CHAPTER 14 — THE SISTER IN THE SHADOWS

CHAPTER 14 — THE SISTER IN THE SHADOWS

The abandoned church stood alone at the edge of town.

No lights.

No people.

No signs of life.

Just an old stone building surrounded by dead trees and silence.

The kind of place where secrets felt at home.

As our vehicles stopped in front of the church, nobody moved.

Because everyone knew this wasn't a normal meeting.

This was a confrontation with the person who had been pulling strings from the beginning.

Sarah Hale.

Emma's sister.

The woman who was supposed to be dead.

The woman who knew why Lily had been targeted.

I looked at Emma before opening the car door.

"You need to tell me everything."

She looked down.

"I know."

"Not later."

She nodded.

"Now."

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

"Sarah and I were not always enemies."

That surprised me.

"Explain."

Emma looked toward the church.

"When we were younger, Sarah was the person I trusted most."

A pause.

"She was my best friend before she became my greatest mistake."

We walked toward the entrance.

The old wooden doors were already open.

Waiting.

That bothered me.

Because it meant Sarah wanted us inside.

She wasn't hiding.

She was inviting us.

Claire noticed it too.

"This feels like a trap."

"It is."

I looked at her.

"Then why walk in?"

I looked at Emma.

"Because we need answers."

Inside the church, the air smelled like dust and old wood.

The walls were covered with faded paintings.

Broken candles sat near the altar.

And in the center of the room...

A single table.

On it was a folder.

With my name.

ARTHUR HALE.

Emma stopped.

Her breathing changed.

"What?"

She stared at the folder.

"Sarah."

I walked toward it.

Before I could touch it, Emma grabbed my arm.

"Wait."

I looked at her.

"What?"

Her voice was quiet.

"She always leaves something behind."

I understood.

A message.

A test.

A trap.

A voice came from the balcony above.

"Still cautious, Emma."

Everyone turned.

A woman stepped into view.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

But unlike Emma...

There was no warmth in her eyes.

Sarah Hale looked down at us.

And smiled.

"Hello, sister."

Emma stared at her.

"Sarah."

The woman laughed softly.

"I was wondering how long it would take you to come looking for me."

I stepped forward.

"You sent the message."

Sarah looked at me.

"Of course."

"Why?"

She smiled.

"Because I wanted to see if Arthur Hale still existed."

My expression hardened.

"Who?"

She looked amused.

"Don't pretend."

A pause.

"You know exactly who you are."

Victor stepped forward.

Sarah looked at him.

"Interesting."

"What?"

"You brought him."

Victor's expression changed.

"Don't act like you control me."

Sarah smiled.

"Victor."

A pause.

"You have spent fifteen years believing you were the player."

She walked down the stairs.

"But you were always a piece."

Nobody spoke.

Because for once...

Victor Kane looked uncomfortable.

Sarah reached the floor.

She looked at Lily.

And her expression changed.

Not kindness.

Not anger.

Recognition.

"So this is her."

I immediately moved between them.

"Stay away from my daughter."

Sarah looked at me.

"Still protective."

She smiled.

"Emma was right about you."

My eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

"She always said your greatest strength was also your weakness."

I didn't respond.

"Your love."

Lily looked at Sarah.

"Why me?"

Sarah studied her.

"Because you are the last piece."

"The last piece of what?"

Sarah looked toward Emma.

"Tell her."

Emma remained silent.

Lily turned.

"Mom?"

Emma looked broken.

"I was hoping she would never know."

Sarah laughed.

"That was always your problem."

She looked at Lily.

"Your mother wanted to save you from the truth."

A pause.

"But the truth is the reason you were born."

I stepped forward.

"Enough."

Sarah looked at me.

"You still don't understand."

"I understand enough."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You understand violence."

"You understand betrayal."

"But you don't understand the reason behind it."

Sarah walked toward the table.

She opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Birth records.

Medical reports.

Research files.

Lily's name appeared everywhere.

My stomach tightened.

"What is this?"

Sarah looked at me.

"The beginning."

Emma closed her eyes.

"Sarah."

But Sarah continued.

"When Lily was born, we discovered something."

"What?"

Sarah looked at Lily.

"Her mother had access to information that powerful people wanted."

"That's not an answer."

Sarah smiled.

"No."

She picked up a document.

"Because the truth is much bigger."

She looked at Lily.

"You were not chosen because of the ledger."

Silence.

"You were chosen because of your mother."

Lily looked confused.

"My mother?"

Sarah nodded.

"Emma discovered something before Arthur ever found the ledger."

"What?"

"A pattern."

Sarah placed the document on the table.

"A hidden system that existed for generations."

Claire stepped closer.

"The network."

Sarah nodded.

"Exactly."

I looked at Emma.

"You knew?"

She looked away.

"Yes."

My chest tightened.

"How long?"

"Before we met."

The answer hurt.

But I kept listening.

Emma continued:

"Sarah and I spent years investigating them."

"Then what happened?"

Sarah answered.

"I realized the only way to defeat them was to join them."

Emma looked at her sister.

"No."

Sarah smiled sadly.

"That is where we disagreed."

The church became silent.

Sarah continued.

"Emma wanted to expose them."

"I wanted to control them."

"You became like them."

Sarah's expression hardened.

"No."

A pause.

"I became powerful enough to destroy them."

Emma shook her head.

"That's what you told yourself."

Lily looked between them.

"So which one of you is telling the truth?"

Nobody answered.

Because both women believed they were.

And that was always the most dangerous kind of conflict.

Suddenly, the church lights turned on.

Everyone turned.

A large screen behind the altar activated.

A video began playing.

A young Emma.

A young Sarah.

And a third person.

A man.

I froze.

Because I recognized him.

Before I could speak...

Lily whispered:

"Who is that?"

Emma looked at the screen.

Her face went pale.

"No."

I stared.

Because the man in the video...

Was my father.

The recording continued.

My father's voice filled the church.

"If you are seeing this..."

A pause.

"Then the truth has finally reached Lily."

Everyone looked at me.

I couldn't move.

Because my father had been dead for twenty years.

And yet...

He had left a message.

For my daughter.

The video continued.

"Arthur, I'm sorry."

My heart stopped.

"I should have told you sooner."

The screen flickered.

Then one sentence appeared:

"THE HALE FAMILY SECRET DID NOT START WITH YOU."

Nobody spoke.

Sarah watched me carefully.

Emma looked terrified.

Lily looked confused.

And I finally understood.

The Black Ledger.

Victor.

The betrayals.

The secrets.

They were not the beginning.

They were only the latest chapter.

Because the real story...

May you like

Started before I was born.

And my father had been hiding the truth from me all along.
