CHAPTER 11 — THE COUNTDOWN

CHAPTER 11 — THE COUNTDOWN

The timer continued.

23:59:42.

23:59:41.

23:59:40.

Every second felt louder than the last.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone in that room understood the same thing.

Emma had not left us a message.

She had left us a warning.

And whatever was going to happen when that countdown reached zero...

It had already been planned years ago.

Claire was the first to react.

"Can we stop it?"

She moved toward the computer.

Michael immediately followed.

"Don't touch anything."

Claire looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because if Emma built this system, then the countdown is probably connected to a security protocol."

I stared at the screen.

"Meaning?"

Michael looked at me.

"Meaning if we interrupt it, we might lose everything."

The timer continued.

23:38:12.

23:38:11.

I hated waiting.

Waiting had always been the hardest part.

When I was younger, waiting meant danger.

Waiting meant someone else had control.

But I had learned something over the years.

Sometimes patience was the only weapon that worked.

Lily stood near the doorway.

She looked overwhelmed.

"Dad."

I turned.

"What?"

She looked at the screen.

"How much of my life was planned?"

The question was painful.

Because I didn't know how to answer it.

"Not the important parts."

She looked at me.

"How do you know?"

"Because your mother and I loved you."

"But people were watching me."

I nodded.

"Yes."

"Richard married me because of this."

"Yes."

She swallowed.

"So how do I know what was real?"

That question hurt more than anything else.

Because I had asked myself the same thing.

Every memory.

Every decision.

Every person.

Could be questioned.

I walked closer.

"Lily."

She looked up.

"The first time you walked, nobody was watching."

Her eyes filled.

"The first time you rode a bike, nobody was watching."

A pause.

"When you got your first job, when you called me crying after your first breakup, when you told me you wanted to become a teacher..."

I smiled slightly.

"Those moments were real."

She looked away.

"How can you be sure?"

"Because nobody would create those memories just to use them."

The sound of footsteps interrupted us.

Everyone turned.

Richard.

He was still under supervision.

But somehow...

He looked calmer.

Too calm.

"You finally found it."

My eyes narrowed.

"What?"

"The room."

I stepped toward him.

"How much did you know?"

Richard smiled bitterly.

"Not enough."

"Explain."

He looked at Lily.

"I knew your father had secrets."

His voice lowered.

"I knew you were important."

Lily stared at him.

"Did you ever love me?"

The question hit him.

For the first time, Richard looked uncomfortable.

"Lily..."

"No."

Her voice was stronger.

"I want the truth."

Richard looked down.

"I don't know."

Silence.

Everyone froze.

Because that answer was worse than a lie.

"You don't know?"

Lily's voice shook.

Richard rubbed his face.

"When I first met you..."

He stopped.

"I was supposed to get close to you."

My fists tightened.

"But then?"

He looked at her.

"Then it became complicated."

"Because you cared?"

Richard didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Lily looked away.

"I spent two years defending you."

Richard closed his eyes.

"I know."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You don't."

Her voice became emotional.

"I defended you when people asked questions."

"I defended you when I was scared."

"I defended you when I should have been leaving."

Richard looked broken.

But I didn't feel sympathy.

Because regret after being caught was not the same as remorse before causing damage.

The timer continued.

18:00:00.

A new message appeared.

"PHASE ONE COMPLETE."

Everyone looked at the screen.

Then another line appeared.

"IDENTITY VERIFICATION REQUIRED."

Claire frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Michael answered quietly.

"Emma created a final security check."

"For who?"

Michael looked at Lily.

Everyone understood.

The computer displayed a question.

"What was the first thing your father gave you?"

Lily stared.

"What?"

A second line appeared.

"Answer required."

Claire looked confused.

"Is this a password?"

I shook my head.

"No."

I knew Emma.

This wasn't about information.

It was about memory.

Lily stepped closer to the screen.

"I don't know."

The computer remained silent.

Then:

"Incorrect."

The timer continued.

17:42:10.

Lily looked scared.

"I don't remember."

I walked toward her.

"Don't force it."

She looked at me.

"But what if I can't?"

"You can."

"Dad..."

I held her shoulders.

"This isn't about proving anything."

"Then what is it?"

"It's about remembering."

She closed her eyes.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then her breathing changed.

A small movement.

A memory.

"I..."

Everyone waited.

"I remember a box."

I looked at her.

"What box?"

"When I was little."

She frowned.

"A wooden box."

The screen remained unchanged.

She continued.

"Mom gave it to you."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

Lily opened her eyes.

"I don't know why, but I remember you holding it."

The computer flashed.

MEMORY MATCH DETECTED.

Everyone froze.

The timer stopped.

A new video appeared.

Emma.

Older footage.

Before she died.

She looked directly into the camera.

"Lily."

My daughter's eyes filled.

"If you're seeing this, then you remembered."

Emma smiled.

"I knew you would."

She looked toward the camera.

"Arthur always believed protecting you meant keeping you away from the truth."

A pause.

"But sometimes protection becomes another kind of prison."

I lowered my eyes.

Because she was right.

Emma continued:

"Lily, your father gave you the greatest gift."

A pause.

"He gave you a normal childhood."

She smiled.

"And now it's time for you to give him something."

The video changed.

A photograph appeared.

A young Lily.

Holding a small wooden box.

Everyone looked at me.

Because I remembered.

That box.

The one I thought was just a childhood memory.

The one Emma gave Lily on her sixth birthday.

Inside was supposed to be a simple bracelet.

A keepsake.

Nothing more.

Except now...

I realized something.

It was never just a bracelet.

The video continued.

"The key was never hidden inside Lily."

Emma said.

"It was hidden in something Lily loved."

The screen displayed one sentence:

"THE BRACELET."

Lily whispered:

"My bracelet?"

I nodded slowly.

"The one you lost."

Her face changed.

"I didn't lose it."

Everyone looked at her.

"What?"

She closed her eyes.

"I remember."

A pause.

"Someone took it."

The room went silent.

"Who?" I asked.

Lily's breathing became faster.

She looked terrified.

"I don't know."

The screen flashed again.

A final message appeared.

"MEMORY RECOVERY AVAILABLE."

Then:

"SELECT NEXT MEMORY."

Three options appeared.

1. THE NIGHT OF THE FIRE

2. THE LAST DAY WITH MOM

3. THE PERSON WHO TOOK THE BRACELET

Nobody spoke.

Because all three choices mattered.

All three were connected.

Claire looked at me.

"We need to choose."

I looked at Lily.

She stared at the screen.

Then she whispered:

"The person who took it."

My expression changed.

"Are you sure?"

She nodded.

"Because whoever took that bracelet..."

Her eyes filled with determination.

"Is the reason my whole life was turned upside down."

I pressed the selection.

3. THE PERSON WHO TOOK THE BRACELET

The screen went black.

Then a name appeared.

A name that made everyone in the room freeze.

Because it wasn't Victor.

It wasn't Richard.

It wasn't Victoria.

It was someone impossible.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had been beside me for years.

The name appeared:

MICHAEL GRANT.

May you like

And suddenly...

The man who came to help us became the person we had to fear.
