CHAPTER 4 — THE FILE THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST

CHAPTER 4 — THE FILE THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST
The message stayed on my phone for exactly three seconds.
Then it disappeared.
Not because I deleted it.
Because someone else did.
I watched the screen refresh.

The unknown number vanished.
The entire conversation was gone.
No trace.
No record.
Nothing.
A normal person would have been confused.
I wasn't.
I knew exactly what it meant.
Someone had access.
Someone was watching.
Someone wanted me to know they could reach me whenever they wanted.
I slipped the phone into my pocket and walked back into Lily's room.
She was awake.
Staring at the ceiling.
Thinking.
I knew that look.
It was the same expression she had when she was a child and trying to solve a problem she didn't understand.
"Dad."
I stopped.
"Yeah?"
She looked at me.
"Am I the reason this is happening?"
The question hit harder than any threat.
"No."
She looked away.
"But if Richard didn't know you had this past... if Victor Kane wasn't connected to you..."
"Lily."
She looked back.
I walked closer.
"Listen carefully."
I sat beside her.
"Nothing that happened to you is because of me."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"But you said someone is after you."
"Yes."
"And they came through Richard."
I nodded.
"But Richard made his own choices."
I held her hand.
"He hurt you because he believed he could."
A pause.
"That is his responsibility."
She looked down.
"I stayed because I thought I could fix him."
Those words were quiet.
Almost a whisper.
And I realized something.
Richard had broken her long before Easter Sunday.
The bruises would heal.
The fear would take longer.
"Lily."
She looked at me.
"You don't fix people who choose to hurt you."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"I know that now."
An hour later, Claire returned.
This time, she looked more serious.
That told me everything.
"What happened?" I asked.
She closed the door behind her.
"We found something inside Richard's estate."
"What?"
She placed a small evidence bag on the table.
Inside was a key.
Old.
Metal.
With a number engraved on it.
"Where did you find this?"
"In Richard's private office."
I looked at it carefully.
"That wasn't there by accident."
Claire nodded.
"We think so too."
Michael entered behind her.
His expression was different.
More concerned.
"Arthur."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He glanced at Claire.
Then back at me.
"Do you remember the Black Ledger?"
The room went silent.
Even Claire noticed the change in my expression.
"The Black Ledger doesn't exist anymore."
Michael shook his head.
"That's what we wanted everyone to believe."
I stood slowly.
"Who has it?"
Michael didn't answer immediately.
That was enough.
"Victor."
Fifteen years earlier...
The Black Ledger was never supposed to exist.
It wasn't a book.
Not exactly.
It was a collection of information.
Names.
Transactions.
Hidden agreements.
Proof of things powerful people spent millions trying to hide.
Governments.
Corporations.
Criminal networks.
Everyone had secrets.
The ledger contained too many.
When I discovered what Victor was planning, I knew I couldn't let him control it.
So I took it.
Not for money.
Not for power.
To stop him.
I disappeared.
I destroyed my identity.
I thought I destroyed the ledger.
But apparently...
I was wrong.
"Why would Richard have a key connected to it?" Claire asked.
I stared at the key.
"Because Richard wasn't just married to my daughter."
The words felt heavy.
"He was connected to something bigger."
Michael nodded.
"Exactly."
Claire opened another file.
"We looked into Richard's financial history."
She placed documents on the table.
"His real estate empire has unusual investors."
I scanned the papers.
Several company names.
Several offshore accounts.
Then one name appeared.
A name that made my stomach tighten.
Kane Holdings.
I looked up.
"How long?"
Claire answered.
"Almost from the beginning of his marriage."
So Richard didn't find Lily by accident.
He wasn't just a controlling husband.
He was an entry point.
A way into my life.
A way into my past.
A way to find me.
I walked to the window.
Outside, the sun was setting.
A beautiful evening.
A peaceful evening.
The kind of evening normal families enjoyed.
But my family hadn't been normal for a long time.
"They used my daughter."
My voice was quiet.
Michael nodded.
"Yes."
I turned around.
"Why?"
Michael hesitated.
"Because Victor believed you left something with her."
"What?"
"We don't know."
I looked at Lily.
She was sleeping again.
The medication had finally taken effect.
Michael lowered his voice.
"Arthur..."
"What?"
"You need to consider the possibility that Lily knows something."
I immediately shook my head.
"No."
"You don't know that."
"I know my daughter."
Michael looked at me.
"You know the daughter you raised."
A pause.
"But Victor may have reached her before you realized."
The thought made my blood run cold.
That night, we moved Lily to a secure location.
Not because she wanted to leave.
Because I refused to take another chance.
The house belonged to an old friend.
Hidden.
Quiet.
Protected.
When Lily arrived, she looked around.
"Dad."
"Yeah?"
"Are we hiding?"
I looked at her.
"No."
"Then what are we doing?"
I answered honestly.
"We're preparing."
She studied my face.
"For what?"
I looked out at the dark road beyond the window.
"For the people who think they can hurt us."
At midnight, Claire received a call.
Her expression changed immediately.
She walked into the room.
"Arthur."
I knew.
"What happened?"
She held out her phone.
A video was playing.
It was security footage.
From Richard's mansion.
The date was three months earlier.
The camera showed Richard entering his office.
Then another person entered.
A woman.
I couldn't see her face.
But I knew her voice.
Because she was speaking clearly.
"Does he suspect anything?"
Richard answered.
"No."
"Arthur still thinks he is just a father."
The woman laughed.
"He has no idea who his daughter really is."
My heart stopped.
Claire paused the video.
"Arthur..."
I didn't answer.
Because I was already thinking the same thing.
The woman continued speaking.
"The girl has no idea what her father left behind."
The video froze.
The woman's face was still hidden.
But the voice...
The voice was enough.
I knew exactly who it belonged to.
Someone from my past.
Someone who should have been gone.
Someone who knew the truth about Lily.
I whispered her name.
"Victoria."
Michael's face changed.
"No."
I looked at him.
"Yes."
The room became silent.
Because everyone understood what that meant.
Victor Kane wasn't working alone.
And the woman who knew my secrets...
Had been standing beside Richard all along.
Later that night, I sat beside Lily's bed.
She was asleep.
Peaceful.
For now.
I watched her breathing.
And I remembered the promise I made the day she was born.
Protect her.
No matter the cost.
My phone vibrated.
Another message.
This time, it wasn't hidden.
A picture appeared.
A picture of Lily.
Taken today.
Inside the hospital.
Someone had been close.
Very close.
The message underneath was simple.
"You failed to protect her once."
A second message appeared.
"Don't fail again."
I stared at the screen.
Then I looked at my daughter.
My fear disappeared.
Because they made one mistake.
They thought they were threatening me.
They weren't.
They were reminding me why I never stopped fighting.
I turned off the phone.
And whispered:
"Now it's my turn."
Because Richard Whitmore had started a war.
May you like
But he had no idea...
I was the man who ended them.
