Chapter 9 — The Last Chance

Chapter 9 — The Last Chance
The courthouse hearing dominated the news for the next forty-eight hours.
Legal analysts debated Harrison Cole's strategy.
Business experts questioned whether Harrington Commercial Group would survive.
Commentators called it one of the most damaging financial investigations ever tied to a high-profile divorce in Pennsylvania.

But inside the lakeside estate, none of that mattered.
Khloe was focused on one thing.
Her daughter.
Early Wednesday morning, she sat in the nursery, carefully placing folded baby clothes into the dresser.
Tiny onesies.
Soft blankets.
A pair of pink socks no bigger than the palm of her hand.
She smiled.
"I wonder what you'll look like."
The baby kicked in response.
Khloe laughed.
"You always answer."
Evelyn leaned against the doorway.
"Talking to her again?"
"I think she likes it."
"I think she already knows her mother's voice."
Khloe looked around the nursery.
Three weeks ago, she couldn't even imagine bringing a baby into the world.
Now...
She couldn't imagine anything else.
Meanwhile, Harrison arrived at his office before sunrise.
His assistant, Megan, was already waiting.
"You have company."
"Who?"
She handed him a business card.
Michael Donovan
Senior Partner
Donovan & Pierce Corporate Law
Harrison recognized the name immediately.
Richard Harrington's lead corporate attorney.
"Send him in."
Moments later, Michael entered carrying only a leather briefcase.
He looked exhausted.
"I appreciate you seeing me."
Harrison remained standing.
"What can I do for you?"
Michael took a deep breath.
"I'm here on Richard's behalf."
Harrison said nothing.
"He wants to settle."
The room fell silent.
Harrison slowly sat down.
"What kind of settlement?"
Michael opened the briefcase.
"He'll transfer the lake house."
"The Philadelphia mansion."
"Fifty percent of his liquid assets."
"Primary custody to Khloe."
"He'll even resign permanently from Harrington Commercial."
Harrison calmly listened.
Then he asked one question.
"And the crimes?"
Michael lowered his eyes.
"He hopes those matters can... remain separate."
Harrison almost smiled.
"So."
"He wants mercy."
Michael nodded.
"He finally understands what he's done."
Harrison closed the folder without reading another page.
"He understands what he's lost."
"Those aren't always the same thing."
At the same time, Richard sat alone in the empty mansion.
He hadn't shaved in days.
The housekeeper quietly placed breakfast on the table.
It remained untouched.
He walked upstairs to the nursery.
The unfinished crib was still inside its box.
He finally opened it.
For nearly an hour, he assembled it alone.
Piece by piece.
Screw by screw.
When he finished, he stepped back.
A beautiful white crib stood in the center of the room.
It would never hold his daughter.
Richard rested one hand on the railing.
"I'm sorry."
The room, of course, offered no reply.
Back in Manhattan, Harrison called Khloe after meeting with Michael.
She answered immediately.
"Everything okay?"
"I need to ask you something."
"What is it?"
"Richard wants to settle."
Silence.
Finally, Khloe spoke.
"What does that mean?"
"It means he'll give up almost everything."
"In exchange?"
"No criminal interference."
Khloe slowly sat down.
"So he wants me to forgive him."
"No."
"He wants you to protect him."
She closed her eyes.
"I can't."
"I know."
"I'm not doing this because I'm angry."
"I know."
She gently rubbed her belly.
"If I ignore what he did..."
"What kind of example am I setting for my daughter?"
Harrison smiled softly.
"You already know the answer."
That afternoon, Detective Laura Bennett received an unexpected visitor.
Vanessa Kensington walked into her office without an appointment.
Laura looked surprised.
"Ms. Kensington."
Vanessa closed the door behind her.
"I want immunity."
Laura leaned back.
"That's a very specific request."
"I'll tell you everything."
Laura studied her carefully.
"Why now?"
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Because Richard lied to me too."
She placed a flash drive on the desk.
"That's every email I saved."
"Every text."
"Every financial document he ever asked me to hide."
Laura stared at the drive.
"Does he know you're here?"
Vanessa shook her head.
"No."
"He thinks I'm still protecting him."
Laura quietly picked up the flash drive.
Then she asked the question that mattered most.
"Are you willing to testify under oath?"
Vanessa hesitated.
Only for a moment.
"Yes."
Late that evening, Harrison received Laura's phone call.
"She flipped."
He wasn't surprised.
"Completely?"
"Completely."
"What did she give you?"
Laura laughed softly.
"Enough evidence to keep a jury busy for a month."
Harrison looked out the office window.
"Then Richard's case just became much simpler."
Hours later, Richard answered a knock at the mansion door.
He expected his attorney.
Instead...
Vanessa stood outside holding a small overnight bag.
He smiled weakly.
"I've been trying to reach you."
She walked inside without speaking.
Then she placed an envelope on the dining table.
"What is this?"
"My apartment keys."
Richard frowned.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm leaving."
His heart skipped.
"Vanessa..."
She looked directly at him.
"I loved the man you pretended to be."
"But I don't recognize the man standing in front of me."
Richard took a step closer.
"We'll get through this."
She slowly shook her head.
"No."
"You'll go through this."
"I'm done."
She turned toward the front door.
Richard called after her.
"What about our baby?"
Vanessa stopped walking.
Without turning around, she quietly replied,
"Our child deserves one honest parent."
Then she walked out.
The front door closed behind her.
Richard remained frozen in the middle of the empty dining room.
For the second time in a month...
Someone he thought would never leave...
Had chosen to walk away.
The following morning, Harrison visited the lakeside estate.
Khloe was sitting on the porch, knitting a tiny white blanket.
He sat beside her.
"I have good news."
She smiled.
"The baby?"
"No."
"You."
She looked confused.
"The judge approved your request."
"What request?"
He handed her an official court order.
Khloe read it carefully.
At the bottom of the page, she found one sentence.
The court grants temporary exclusive possession of the marital residence to Mrs. Khloe Harrington following the conclusion of ongoing renovations and legal proceedings.
She looked up.
"I don't want that house."
"I know."
"So why ask for it?"
Harrison smiled.
"Because sometimes justice isn't about keeping something."
"It's about proving it was yours all along."
Khloe folded the court order and placed it beside the half-finished baby blanket.
Then she looked across the peaceful lake.
"I don't miss the mansion anymore."
"What do you miss?"
She smiled sadly.
"The future I thought we were building."
Harrison nodded.
"I know."
"But your daughter still has a future."
Khloe rested both hands on her belly.
She felt a strong kick.
Then another.
She laughed.
"I think she agrees."
Far away in Philadelphia, Richard sat alone in the nursery, staring at the crib he had finished with his own hands.
It stood empty beneath the afternoon sunlight.
Just like the life he had spent years taking for granted.
May you like
And although he didn't know it yet...
The hardest goodbye of his life was still waiting for him.
