CHAPTER 12 — THE MAN BESIDE ME

CHAPTER 12 — THE MAN BESIDE ME

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The name on the screen remained there.

MICHAEL GRANT.

For several seconds, my mind refused to accept it.

Not because it was impossible.

Because it was too painful.

Michael had been there when I had nothing.

When I disappeared.

When I started over.

When Lily needed someone to watch over her while I worked two jobs just to keep our lives normal.

Michael was the man I trusted.

The man who helped me build a new life.

The man who stood beside me when I buried my past.

And now...

His name was on Emma's final message.

Lily looked at me.

"Dad."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"Is that true?"

I didn't answer immediately.

Because I didn't know.

And admitting that frightened me more than anything.

"I don't know."

Michael stood completely still.

His face had changed.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Recognition.

He knew that name on the screen meant something.

And I saw it.

I saw the smallest hesitation.

The smallest reaction.

But after a lifetime of reading people...

Small reactions were often the loudest.

"Michael."

He looked at me.

"Arthur..."

My voice was cold.

"Tell me I'm wrong."

The room became silent.

Michael looked down.

That was all it took.

Lily stepped backward.

"No."

Michael looked at her.

"Lily, listen."

"No."

Her eyes filled with disappointment.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

She shook her head.

"Everyone keeps telling me to listen after they already lied."

Victoria watched Michael carefully.

"Interesting."

Michael looked at her.

"What?"

She gave a small, bitter smile.

"After fifteen years, I wondered who would break first."

My eyes moved between them.

"You two know each other."

Neither answered.

That was another answer.

I stepped toward Michael.

"How long?"

He looked at me.

"Arthur..."

"How long have you known about the ledger?"

Silence.

Then:

"Since the beginning."

The words hit harder than I expected.

Lily covered her mouth.

Claire immediately moved closer.

"Are you admitting involvement?"

Michael shook his head.

"No."

"Then explain."

He looked at me.

"I knew about the ledger."

A pause.

"But I didn't know what Victor was planning."

I stared at him.

"That's not enough."

"I know."

"You watched my daughter grow up while knowing people were hunting her."

His expression broke.

"I was protecting her."

I almost laughed.

"Everyone says that."

Michael sat down slowly.

For the first time, he looked old.

Not like a powerful man.

Not like someone hiding secrets.

Just tired.

"I need to tell you everything."

Nobody interrupted.

He continued.

"After you disappeared, I stayed behind."

I frowned.

"Why?"

"Because someone had to."

His eyes moved toward Lily.

"Your wife asked me to."

My heart stopped.

"Emma?"

He nodded.

"She knew she couldn't protect Lily forever."

A pause.

"So she asked me to watch."

I looked at the screen.

At the bracelet.

At the message.

"Then why is your name there?"

Michael looked away.

"Because I took the bracelet."

Lily froze.

"You?"

Michael closed his eyes.

"Yes."

The room became completely silent.

Lily's voice trembled.

"Why?"

Michael looked at her.

"Because your mother told me to."

That answer shocked everyone.

I stepped forward.

"Explain."

Michael took a deep breath.

"The bracelet wasn't just a bracelet."

He looked at the screen.

"It contained a piece of information."

Claire frowned.

"How?"

"Emma designed it."

Michael nodded.

"The inside was modified. The key was stored there."

Lily touched her wrist instinctively.

"But why take it from me?"

Michael looked at her.

"Because someone was trying to take it from you."

A memory appeared on the screen.

A younger Lily.

Six years old.

Standing in the backyard.

Wearing the bracelet.

A man approached.

The video quality was poor.

But the figure was clear enough.

A man reaching toward Lily.

Michael paused the footage.

Everyone stared.

Because even after all these years...

I recognized him.

Victor.

My hands tightened.

"Victor was there?"

Michael nodded.

"He found out about the bracelet."

Victor, standing across the room, remained silent.

For once...

He had no clever response.

"You knew."

I looked at him.

"You knew she had it."

Victor's expression hardened.

"Not everything is as simple as you think."

I stepped toward him.

"She was a child."

Victor looked away.

And that was the closest thing to an admission I had ever seen from him.

Michael continued.

"That night, I took the bracelet."

Lily looked confused.

"But I remember losing it."

"You were supposed to."

"What?"

Michael looked at her.

"Emma wanted everyone to believe it was gone."

"Why?"

"Because Victor was watching."

The pieces began connecting.

The bracelet.

The key.

The hidden room.

Emma's message.

But something still didn't make sense.

I looked at Michael.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

His eyes became heavy.

"Because Emma asked me not to."

I froze.

"What?"

"She said if you knew, you would come back."

That hurt.

Because she knew me.

She knew exactly what I would do.

Michael continued:

"She knew you would sacrifice everything."

A pause.

"She wanted you to have a life with Lily."

I looked at my daughter.

At everything she had lost.

Everything I tried to protect.

And suddenly I wondered if my silence had protected her...

Or simply delayed the pain.

Lily walked toward Michael.

Everyone watched.

"Did you ever think of me as your daughter?"

Michael looked at her.

His eyes filled.

"Every day."

"Then why did you lie?"

"Because I was afraid."

"Of what?"

"Of failing your mother."

Lily looked away.

"You all loved me."

A pause.

"But nobody trusted me with the truth."

Nobody spoke.

Because nobody could deny it.

Then the computer made a sound.

A new message appeared.

"MEMORY FILE UNLOCKED."

The screen displayed another video.

Emma.

But this time...

She looked frightened.

Not calm.

Not prepared.

Frightened.

"Arthur..."

Her voice shook.

"If this message appears, then Michael has finally told you."

I looked at Michael.

Emma continued:

"There's something you need to know."

She looked directly into the camera.

"Michael did not betray us."

A pause.

"But someone else did."

Everyone froze.

The video continued.

"The person who gave Victor information..."

Emma swallowed.

"Was not working alone."

The screen flickered.

Then a final sentence appeared:

"THERE WERE TWO BETRAYERS."

Everyone looked around the room.

Two traitors.

One was not Michael.

Then who was the second?

Victor?

Victoria?

Richard?

Someone else?

The video continued.

Emma's final words appeared:

"Arthur, trust your instincts."

A pause.

"Because the person closest to you..."

The screen went black.

Then one final word appeared:

"IS STILL HERE."

The lights suddenly went out.

The entire house went dark.

Claire reached for her weapon.

Michael stood.

Victor moved toward the wall.

Then came a sound.

A quiet click.

Like someone opening a door.

From upstairs.

Lily grabbed my arm.

"Dad..."

I looked toward the staircase.

Because everyone in that room was standing beside me.

Everyone except one person.

And that meant whoever was upstairs...

Had been hiding here the entire time.

A shadow appeared at the top of the stairs.

And then a voice spoke.

A voice I never expected to hear again.

"Hello, Arthur."

My blood turned cold.

May you like

Because I knew that voice.

It belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.
