Chapter 12 — A Father's First Glimpse

Chapter 12 — A Father's First Glimpse

Morning sunlight streamed through the windows of St. Andrew's Medical Center.

The first rays of dawn warmed the quiet maternity floor.

Khloe sat comfortably in bed, cradling her newborn daughter in her arms.

The tiny girl had her mother's dark hair.

But when she slowly opened her eyes, they revealed the same deep blue color Richard had inherited from his own father.

Khloe smiled softly.

"You look just like both of us."

The baby yawned, stretching her tiny fingers before falling asleep again.

Dr. Melissa Grant stepped into the room with a chart in her hand.

"Good morning, Mom."

Khloe laughed.

"I don't think I'll ever get tired of hearing that."

Dr. Grant completed a quick examination before smiling.

"You both look wonderful."

"And someone has quite an appetite."

Khloe looked down at her daughter.

"I think she's making up for lost time."

"You'll probably be able to go home tomorrow."

Relief washed over Khloe's face.

"Thank you."

"You did all the hard work," Dr. Grant replied warmly.

Outside the room, Harrison was speaking quietly with Detective Laura Bennett.

"You came to the hospital?"

Laura smiled.

"As a friend."

Then her expression turned serious.

"I also wanted to warn you."

Harrison folded his arms.

"What happened?"

"The grand jury issued additional subpoenas overnight."

"To whom?"

"Former executives."

"Board members."

"And Richard's personal accountant."

Harrison nodded.

"The case is moving faster."

Laura lowered her voice.

"And Richard has officially rejected a plea deal."

That surprised him.

"He rejected it?"

"He insists on taking responsibility in court."

Harrison thought for a moment.

"Or he hopes for a miracle."

"Maybe."

Laura looked toward Khloe's room.

"Either way..."

"...your sister won't have to testify until after she's fully recovered."

Meanwhile, Richard had spent the entire night in the hospital chapel.

He hadn't slept.

He hadn't left.

Just after breakfast, Harrison found him there.

Richard immediately stood.

"How is she?"

"Khloe is doing well."

"And..."

He hesitated.

"The baby?"

Harrison's expression softened.

"She's healthy."

Richard closed his eyes in relief.

"Can I ask you something?"

"You can ask."

"I don't expect the answer to be yes."

Harrison waited.

"Could I..."

Richard swallowed.

"...see my daughter?"

For several long seconds, Harrison said nothing.

Finally, he spoke.

"Wait here."

Upstairs, Harrison knocked gently before entering Khloe's room.

She looked up.

"Everything okay?"

He nodded.

"Richard wants to see her."

Khloe lowered her eyes to the sleeping baby.

The room became quiet.

Evelyn respectfully stepped outside with Dr. Grant, leaving the siblings alone.

"What do you think?" Harrison asked.

Khloe looked at her daughter.

"I've imagined this moment a hundred different ways."

"And?"

"I never imagined feeling... peaceful."

She gently kissed the baby's forehead.

"I don't want her first memories to begin with hate."

Harrison nodded slowly.

"So?"

She smiled sadly.

"He gets five minutes."

Richard's hands trembled as he followed Harrison down the hallway.

Outside the hospital room, Harrison stopped.

"There are conditions."

Richard looked up.

"I'm listening."

"You don't discuss the divorce."

"You don't discuss the investigation."

"You don't upset Khloe."

Richard nodded immediately.

"I won't."

"And if she asks you to leave..."

"I leave."

Harrison stepped aside.

Richard quietly entered the room.

Khloe looked up as he walked in.

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.

Richard barely recognized the woman before him.

She looked tired.

But peaceful.

Stronger than he had ever seen her.

Then his eyes moved to the tiny bundle sleeping in her arms.

His daughter.

His breath caught.

"So..."

His voice cracked.

"So small."

Khloe smiled faintly.

"She weighs seven pounds."

Richard took one hesitant step closer.

"May I?"

Khloe carefully placed the baby into his waiting arms.

Richard held her as though she might break.

The little girl stretched, blinked twice, and slowly opened her eyes.

She looked directly at him.

Richard completely fell apart.

Tears streamed freely down his face.

"Hi..."

He whispered.

"I'm your dad."

The baby wrapped her tiny hand around one of his fingers.

Richard couldn't stop crying.

"I'm so sorry."

"So... so sorry."

Khloe watched quietly.

For the first time since discovering the betrayal...

She saw genuine regret.

Not excuses.

Not manipulation.

Just regret.

Five minutes became ten.

No one interrupted.

Richard never once looked away from his daughter.

Finally, he kissed the baby's forehead and carefully handed her back to Khloe.

"Thank you."

Khloe nodded.

"She deserves to know kindness."

Richard looked at both of them.

"I don't deserve either of you."

"No."

Khloe answered honestly.

"You don't."

Richard accepted the words without protest.

He walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he stopped.

"What did you name her?"

Khloe smiled.

"I haven't yet."

Richard looked surprised.

"I wanted to wait."

"For what?"

She looked down at the baby.

"To meet her."

Richard smiled through his tears.

"Whatever you choose..."

"...it'll be perfect."

Then he quietly left the room.

Outside, Harrison was waiting.

Richard approached him.

"I kept my promise."

"You did."

Richard took a deep breath.

"Thank you."

Harrison looked at him for a long moment.

"Don't waste today."

Richard frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"You finally saw what really matters."

He glanced toward the hospital room.

"Remember that when you're standing in front of a judge."

Richard slowly nodded.

"I will."

That afternoon, Khloe sat by the window with a notebook resting on her lap.

She had written dozens of names during her pregnancy.

Some were crossed out.

Others didn't feel right anymore.

Finally, she looked down at the sleeping baby.

"You've already survived more than most people ever should."

She smiled.

"I think your name should mean hope."

She picked up her pen and wrote two words.

Grace Elizabeth Cole Harrington

Grace.

Because grace had carried them through betrayal.

Through heartbreak.

Through fear.

Elizabeth.

After their late mother, who had taught Harrison and Khloe that family was measured by love, not perfection.

When Harrison returned that evening, Khloe showed him the birth certificate.

He smiled immediately.

"Mom would've loved it."

Khloe nodded.

"I think so too."

He gently touched his niece's tiny hand.

"Welcome to the family, Grace."

The little girl curled her fingers around his thumb.

Harrison laughed softly.

"I think she already knows who her uncle is."

Late that night, Richard sat alone in the empty nursery of the mansion.

On the dresser lay a single photograph.

The nurse had quietly printed it before they left the hospital.

Grace.

Sleeping peacefully in her mother's arms.

Richard placed the picture inside his wallet.

Everything else...

The mansion.

The company.

The money.

The reputation.

None of it fit there anymore.

Only one photograph did.

And as he looked at his daughter's tiny face, he silently made himself a promise.

He couldn't erase the past.

May you like

But if life gave him even the smallest chance...

He would spend every remaining day trying to become the father Grace deserved.
