Chapter 11 — A New Life Begins

Chapter 11 — A New Life Begins

Khloe took a slow breath as another contraction swept through her body.

She gripped the edge of the kitchen counter, closed her eyes, and counted.

"One..."

"Two..."

"Three..."

The pain eased.

Evelyn looked at her carefully.

"That one was stronger."

Khloe nodded.

"I know."

Her phone rang again.

It was Dr. Melissa Grant.

"How far apart are the contractions?"

Khloe checked the timer on her phone.

"About six minutes."

Dr. Grant didn't hesitate.

"It's time."

"I'll have the labor and delivery team waiting."

"We'll leave immediately," Khloe replied.

She ended the call and looked at Harrison, who had just walked through the front door.

He had come by to check on her after the grand jury hearing.

One look at his sister's face told him everything.

"It's today."

Khloe smiled nervously.

"I think she's ready."

Within minutes, the black SUV sped toward St. Andrew's Medical Center.

Harrison sat beside Khloe in the back seat while Evelyn monitored her breathing.

"You remember the classes?" Evelyn asked gently.

Khloe nodded between contractions.

"Breathe in..."

She inhaled.

"And out..."

She exhaled slowly.

Harrison held her hand without saying a word.

She squeezed it so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

He didn't let go.

"You okay?" she whispered during a break between contractions.

He laughed softly.

"I'm not the one having a baby."

"No."

She smiled.

"But you're just as nervous."

He couldn't argue with that.

Dr. Grant met them at the hospital entrance.

"Let's get you upstairs."

Within minutes, Khloe was settled into a private labor suite.

Monitors were attached.

The baby's heartbeat filled the room.

Steady.

Strong.

Beautiful.

Dr. Grant smiled after reviewing the monitor.

"Your little girl is doing great."

Khloe let out a relieved sigh.

"How long?"

The doctor smiled.

"Babies rarely answer that question."

Everyone laughed.

The tension in the room eased.

Across the city, Richard sat inside his attorney's office reviewing the conditions of his release.

His trial date had been set.

Travel restrictions.

Weekly reporting requirements.

Frozen assets.

Every page reminded him that the life he once controlled was gone.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

Khloe has gone into labor.

Richard stared at the screen.

His heart pounded.

Without thinking, he stood.

"I have to go."

His attorney looked up.

"Where?"

"My daughter's being born."

The attorney stood as well.

"Richard."

"You are under court supervision."

"I don't care."

"You should."

"If you violate the conditions—"

Richard interrupted quietly.

"I've already missed too much."

An hour later, Richard arrived at the hospital.

He didn't try to force his way inside.

He simply approached the reception desk.

"My wife..."

He corrected himself.

"Khloe."

"She's having our baby."

The receptionist checked the computer.

"I'm sorry, sir."

"There are no visitors authorized for that patient."

Richard nodded.

"I understand."

"Could you just..."

He struggled to finish the sentence.

"Tell her I'm here."

The receptionist looked sympathetic.

"I'll ask."

Upstairs, a nurse quietly entered Khloe's room.

"There's someone downstairs."

Khloe already knew.

"Richard?"

The nurse nodded.

"He asked us to tell you he's here."

The room became silent.

Harrison watched his sister carefully.

"You don't have to answer."

Khloe looked toward the window.

After a long pause, she spoke.

"He shouldn't be alone today."

Harrison frowned.

"Khloe..."

"I'm not inviting him into the delivery room."

She shook her head.

"But..."

She looked at her brother.

"Our daughter deserves to know that her father wanted to be here."

Harrison studied her face.

Then nodded.

"I'll handle it."

Ten minutes later, Harrison walked into the hospital lobby.

Richard stood immediately.

"Is she okay?"

"Yes."

"The baby?"

"Healthy."

Relief washed over Richard's face.

"Can I see her?"

Harrison remained calm.

"No."

Richard lowered his head.

"I understand."

Harrison reached into his pocket.

Then handed Richard a blue hospital visitor bracelet.

Richard stared at it in confusion.

"What is this?"

"You may wait in the family room."

Richard looked up in disbelief.

"Khloe agreed?"

"She said something."

"What?"

Harrison answered quietly.

"She said your daughter deserves to know you showed up."

Richard's eyes filled with tears.

He couldn't speak.

He simply nodded.

"Thank you."

Harrison's expression softened—just slightly.

"Don't thank me."

"Thank my sister."

The hours passed slowly.

Khloe's contractions grew stronger.

Dr. Grant checked her again.

"You're almost there."

Khloe gripped the bedrail.

"I don't think I can do this."

Dr. Grant smiled confidently.

"Yes, you can."

"You already are."

Evelyn wiped the sweat from Khloe's forehead.

Harrison stood quietly near the window, giving his sister every bit of encouragement she needed.

"You've got this," he said softly.

"You are the strongest person I know."

Khloe looked at him.

"I don't feel strong."

"You don't have to."

"You just have to keep going."

Downstairs, Richard sat alone in the family waiting room.

Every cry from a newborn somewhere in the hospital made him look toward the hallway.

He wasn't allowed upstairs.

He accepted that.

For the first time in years, he understood that some privileges had to be earned.

Not demanded.

A young father sat beside him holding a bouquet of pink roses.

"First baby?" the man asked.

Richard smiled sadly.

"Yes."

The man grinned.

"Best day of your life."

Richard looked toward the elevator.

"I hope so."

At 8:43 that evening, the room suddenly became very busy.

"One more push, Khloe!"

Dr. Grant encouraged.

"You can do this!"

Khloe cried out with every ounce of strength she had left.

Then...

A tiny cry filled the room.

Clear.

Loud.

Perfect.

Everyone froze for a brief second.

Then smiles spread across every face.

Dr. Grant carefully lifted the newborn into the air.

"It's a beautiful baby girl."

Khloe burst into tears.

"My baby..."

The nurse gently placed the tiny infant against her mother's chest.

The little girl immediately quieted.

Her tiny fingers wrapped around Khloe's index finger.

Khloe looked into her daughter's eyes.

"Hi, sweetheart."

"I've been waiting for you."

Harrison quietly turned toward the window.

He smiled as tears rolled down his own face.

For all his strength...

For all his victories in court...

Nothing compared to this moment.

A few minutes later, a nurse walked into the waiting room.

She smiled warmly.

"Mr. Harrington?"

Richard stood so quickly that his chair tipped backward.

"Yes?"

She smiled again.

"Congratulations."

"You have a healthy baby daughter."

Richard closed his eyes.

A tear escaped before he could stop it.

"Thank God."

The nurse handed him a small card.

It contained only three words written in Khloe's handwriting.

She's beautiful. — Khloe

Richard held the note carefully, as though it were made of glass.

For the first time in many months...

He smiled.

Not because his problems were over.

Not because his future was certain.

But because somewhere upstairs...

His daughter had taken her very first breath.

And in that single moment...

May you like

She reminded everyone that even after the darkest storms...

Life could begin again.
