CHAPTER 8 — THE THIRD PLAYER

CHAPTER 8 — THE THIRD PLAYER
The man carrying the folder walked slowly toward us.
Not cautiously.
Not aggressively.
Just confidently.
The kind of confidence that came from knowing nobody in the area would dare stop him.
The agents around me immediately changed positions.
Claire noticed.
Michael noticed.
Even Victor noticed.
That was what bothered me most.
Victor Kane was a man who always knew more than everyone else.

But this time...
He looked interested.
Not surprised.
Interested.
And that meant he knew exactly who was coming.
The man stopped at the gate.
He was in his early sixties.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
No visible weapon.
But his presence changed the atmosphere instantly.
He looked at Claire.
Then at Victor.
Then finally at me.
"Arthur Hale."
I didn't answer.
He opened the folder.
"Or should I say..."
A pause.
"The man formerly known as Gabriel Cross?"
The world became completely still.
Only a few people knew that name.
Very few.
And none of them should have been standing in my driveway.
Claire looked at me.
"Arthur?"
I ignored the question.
I focused on the stranger.
"Who are you?"
The man closed the folder.
"My name is Daniel Mercer."
Michael immediately stepped back.
His face changed.
"Impossible."
Daniel looked at him.
"Hello, Michael."
Michael's voice lowered.
"You died."
Daniel smiled slightly.
"That seems to happen a lot in my line of work."
Victor stepped forward.
"Interesting."
Daniel looked at him.
"Victor."
A cold smile appeared.
"You still haven't learned when to leave."
Victor laughed.
"And you still pretend you have authority."
The tension between them was different.
Not like enemies.
Like two people who had been waiting years for another meeting.
I looked at Claire.
"Who is he?"
She shook her head.
"I don't know."
That was unusual.
Claire knew everything.
Or at least she usually did.
Daniel noticed.
"Ms. Morgan, I assume?"
Claire became defensive.
"How do you know my name?"
Daniel lifted the folder.
"Because I've been watching this situation longer than you have."
Nobody liked that answer.
Especially me.
I stepped forward.
"Start explaining."
Daniel looked at me.
"Fair enough."
He opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
Reports.
The same kind of information Victor and Richard had collected.
Except this folder looked official.
"This investigation started twelve years ago."
I frowned.
"Twelve?"
Daniel nodded.
"Long before Richard Whitmore married your daughter."
Lily stood behind me.
Listening.
Every word.
I hated that.
But I couldn't stop it.
"What investigation?" I asked.
Daniel looked directly at me.
"The investigation into the disappearance of the Black Ledger."
Victor smiled.
"Still chasing ghosts."
Daniel ignored him.
"You believe you destroyed the ledger."
I didn't answer.
"You're wrong."
My eyes narrowed.
"What are you talking about?"
Daniel removed a document.
"Before you disappeared, you created three copies."
My heart sank.
I said nothing.
Because he was right.
Almost.
"One copy was hidden."
Daniel looked at Lily.
"One copy was entrusted to her mother."
Lily's expression changed.
"And the third?"
Daniel looked back at me.
"The third copy was taken."
The air changed.
"Taken by who?"
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
That worried me.
Finally:
"Someone you trusted."
My mind moved through every possibility.
Every person.
Every connection.
Then one name appeared.
Someone I had avoided thinking about.
Someone who had disappeared after my escape.
"Victoria."
Daniel looked at her.
Victoria remained silent.
That silence said more than words.
Lily looked at her.
"You knew?"
Victoria looked away.
"Lily..."
"No."
My daughter's voice shook.
"Everyone knows something except me."
That sentence hit everyone.
Even Victor stopped smiling.
Because for the first time, he saw the damage his game had caused.
Not to me.
To her.
I moved closer to Lily.
"You're right."
She looked at me.
I swallowed.
"You deserved the truth."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I deserved it years ago."
I had no argument.
Because she was right.
Daniel continued.
"This is why Richard was selected."
I turned toward him.
"Explain."
"Victor needed someone close to your daughter."
Victor interrupted.
"I needed access."
Daniel looked at him.
"Exactly."
My anger returned.
"So Richard was never about marriage."
"No."
Daniel shook his head.
"He was an operation."
Lily looked sick.
"He married me because of my father?"
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
The pain on her face was worse than any bruise.
I wanted to tell her she was more than that.
That she mattered.
But the truth was already hurting her.
Richard Whitmore suddenly appeared at the mansion entrance.
Two agents were escorting him.
His expensive suit was wrinkled.
His confidence was gone.
But his eyes were full of rage.
"You people have no idea what you're doing."
Nobody responded.
Richard looked at me.
"This is your fault."
I stared at him.
"My fault?"
"Yes."
He pointed at Lily.
"Everything was fine until you came back."
The anger in my chest rose.
But Lily spoke first.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
Richard froze.
She slowly stepped forward.
Her voice was weak.
But steady.
"Everything was never fine."
Richard's face changed.
"Lily..."
"No."
She shook her head.
"You made me believe I was the problem."
A tear ran down her cheek.
"You made me afraid to tell anyone."
Richard looked around.
Searching for support.
Nobody moved.
Not even his mother.
For the first time...
He was alone.
Then something unexpected happened.
Eleanor Whitmore walked forward.
Everyone turned.
She looked at Richard.
Not me.
Not Lily.
Her own son.
"You idiot."
Richard stared.
"What?"
She shook her head.
"I told you not to lose control."
Silence.
My eyes narrowed.
"You knew?"
Eleanor looked at me.
Her expression hardened.
"I knew enough."
Lily stared at her.
"You knew he hurt me?"
Eleanor didn't answer.
That was the answer.
Lily stepped back.
Her face changed.
Not sadness.
Disgust.
Claire immediately moved toward Eleanor.
"You are now part of this investigation."
Eleanor laughed bitterly.
"You think this ends with me?"
Nobody spoke.
She looked toward Victor.
Then at Daniel.
Then finally at me.
"You still don't understand."
I stared at her.
"Understand what?"
Her voice became quiet.
"Richard wasn't the only person inside your family."
My stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
Eleanor smiled.
A terrible smile.
"The person who gave Victor information..."
A pause.
"Was someone you trusted more than anyone."
I looked at Lily.
Then Victoria.
Then Michael.
Everyone was silent.
Because everyone had secrets.
Suddenly, Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then his expression changed.
"What?"
Everyone watched him.
He ended the call.
Then looked at me.
"Arthur."
"What happened?"
His voice became serious.
"The second copy of the ledger has been found."
My heart stopped.
"Where?"
Daniel looked toward the house.
"Inside Richard Whitmore's estate."
I frowned.
"That's impossible."
"No."
Daniel shook his head.
"It's very possible."
A pause.
"Because someone wanted you to find it."
We entered the mansion again.
This time, nobody was pretending.
No Easter music.
No laughter.
No fake smiles.
Just evidence.
Just truth.
The hidden room was opened.
Inside was a small metal container.
Old.
Damaged.
Waiting.
Daniel placed gloves on.
Then opened it.
Inside was a single object.
A small memory drive.
And a handwritten note.
I picked up the note.
Only four words were written.
"For Arthur's daughter."
My hands went cold.
I looked at Lily.
She looked back at me.
"What does it mean?"
I didn't know.
But deep down...
I already feared the answer.
Because whoever left that message wasn't trying to destroy me.
They were trying to tell Lily something.
Something about herself.
Something her mother never told her.
Daniel looked at the drive.
"Whatever is inside this..."
He paused.
"Will change everything."
I stared at the tiny device.
Fifteen years of secrets.
Fifteen years of lies.
All sitting in the palm of my hand.
May you like
And for the first time...
I was afraid of the truth.
