CHAPTER 13 — THE WOMAN WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN GONE

CHAPTER 13 — THE WOMAN WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN GONE
The voice echoed through the dark house.
"Hello, Arthur."
For a moment...
I couldn't breathe.
Not because I was afraid.
Because my mind was fighting against what my ears were telling me.
Some voices stay with you forever.
Especially the voices of people you loved.
Especially the voices of people you buried.

The figure slowly stepped into the dim light.
And the world stopped.
"Lily..."
My daughter's fingers tightened around my arm.
"Dad?"
I couldn't answer.
Because the woman standing at the top of the stairs was impossible.
She looked older.
Different.
But there was no mistaking her.
The same eyes.
The same expression.
The same small scar above her eyebrow.
A scar I remembered from the night we met.
A scar I had kissed a thousand times.
"Emma."
The name left my mouth before I could stop it.
Lily gasped.
The entire room froze.
Because everyone knew what that name meant.
Emma Hale.
My wife.
Lily's mother.
The woman we buried fifteen years ago.
The woman who was supposed to be gone.
Nobody moved.
Nobody knew how.
Even Victor looked stunned.
And that was the first thing that told me this was real.
Victor Kane was prepared for everything.
Except this.
Emma slowly walked down the stairs.
Every step felt like a memory.
Every movement felt like a ghost returning.
When she reached the bottom, she looked at me.
Neither of us spoke.
Because what could possibly be said after fifteen years?
"You died."
My voice sounded broken.
Emma looked down.
"Yes."
The answer was simple.
Too simple.
Lily stepped forward.
"No."
Her voice trembled.
"No, this isn't possible."
Emma looked at her.
And the moment she saw Lily...
Everything changed.
The powerful woman disappeared.
The survivor disappeared.
Only a mother remained.
"Lily."
My daughter covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Mom?"
Emma nodded.
And Lily broke.
She didn't run.
She didn't scream.
She just stood there.
Because sometimes the biggest shocks are too large for the body to process.
"You were alive?"
Emma looked at her.
"I was."
Lily shook her head.
"All these years?"
Emma closed her eyes.
"Yes."
"Why?"
That one word carried fifteen years of pain.
Why?
Why did you leave?
Why did you let me grow up without you?
Why did Dad suffer?
Why did everyone lie?
Emma looked at her daughter.
"I thought I was protecting you."
Lily laughed softly.
But there was no happiness in it.
"Everyone says that."
Emma looked down.
And for the first time...
She looked ashamed.
I stepped forward.
"Explain."
Emma looked at me.
"I owe you more than anyone."
"Fifteen years."
She nodded.
"I know."
"Fifteen years believing you were gone."
"I know."
"Fifteen years raising Lily alone."
Her eyes filled.
"I know."
My anger was there.
But beneath it was something worse.
Pain.
Because a part of me wanted to run to her.
And another part wanted answers.
"Why didn't you come back?"
Emma looked at Victor.
Then at Victoria.
Then at Michael.
Finally, she looked at me.
"Because if I came back..."
She paused.
"They would have found Lily."
Victor finally spoke.
"This was your plan?"
Everyone turned.
Emma looked at him.
"No."
Her voice became cold.
"This was my survival."
Victor smiled slightly.
"Still blaming me?"
Emma stared at him.
"You destroyed everything."
A silence followed.
Not an argument.
Not a disagreement.
A history.
I looked between them.
"You two know each other."
Emma nodded.
"Yes."
"How?"
She took a breath.
"Before you knew about the ledger..."
She looked at me.
"I knew."
The words hit me.
"You were involved?"
"Yes."
I felt the betrayal immediately.
Not because she knew.
Because she didn't tell me.
Emma continued.
"But I wasn't working for Victor."
Victor laughed.
"Everyone says that."
Emma ignored him.
"I was investigating him."
Daniel stepped forward.
"You're the original source."
Emma looked at him.
"Yes."
Everyone looked confused.
Claire asked:
"Original source of what?"
Emma looked toward the computer.
"The information that became the Black Ledger."
The room became silent.
I stared at her.
"You created it?"
"No."
She shook her head.
"I discovered it."
A pause.
"And Arthur..."
She looked at me.
"You were the only person I trusted enough to expose it."
I remembered.
The first night I saw the files.
The first night I realized how deep the corruption went.
Emma was there.
She had always been there.
Lily looked at her mother.
"Then why leave?"
Emma looked at her.
"Because someone inside our circle betrayed us."
Everyone became still.
"The night you think I died..."
She looked at me.
"I was supposed to meet Arthur."
My chest tightened.
"What?"
Emma nodded.
"But someone knew."
A pause.
"They knew where I was."
The room became colder.
"Someone gave my location away."
I looked around.
The second betrayer.
The person who had been close.
Emma continued:
"I survived."
Nobody spoke.
"But I couldn't return."
"Why?"
Her eyes moved toward Lily.
"Because the person who betrayed us still had access to you."
Lily stepped back.
"So you left me?"
Emma's face broke.
"No."
Her voice cracked.
"I watched you."
Lily froze.
"What?"
"Every birthday."
"Every graduation."
"Every moment I could."
Tears filled Emma's eyes.
"But staying would have put you in danger."
Lily looked hurt.
"Do you know what it feels like to lose your mother?"
Emma whispered:
"Yes."
A pause.
"Because I lost you too."
The emotional moment was interrupted.
A gunshot.
Everyone dropped.
The window behind us shattered.
Claire immediately pulled Lily down.
Michael moved toward the side entrance.
Victor disappeared behind cover.
I grabbed Emma and pulled her away from the open area.
Another shot.
Then silence.
"Sniper," Claire said.
Her voice was calm.
"Location?"
Michael looked at the sensors.
"Unknown."
Daniel checked his phone.
Then his face changed.
"What?"
I looked at him.
"Who is it?"
He turned the screen toward me.
A message had appeared.
One sentence.
"THE DEAD SHOULD STAY DEAD."
Underneath was a name.
A name I had never expected.
SARAH HALE.
I stared.
"Who is Sarah?"
Nobody answered.
Then Emma whispered:
"My sister."
The room went silent.
I looked at Emma.
"Your sister died years ago."
Emma's expression changed.
"No."
She shook her head.
"That's what everyone believed."
Another message appeared.
"YOU FOUND EMMA."
"NOW FIND ME."
The screen showed a location.
An abandoned church outside town.
Emma looked terrified.
Not because of the place.
Because of the person waiting there.
"Arthur..."
I looked at her.
"Who is Sarah?"
Emma swallowed.
"The person who started all of this."
A pause.
"The person who betrayed us."
I felt my hands tighten.
"The second betrayer."
Emma nodded.
"Yes."
Then she said something that changed everything.
"Sarah isn't working for Victor."
"Victor is working for Sarah."
Nobody spoke.
Because suddenly the entire story had changed.
Victor Kane wasn't the mastermind.
Richard wasn't.
The second betrayal wasn't a mystery anymore.
It was a person we never knew existed.
A person who had been hiding behind everyone.
Emma looked toward the dark window.
"She wants us to go to the church."
I grabbed my jacket.
"Then we go."
Emma looked at me.
"Arthur..."
I stopped.
"What?"
Her voice became quiet.
"Sarah knows something about Lily."
My expression hardened.
"What?"
Emma looked at my daughter.
"Something I never told you."
Lily stared.
"What is it?"
Emma's eyes filled with fear.
"Sarah knows why Lily was chosen."
The room went silent.
And for the first time in fifteen years...
I realized something terrifying.
I had spent my entire life protecting my daughter from the past.
May you like
But the truth was...
The past had been protecting something from her.
