CHAPTER 6 — THE LAST CHANCE

CHAPTER 6 — THE LAST CHANCE

The next morning, the rain fell over Las Vegas.

For a city known for bright lights and endless celebrations, the gray sky felt strangely appropriate.

Something was changing.

Something was ending.

And everyone involved could feel it.

Michael Whitmore arrived at the Sterling Crown Hotel at exactly 9:00 a.m.

He walked through the lobby with confidence.

The same lobby where Vanessa had laughed at Evelyn.

The same place where Dominic believed he had proven his importance.

But now Michael noticed something different.

Everyone knew.

The employees.

The executives.

The security team.

They all looked at him differently.

Not with respect.

With disappointment.

Michael ignored it.

He adjusted his expensive jacket and continued toward the private elevator.

He still believed he had control.

He believed Evelyn was emotional.

He believed family would always protect family.

That was his mistake.

Inside the executive conference room, Evelyn waited.

She stood near the window, watching the rain slide down the glass.

She didn’t turn when Michael entered.

“You’re early.”

Michael smiled.

“You always taught me punctuality mattered.”

A quiet pause.

Evelyn finally turned around.

“I also taught you honesty mattered.”

The smile disappeared from his face.

“Is this what this meeting is about?”

“Yes.”

She pointed to the chair across from her.

“Sit.”

Michael sat.

For a moment, neither spoke.

The silence between them carried years of memories.

Childhood.

Family dinners.

Their father’s advice.

The promises they made.

Then Evelyn placed a folder on the table.

Michael looked at it.

“What is this?”

“Your opportunity.”

He frowned.

“My opportunity?”

“Yes.”

“To tell me the truth.”

Michael leaned back.

“I already did.”

“No.”

Evelyn opened the folder.

“You admitted you worked with Dominic.”

She placed documents in front of him.

“But you didn’t tell me why.”

Michael looked at the papers.

His expression changed slightly.

Inside were financial records.

Private messages.

Meeting schedules.

And evidence of payments.

Evelyn watched him carefully.

“How much did Dominic promise you?”

Michael remained silent.

“That’s what I thought.”

Michael finally looked up.

“You think I did this for money?”

“Didn’t you?”

“No.”

His voice became emotional.

“I did this because you changed.”

Evelyn stared.

“Changed?”

“Yes.”

“You became someone who only cared about winning.”

A painful silence followed.

Michael continued.

“Dad built this company for the family.”

“And you turned it into your personal kingdom.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“That is what Dominic told you?”

Michael looked away.

“He was right about some things.”

Evelyn almost smiled.

“Dominic has spent months convincing people he is a victim.”

“He convinced you.”

“He convinced Vanessa.”

“He even convinced himself.”

Michael’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand.”

“No.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“I understand perfectly.”

“You wanted recognition.”

“You wanted people to say your name.”

“You wanted to stop being known as Evelyn Whitmore’s younger brother.”

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

Michael stood.

“You always had everything.”

Evelyn looked surprised.

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

“The respect.”

“The leadership.”

“Dad’s trust.”

“You never understood what it felt like to always be compared to someone else.”

Evelyn’s expression softened.

For a moment, she saw the younger brother she remembered.

The boy who felt invisible.

But then she remembered what he had done.

“Michael…”

Her voice became quieter.

“If you felt forgotten, you could have told me.”

“I was your sister.”

He looked away.

“You would have tried to fix it.”

“Yes.”

“Exactly.”

The answer surprised her.

Michael continued.

“I didn’t want your help.”

“I wanted my own victory.”

Evelyn returned to her seat.

“Then answer one question.”

Michael looked at her.

“What?”

“Did you ever care about what happened to me?”

The question was simple.

But it was the hardest one.

Michael didn’t answer.

And that silence told her everything.

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“I was afraid of this.”

Michael looked confused.

“Afraid of what?”

“That you didn’t betray me because you hated me.”

“You betrayed me because you forgot who you were.”

The door opened.

Richard entered.

“Evelyn.”

She looked at him.

“Is it time?”

Richard nodded.

Michael frowned.

“Time for what?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“The board meeting.”

Michael’s face changed.

“You called a board meeting?”

“Yes.”

“You’re going public?”

“Not yet.”

She stood.

“Because I wanted to give you one final chance.”

Michael laughed.

“You think I’m going to apologize?”

“No.”

“I think you’re going to make a choice.”

“What choice?”

Evelyn walked toward the door.

“You can stand beside the people who used your anger…”

She paused.

“Or you can stand beside the family you betrayed.”

Michael stared at her.

“And if I choose neither?”

Evelyn looked back.

“Then you will finally get what you wanted.”

“What?”

“Freedom from the Whitmore name.”

Two hours later, the board meeting began.

Executives filled the room.

Investors joined through secure video connections.

The atmosphere was tense.

Dominic arrived late.

He looked different.

The confidence was gone.

His expensive suit couldn’t hide the stress on his face.

Vanessa had stopped calling him.

Investors had stopped answering.

His world was collapsing.

But he still believed Michael was his solution.

He walked into the room.

“Evelyn.”

She looked at him.

“Dominic.”

Michael entered behind him.

Dominic smiled.

Finally.

His partner had arrived.

“Good.”

“We can begin.”

But then Michael did something unexpected.

He didn’t sit beside Dominic.

He walked past him.

And sat across from him.

Dominic’s smile faded.

“What are you doing?”

Michael looked at him.

“Choosing.”

The room became silent.

Dominic laughed nervously.

“What does that mean?”

Michael looked at Evelyn.

“I made a mistake.”

Everyone froze.

Dominic stared.

“Michael.”

But Michael continued.

“I thought taking control would prove I mattered.”

“I thought power would finally make people respect me.”

He looked at his sister.

“But I forgot the person who believed in me before anyone else.”

Evelyn said nothing.

Michael turned toward Dominic.

“You used me.”

Dominic’s face hardened.

“That’s not true.”

“It is.”

“You needed my family name.”

“You needed access.”

“You needed someone who could make your betrayal look legitimate.”

Dominic stood.

“This is ridiculous.”

Richard immediately responded.

“Sit down, Mr. Hale.”

For the first time, Dominic obeyed.

The meeting continued for hours.

Evidence was presented.

Records were reviewed.

Every hidden action was exposed.

By the end of the meeting, the board reached a decision.

Dominic Hale was officially removed from all company positions.

Michael was placed under investigation.

But Evelyn requested one thing.

No immediate legal action against her brother.

The board was surprised.

“Why?”

Evelyn answered simply:

“Because mistakes made from weakness can sometimes be corrected.”

“But betrayal made from greed cannot.”

That evening, Michael stood alone in the hotel lobby.

The same lobby where everything started.

Evelyn approached him.

Neither spoke for a moment.

Finally, Michael said:

“I’m sorry.”

She looked at him.

“I know.”

“Do you forgive me?”

Evelyn looked at the chandelier above them.

“I don’t know.”

The honesty hurt.

“But I hope one day you become someone I can trust again.”

Michael nodded.

Then he walked away.

Upstairs, Dominic watched the city lights through his apartment window.

His phone showed dozens of missed calls.

Investors.

Lawyers.

Former colleagues.

Everyone wanted answers.

But there was one message that caught his attention.

From Vanessa.

We need to talk.

Dominic stared at it.

Because suddenly he realized something terrifying.

He had lost his company.

He had lost his reputation.

And now…

He might lose the person he destroyed everything for.

The battle was not over.

Because Vanessa Blake had secrets of her own.

And those secrets were about to change everything.
