CHAPTER 5 — THE SECRET LILY NEVER KNEW

CHAPTER 5 — THE SECRET LILY NEVER KNEW
The first thing I did after seeing the photograph was not make a phone call.
It wasn't to Claire.
It wasn't to Michael.
It wasn't to anyone.
I simply sat there.

Quietly.
Because anger was easy.
Fear was easy.
But thinking...
Thinking was what kept people alive.
The picture on my phone showed Lily sleeping in the hospital.
Taken from inside her room.
The person who took it had been close enough to see her face.
Close enough to know where she was.
Close enough to send me a warning.
That meant one thing.
The enemy wasn't watching from a distance.
They were already inside the walls.
At 5:15 the next morning, Claire arrived at the safe house.
She walked in carrying a laptop and three folders.
No greeting.
No unnecessary words.
"We found the source of the photo."
I looked up.
"Who?"
She placed the laptop on the table.
"Hospital security footage."
She opened the file.
The video showed a nurse walking down the hallway.
Normal.
Calm.
Then she entered Lily's room.
Five minutes later, she came out.
But something was different.
She wasn't walking like a nurse anymore.
She was walking like someone who knew exactly what she was doing.
"That's not a hospital employee," I said.
Claire nodded.
"No."
The footage zoomed in.
The woman's face became clearer.
I recognized her immediately.
Not because I had seen her recently.
Because I remembered her from a lifetime ago.
"Victoria Cross."
Michael, standing near the window, went pale.
"She's alive?"
I looked at him.
"You knew she was supposed to be dead?"
Michael didn't answer.
That was an answer.
Victoria Cross.
The name carried weight.
Years ago, she wasn't just another person in Victor Kane's organization.
She was his closest strategist.
The person who could predict what people would do before they even realized they had made a decision.
She wasn't violent.
She didn't need to be.
Her weapon was information.
She knew people's fears.
Their weaknesses.
Their secrets.
And she knew mine.
Because she was there the night I disappeared.
Fifteen years earlier...
The rain was pouring.
I remember standing outside an abandoned warehouse with a small case in my hand.
Inside that case was everything Victor Kane had built his empire around.
The evidence.
The Black Ledger.
The thing powerful people would kill to recover.
Victor thought I was loyal.
He thought I would protect him.
He was wrong.
I looked at the files one last time.
Then I looked at Victoria.
She stood across from me.
"You really think you can walk away?"
Her voice was calm.
Almost sad.
"I already did."
She shook her head.
"No, Arthur."
She looked at the case.
"You walked away from the game."
A pause.
"But the game didn't walk away from you."
I left that night.
Or at least...
I thought I did.
Back in the safe house, Claire closed the laptop.
"Arthur."
I looked at her.
"What?"
"We need to discuss Lily."
My expression changed.
"No."
"Listen to me."
"No."
My voice became sharper.
"My daughter is not a target."
Claire didn't flinch.
"I know."
She opened another file.
"But someone has spent years watching her."
She placed documents in front of me.
School records.
Travel records.
Employment information.
Medical records.
Every major moment of Lily's adult life.
Tracked.
Recorded.
Analyzed.
My hands tightened.
"How long?"
Claire looked at me.
"Since before she met Richard."
The room went silent.
That changed everything.
Richard wasn't the beginning.
He was just the latest move.
I walked into Lily's room.
She was awake.
Looking out the window.
For a moment, I saw the little girl she used to be.
The girl who believed her father could fix anything.
"Dad."
I sat beside her.
"How are you feeling?"
"Better."
She looked at me.
"But I know you're hiding something."
I sighed.
"You always were too smart."
She gave a weak smile.
"I got that from you."
That hurt.
Because I wondered how much of my past had already affected her.
"Lily..."
She looked serious.
"Tell me the truth."
I stayed quiet.
"Was Richard chosen because of you?"
The question was so direct that I couldn't avoid it.
"I don't know."
"But you think yes."
I looked away.
"Yes."
She swallowed.
"How long?"
"What?"
"How long have people been watching me?"
I didn't answer quickly enough.
And she knew.
Her eyes filled with sadness.
"Years?"
I nodded.
She looked down.
"So my whole life..."
"No."
I reached for her hand.
"Your life was yours."
"But you were protecting me from something I didn't even know existed."
"Yes."
She pulled her hand away.
Not angrily.
Just overwhelmed.
"I don't know who my father is anymore."
Those words hurt more than any physical injury I had seen.
"Lily..."
She looked at me.
"I spent my entire life thinking you were just my dad."
I nodded.
"I wanted you to."
"Why?"
"Because you deserved a normal life."
She looked around the room.
"Does this look normal?"
I had no answer.
That afternoon, Michael found something.
Something hidden inside Richard's mansion.
A secret room.
Not a large one.
Not obvious.
Hidden behind a false wall in his office.
Inside were dozens of files.
Most were about business.
But one folder was different.
The label on it made my heart stop.
ARTHUR HALE
I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Old photographs.
Me.
My old identity.
My old contacts.
My old life.
But then I saw something that made me freeze.
A photograph of Lily.
Taken when she was five years old.
On the back was a handwritten note.
"Subject confirmed. Daughter remains unaware."
My breathing stopped.
They weren't just watching me.
They were watching her.
From childhood.
Claire looked through the files.
"This proves Richard was involved."
I shook my head.
"No."
She looked at me.
"What?"
"Richard wasn't the one controlling this."
I pointed at the documents.
"Look at the handwriting."
Claire studied it.
Then her face changed.
"You recognize it."
I nodded.
"Victoria."
Michael stepped closer.
"Then Richard was working for her."
I looked at the files.
The truth finally became clear.
Richard wasn't the mastermind.
He was a pawn.
A wealthy, arrogant pawn who thought he was powerful.
But someone else had been moving him.
Someone who knew exactly how to manipulate him.
That night, Lily finally asked the question I knew was coming.
"Who is Victoria?"
I sat across from her.
Trying to decide how much truth I could give her.
Finally, I answered.
"Someone from my past."
"Someone dangerous?"
"Yes."
"Did she hurt me?"
I paused.
"Not directly."
Lily looked confused.
"Then why is she doing this?"
I looked at the files.
At the evidence.
At the years of surveillance.
"Because she wants something I took from her."
"What?"
I looked at my daughter.
"The truth."
At 2:00 a.m., the power went out.
Every light in the safe house shut off.
The security system went dark.
Claire immediately reached for her phone.
"That shouldn't happen."
Michael moved toward the window.
"Someone disabled the backup."
I stood still.
Listening.
Then I heard it.
A sound outside.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Confident.
Someone who wasn't trying to hide.
A knock came at the front door.
Three times.
Everyone froze.
Then a woman's voice came from the other side.
A voice I hadn't heard in fifteen years.
"Arthur."
My blood ran cold.
"Open the door."
A pause.
"You and I need to talk."
I looked at Lily.
Then at Claire.
Then at the door.
Because I knew exactly who was standing outside.
Victoria Cross had finally come back.
May you like
And this time...
She wasn't hiding.
