own family.
Richard met her outside the executive office.
“We tracked Michael’s communications.”
Evelyn nodded.
“What did you find?”
Richard handed her a tablet.
“Private meetings with Dominic.”
She scrolled through the records.
Dates.
Locations.
Messages.
Her expression remained calm.
But inside, something broke.
“How long?”
“At least eight months.”
Evelyn looked up.
“Eight months?”
“Yes.”
“Before Vanessa?”
Richard nodded.
“That’s what concerns us.”
She placed the tablet down.
“So the affair was not the beginning.”
“No.”
Richard’s voice lowered.
“It was part of something bigger.”
Across town, Michael Whitmore sat inside an expensive restaurant overlooking the city.
He looked relaxed.
Confident.
A man who believed he had already won.
Dominic sat across from him.
“You said everything would be handled.”
Michael took a sip of his coffee.
“It will be.”
Dominic looked frustrated.
“My access is gone.”
“My reputation is damaged.”
“Evelyn knows.”
Michael smiled.
“She knows about you.”
A pause.
“But she doesn’t know about us.”
Dominic leaned forward.
“What does that mean?”
Michael placed his cup down.
“It means Evelyn still believes family matters.”
“She still thinks there are limits.”
Dominic frowned.
“You’re sure?”
Michael smiled.
“I know my sister.”
“She always wants to believe people have good intentions.”
“And that weakness will destroy her.”
Dominic looked uncertain.
“You really think you can take control of Whitmore Holdings?”
Michael leaned back.
“With the right investors.”
“With the right board members.”
“And with your public support.”
He smiled.
“She’ll have no choice.”
At noon, Evelyn received an unexpected visitor.
Michael.
Her office assistant announced him.
“Your brother is here.”
Evelyn looked up.
For a moment, she felt relieved.
Maybe there was an explanation.
Maybe Richard had misunderstood.
Maybe her brother had been investigating Dominic.
Maybe there was still someone on her side.
“Send him in.”
The door opened.
Michael entered with a confident smile.
“Evelyn.”
She stood.
“Michael.”
They looked at each other.
The silence between them felt heavier than any argument.
He noticed the documents on the table.
“So…”
“You found out.”
Evelyn’s expression changed slightly.
“You’re not going to deny it?”
Michael sighed.
“Would it matter?”
The answer hurt more than she expected.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You worked with Dominic.”
“Yes.”
The honesty shocked her.
“Why?”
Michael walked toward the window.
“Because someone needed to make changes.”
Evelyn stared.
“Changes?”
“Yes.”
“You became too powerful.”
A quiet silence followed.
Evelyn almost couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“You think I became the problem?”
Michael turned around.
“I think you forgot this company belonged to the family.”
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.
“No.”
“You forgot.”
She pointed toward the building outside.
“This company survived because people worked for it.”
“Employees.”
“Partners.”
“Families.”
“Not because someone shared my last name.”
Michael’s face hardened.
“You always thought you were better.”
Evelyn looked surprised.
“Better?”
“Yes.”
“You were always the successful one.”
“The favorite.”
“The one Dad trusted.”
She finally understood.
This was not about business.
It was about jealousy.
Years of resentment.
Years of feeling second place.
Michael continued.
“I spent my entire life standing behind you.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
“You stood beside me.”
Michael laughed.
“That’s what you tell yourself.”
The conversation became colder.
“You helped Dominic betray me.”
Michael remained silent.
“You helped him build a plan against me.”
Still silent.
“And you expected me to simply step aside.”
Michael looked at her.
“You should retire.”
The words shocked her.
“Excuse me?”
“You’ve done enough.”
“You built the company.”
“But now someone younger should lead.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“Dominic promised you a position.”
Michael looked away.
That was enough.
She had her answer.
“What did he offer you?”
Michael said nothing.
Evelyn nodded.
“I see.”
“You weren’t trying to save the company.”
“You were trying to buy a piece of it.”
That evening, Evelyn called a private meeting.
The executive team gathered.
Richard placed new information on the screen.
“Michael Whitmore and Dominic Hale created a plan to challenge company leadership.”
The executives watched silently.
One asked:
“What is your response, Madam Chair?”
Evelyn looked at the documents.
Then at the city outside.
For years, she had protected her family.
Even when it hurt her.
Even when they disappointed her.
But now she understood something.
Protecting someone who is trying to destroy you is not loyalty.
It is surrender.
She stood.
“Tomorrow morning, we announce a full internal review.”
Richard nodded.
“And Michael?”
Evelyn paused.
“Give him one chance.”
Everyone looked surprised.
“One chance?”
“Yes.”
Richard frowned.
“Why?”
Evelyn looked down at the five-dollar bill on her desk.
“Because I want him to understand something before everything changes.”
“What?”
She placed the bill inside a secure folder.
“That he lost his family before he lost his power.”
That night, Michael received a message from Evelyn.
Meet me tomorrow. Alone.
He smiled.
He thought she was finally ready to negotiate.
He thought she was afraid.
He thought he had won.
But he didn’t understand his sister.
Evelyn Whitmore was not preparing to surrender.
She was preparing to reveal the truth.

And when the truth came out…
Everyone who betrayed her would have to face the consequences.
