CHAPTER 18 — THE ORIGINAL OWNER

CHAPTER 18 — THE ORIGINAL OWNER
For ten seconds...
Nobody moved.
The church remained dark except for the faint glow of the final message on the screen.
"THE ORIGINAL OWNER."
Those three words carried more weight than any weapon.
Because everyone in that room believed the same thing.

The network was the enemy.
The corruption.
The monster we had spent years chasing.
But now we discovered something worse.
The network was never the beginning.
It was only a creation.
A tool.
And someone had created the person who created it.
Thomas stared at the screen.
For the first time since I met him...
He looked powerless.
Not because someone had a weapon.
Not because someone threatened him.
Because someone had exposed a truth he wanted buried.
"Who is this?"
I asked.
Nobody answered.
Not Thomas.
Not Emma.
Not Sarah.
That frightened me more than anything.
I looked at Thomas.
"You know."
His jaw tightened.
"No."
I stepped closer.
"Don't lie to me."
His eyes moved toward the message.
Then away.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Finally:
"Yes."
Everyone became still.
"You know who the Original Owner is?"
Thomas nodded.
"But you don't understand what that means."
"Then explain."
He looked older suddenly.
Much older.
"The network was never owned by one person."
A pause.
"It was controlled by a group."
Sarah interrupted.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
She shook her head.
"That is what they wanted everyone to believe."
Thomas looked at her.
"Sarah."
"No."
Her voice was different.
Not arrogant.
Not confident.
Afraid.
"There was always someone above the group."
Elena looked at the screen.
"This was impossible."
Claire turned toward her.
"You knew about this?"
Elena didn't answer.
That was enough.
The person who claimed to have created everything...
Was also afraid of someone.
Lily looked at the message.
"Why does it say owner?"
Emma moved closer to her.
"Because the network was never just information."
"Then what was it?"
Emma looked at Thomas.
"Power."
The church became silent.
Emma continued.
"The people who built the network believed information was the strongest weapon in the world."
She looked at Lily.
"They were wrong."
"Why?"
"Because information can be destroyed."
A pause.
"But loyalty..."
She looked around the room.
"...can be inherited."
I looked at Thomas.
"Your family."
He nodded.
"The Hales were never supposed to run the network."
A pause.
"We were supposed to protect it."
My expression hardened.
"Protect it from who?"
Thomas looked at the screen.
"The owner."
A sound came from the computer.
A new file opened.
No password.
No security.
No countdown.
Just a video.
Everyone gathered around.
The screen showed an old recording.
A man sitting in a dark room.
His face hidden.
Only his voice could be heard.
"To whoever finds this..."
A pause.
"You have reached the end of the first layer."
Claire frowned.
"First layer?"
The voice continued.
"The network was designed with three levels."
"Level one: Information."
"Level two: Influence."
"Level three: Control."
My stomach tightened.
"And the owner?"
The voice answered.
"The owner controls the third level."
The video showed images.
Presidents.
Business leaders.
Military officials.
Judges.
People who shaped history.
All connected.
Not by friendship.
By influence.
Lily stepped closer.
"Why show me this?"
The voice continued.
"Because you are the first person in generations who has the ability to end it."
Thomas looked at Lily.
Something changed in his expression.
Not fear.
Concern.
"That's why they wanted her."
Emma nodded.
"Yes."
I turned toward Emma.
"You knew about this?"
She looked at me.
"I knew there was someone above the network."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"Because knowing makes you a target."
I almost laughed.
"Emma."
A pause.
"I spent fifteen years being hunted."
She looked down.
"I know."
The video continued.
"The final authority is not stored in a file."
A pause.
"It is not stored in a machine."
The screen showed Lily's name.
"It exists in the person who chooses not to use it."
Everyone looked at Lily.
She looked confused.
"What does that mean?"
Thomas answered quietly.
"It means the system was designed to test you."
Lily looked at him.
"Test me?"
"Yes."
"How?"
Thomas looked at the destroyed network.
"You had the power to control everything."
A pause.
"But you destroyed it instead."
Silence.
Because that was the answer.
The network had expected someone to take the power.
Someone greedy.
Someone ambitious.
Someone who wanted control.
But Lily refused.
And that was why she won.
Suddenly, every phone in the room activated.
Everyone froze.
The screens displayed the same message.
"AUTHORITY TRANSFER COMPLETE."
Claire checked hers.
"This is impossible."
"What?"
She looked at me.
"The network didn't disappear."
My heart sank.
"What?"
She shook her head.
"It changed."
The screens updated.
A new symbol appeared.
Not the network symbol.
Something else.
A circle.
With a single line through the center.
Thomas went pale.
"No."
Emma looked at him.
"What?"
He whispered:
"The original system."
Elena stepped backward.
"I thought it was destroyed."
Thomas looked at her.
"It was never activated."
"Until now."
The message changed again.
"NEW ADMINISTRATOR IDENTIFIED."
Everyone looked at Lily.
She shook her head.
"No."
Thomas stepped closer.
"Lily..."
"I didn't do anything."
Emma looked at the screen.
Then at her daughter.
"Yes, you did."
The final message appeared:
"WELCOME, ADMINISTRATOR HALE."
The room exploded with confusion.
"No."
Lily backed away.
"I don't want this."
I immediately stood beside her.
"Then you don't have it."
But Thomas looked at me.
"You don't understand."
I turned.
"What?"
He looked terrified.
"The system doesn't ask."
A cold silence filled the church.
Because suddenly...
Destroying the network had created something else.
Something bigger.
Something nobody expected.
Then the church doors opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stood outside.
No weapon.
No guards.
Just a simple black coat.
He looked at Lily.
And smiled.
"Congratulations."
Nobody moved.
"Who are you?"
The man looked at me.
"My name is Adrian Vale."
A pause.
"And I am the last person alive who remembers the world before the network."
Thomas whispered:
"No."
Adrian smiled.
"Hello, Thomas."
A pause.
"You were always a loyal servant."
Thomas's face changed.
"Servant?"
Adrian looked toward Lily.
"Now she gets to decide whether she wants to be the owner..."
He looked back at Thomas.
"...or burn the entire system to the ground."
Lily stared.
The choice had returned.
Again.
But this time...
The stakes were different.
Because the network was gone.
May you like
And somehow...
The real battle had just begun.
