CHAPTER 6 — VICTORIA CROSS RETURNS

CHAPTER 6 — VICTORIA CROSS RETURNS

The knock came again.

Three slow taps.

Not rushed.

Not nervous.

Confident.

Whoever stood outside that door knew exactly what they were doing.

They wanted us to know they were there.

Claire raised one hand.

Everyone stopped moving.

"Nobody opens that door," she whispered.

I didn't need to be told.

My eyes stayed fixed on the entrance.

Because there were only a few people in the world who could walk into my life after fifteen years and make an entire room feel smaller.

Victoria Cross was one of them.

The woman outside spoke again.

"Arthur."

Her voice was exactly how I remembered.

Calm.

Controlled.

Almost gentle.

That was the dangerous part.

People like Victoria never needed to raise their voices.

They had already calculated the outcome.

"You know I'm here," she said.

I looked at Claire.

She nodded silently.

Two agents moved toward the side entrance.

Michael stood near the hallway, watching me carefully.

He knew.

He knew this wasn't just another investigation.

This was history coming back.

I stepped closer to the door.

"Victoria."

The hallway became completely silent.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then she laughed softly.

"I wondered if you would still recognize me."

"I recognized you the moment I saw your picture."

A pause.

"Of course you did."

Her voice lowered.

"You always noticed everything."

I stared at the door.

"Why are you here?"

"Because your daughter is in danger."

My expression hardened.

"You're the reason she's in danger."

Silence.

Then:

"No."

Her answer came immediately.

"Richard is the reason Lily was hurt."

I clenched my jaw.

"You put him in my daughter's life."

Another pause.

"Yes."

The honesty surprised me.

Victoria continued:

"But I did not tell him to hurt her."

I almost laughed.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No."

Her voice became quieter.

"I expect you to investigate."

Claire moved closer.

"Arthur, don't engage."

But I already knew something.

Victoria didn't come here to fight.

If she wanted to hurt us, she wouldn't be standing outside the door.

She would have done it silently.

Like she always did.

I unlocked the door.

Claire immediately looked at me.

"You sure?"

"No."

I opened it anyway.

Victoria Cross stood beneath the porch light.

She looked older.

Everyone does after fifteen years.

But some things never change.

Her posture.

Her expression.

The way her eyes studied every detail around her.

She wore a simple dark coat.

No jewelry.

No signs of wealth.

No obvious weapons.

But Victoria had never needed any of those things.

Her mind was enough.

She looked at me.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she said:

"You really did it."

I frowned.

"Did what?"

"You became exactly what you always wanted to be."

I said nothing.

"A father."

The word sounded strange coming from her.

Almost like she respected it.

Almost.

"You don't get to talk about my family."

She nodded.

"Fair."

Her eyes moved past me.

Toward Lily's room.

Instantly, my body reacted.

"Don't."

Victoria looked back.

"That's exactly why you're still dangerous, Arthur."

"What?"

"You protect first."

She took a step closer.

"Think later."

My expression didn't change.

"You came here to lecture me?"

"No."

She reached into her coat.

Claire immediately raised her hand toward her weapon.

Victoria stopped.

Slowly, she removed a small envelope.

Then she placed it on the ground.

"I came to give you the truth."

Nobody moved.

The envelope sat between us.

A simple white envelope.

But I knew better.

Nothing involving Victoria was simple.

"What's inside?"

"Information about Richard."

"I already know enough."

"No."

Her eyes met mine.

"You know what he did."

A pause.

"You don't know why."

I stared at her.

"Explain."

Victoria looked around.

"Not here."

"Why?"

"Because someone is listening."

Claire immediately looked toward the security equipment.

"How do you know?"

Victoria gave a faint smile.

"Because I installed the technology they're using."

Everyone froze.

Claire stepped forward.

"You planted surveillance?"

Victoria looked at her.

"No."

She looked back at me.

"I removed it."

That caught my attention.

"What are you talking about?"

Victoria sighed.

"Arthur, you still don't understand."

She looked at me with something close to frustration.

"Richard was never the main threat."

I thought about the files.

The surveillance.

The hidden room.

The Black Ledger.

"Then who is?"

Victoria didn't answer.

Not immediately.

And that worried me.

Because Victoria always had an answer.

Finally, she said:

"Victor Kane."

Michael stepped forward.

"He knows about Lily?"

Victoria looked at him.

"He knows everything."

The name hung in the air.

Victor Kane.

The man who had controlled my old life.

The man who believed I betrayed him.

The man who had spent fifteen years searching for me.

I looked at Victoria.

"Where is he?"

She didn't answer.

Instead, she looked toward Lily's room.

"Before I tell you that, you need to understand something."

"What?"

"Your daughter was never just a way to reach you."

My stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria looked at me.

"It means Lily is connected to the ledger."

I immediately shook my head.

"No."

"Arthur."

"No."

My voice became colder.

"Leave my daughter out of this."

Victoria didn't back away.

"You think I want her involved?"

"Then why say it?"

"Because it's the truth."

I stepped outside.

The cold night air hit my face.

"You have five minutes."

Victoria nodded.

"That's all I need."

She looked toward the dark road.

"Richard was approached three years ago."

"By Victor?"

"Yes."

"What was the mission?"

Victoria looked at me.

"Find you."

I already knew that.

"Why Lily?"

"Because Victor discovered something."

"What?"

Victoria took a breath.

"The night you disappeared, you didn't just take the Black Ledger."

I stared at her.

"I told you. I destroyed it."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You copied it."

My expression changed.

Because she was right.

I had made one copy.

One backup.

One insurance policy.

But nobody knew.

Nobody except...

My eyes narrowed.

"How do you know that?"

Victoria looked away.

"Because I helped you make it."

The memory hit instantly.

The night before I left.

Victoria had helped me secure the files.

But I thought she never saw the contents.

"You lied."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Her answer came quietly.

"Because I was trying to protect you."

I almost laughed.

"Protect me?"

"You think I wanted Victor to find you?"

She looked at me.

"I spent fifteen years making sure he didn't."

The silence afterward felt heavier.

Because for the first time...

I didn't know whether Victoria was an enemy.

Or something more complicated.

Claire stepped outside.

"Arthur."

I looked at her.

"We have a problem."

"What?"

She held up her phone.

"The security team just detected movement."

"Where?"

She looked toward the road.

"Everywhere."

My eyes narrowed.

"What do you mean?"

Claire's expression was serious.

"We're surrounded."

The lights across the street turned on.

One.

Then another.

Then another.

Cars appeared at the end of the road.

Black vehicles.

Too many.

Victoria looked at them.

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"They found me."

Michael grabbed his weapon.

"Who?"

Victoria looked at me.

"Victor's people."

I looked toward Lily's room.

My daughter was inside.

The one person I had promised to protect.

And now the past I buried had arrived at my doorstep.

Victoria stepped closer.

"Arthur."

I looked at her.

"You need to make a decision."

"What decision?"

She pointed toward the vehicles.

"Do you want to survive..."

A pause.

"Or do you want to win?"

The first vehicle stopped.

The door opened.

Someone stepped out.

Even from a distance, I knew.

I knew that walk.

That confidence.

That arrogance.

Victor Kane had finally returned.

And this time...

May you like

He wasn't coming for the ledger.

He was coming for my daughter.
