CHAPTER 4 — THE SECRET PLAN BEHIND THE BETRAYAL

CHAPTER 4 — THE SECRET PLAN BEHIND THE BETRAYAL
The Whitmore estate had always been a place of peace.
A private property surrounded by tall trees, beautiful gardens, and quiet walking paths.
For years, Evelyn had considered it her sanctuary.
A place where she could escape the pressure of running a global company.
A place where she believed she could trust the person beside her.
But tonight, the silence felt different.

Heavy.
Almost like the house itself knew something had changed.
Evelyn sat alone in her private office.
The room was filled with memories.
Books she had collected over decades.
Awards from charities she supported.
Photos of company milestones.
And on the corner of her desk sat an old picture of her and Dominic.
A younger version of themselves.
Before the money.
Before the fame.
Before the betrayal.
She stared at the photo for a long time.
Then her phone rang.
Richard.
She answered.
“Tell me everything.”
There was a short pause.
“We recovered files from Dominic’s company laptop.”
Evelyn leaned back.
“And?”
“He wasn’t only hiding expenses.”
Richard’s voice became more serious.
“He was building a case against you.”
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“A case?”
“Yes.”
“He collected internal documents, financial reports, and private company information.”
“For what purpose?”
Richard hesitated.
“To convince investors that you were no longer capable of leading Whitmore Holdings.”
The room became silent.
Evelyn looked toward the window.
Outside, the garden lights illuminated the paths she had planted herself years ago.
“So he wanted my position.”
“Yes.”
“He planned to make the board question my leadership.”
“Yes.”
Richard continued.
“He was preparing to present himself as the person who could ‘modernize’ the company.”
Evelyn almost smiled.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was predictable.
“He wanted to save the company from the woman who created it.”
Richard sighed.
“Apparently.”
Six months earlier…
Dominic Hale had started changing.
At first, it was small.
Late meetings.
Secret phone calls.
Sudden business trips.
A new interest in networking with wealthy investors.
Evelyn noticed everything.
But she never confronted him.
Because she wanted to believe there was still something worth saving.
She remembered the man she married.
The man who worked two jobs before they became successful.
The man who once told her:
“Evelyn, I don’t care if we have a mansion or a small apartment. As long as I’m building it with you.”
But somewhere along the way, Dominic stopped wanting to build.
He wanted to own.
And when he realized he could never surpass Evelyn’s achievements…
He decided to take them.
The next morning, Dominic woke up to a completely different reality.
His access badge no longer worked.
His company email had been suspended.
His assistant refused to transfer his calls.
And every person who once rushed to please him suddenly became unavailable.
He stood outside the Whitmore Holdings headquarters, staring at the massive glass building.
For years, he had walked through those doors believing he belonged there.
Now he needed permission.
He entered the lobby.
The receptionist looked surprised.
“Mr. Hale.”
“I need to see Evelyn.”
The receptionist checked her computer.
“I’m sorry, sir.”
“Your access has been restricted.”
Dominic frowned.
“Restricted?”
“Yes.”
“By whose authority?”
The receptionist looked uncomfortable.
“Madam Chair.”
Those two words angered him.
Madam Chair.
That was how everyone referred to Evelyn now.
Not wife.
Not partner.
Not someone standing behind him.
A leader.
Dominic lowered his voice.
“Tell her I need to speak with her.”
“I’m afraid she already knows you’re here.”
Before Dominic could respond, the elevator doors opened.
Evelyn stepped out.
She wore a dark navy suit.
Professional.
Elegant.
Completely composed.
The employees around her immediately greeted her.
“Good morning, Madam Chair.”
Dominic watched.
The respect.
The admiration.
The authority.
Everything he wanted.
Everything he thought he deserved.
“You really enjoy this, don’t you?”
Evelyn stopped.
“Enjoy what?”
“Making me look like the villain.”
She looked at him calmly.
“I didn’t make you anything.”
“You showed everyone who you were.”
Dominic clenched his jaw.
“You’re my wife.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“That stopped meaning something when you decided I was an obstacle instead of a partner.”
He lowered his voice.
“You’re destroying everything we built.”
“No, Dominic.”
She stepped closer.
“You were destroying it.”
Inside a private meeting room, Dominic tried a different approach.
He became emotional.
“I made mistakes.”
Evelyn remained silent.
“I was under pressure.”
Still silent.
“I lost myself.”
She looked at him.
“Did you lose yourself?”
“Or did you finally become who you always wanted to be?”
The question stopped him.
He looked away.
“I never wanted to hurt you.”
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“But you did.”
“I never wanted to embarrass you.”
“But you did.”
“I never wanted to lose you.”
Her eyes became colder.
“But you did.”
The silence was painful.
Then Dominic said the one thing he believed could change everything.
“You still love me.”
Evelyn looked at him.
For a moment, he saw hesitation.
Hope.
Then she answered.
“I loved the man you were.”
A pause.
“But I don’t recognize the man standing in front of me.”
That afternoon, Vanessa arrived at Dominic’s apartment.
She was furious.
“You need to fix this.”
Dominic looked exhausted.
“Fix what?”
“Everything.”
She walked around the room.
“I left a comfortable life because I believed you were becoming powerful.”
Dominic stared at her.
“You left?”
Vanessa stopped.
She realized what she said.
“I mean…”
“No.”
He laughed quietly.
“You already left.”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Dominic, be realistic.”
“Your wife controls everything.”
“She can’t just take your career away.”
Dominic looked at her.
“She already did.”
For the first time, Vanessa looked afraid.
“So what happens now?”
Dominic didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
That evening, Evelyn received another message from Richard.
We found the investor list.
She opened the attachment.
Names appeared on the screen.
Several powerful business figures.
People Dominic had secretly approached.
But one name made her freeze.
A name she never expected.
Her younger brother.
Michael Whitmore.
Evelyn stared at the screen.
Impossible.
Michael had always supported her.
He had always defended the family legacy.
She immediately called Richard.
“Find out everything about Michael’s involvement.”
Richard paused.
“Evelyn…”
“Yes?”
“I think Dominic wasn’t working alone.”
The words hung in the air.
For years, Evelyn had believed the betrayal came from one person.
Her husband.
But now she realized something much worse.
The people closest to her might have been planning against her from the beginning.
She looked at the five-dollar bill still sitting on her desk.
The symbol of humiliation.
The moment Dominic and Vanessa thought they had won.
Evelyn folded it carefully.
Because she understood something now.
This was no longer just a fight between a husband and wife.
May you like
This was a battle for everything she had built.
And someone else had just stepped onto the battlefield.
