Chapter 5 — The Woman Behind the Lies

Chapter 5 — The Woman Behind the Lies

Three days after the asset freeze, the phones at Harrington Commercial Group never stopped ringing.

Investors demanded answers.

Banks requested emergency meetings.

Reporters gathered outside the company's headquarters before sunrise.

By noon, the company's stock had fallen another eleven percent.

Inside the executive conference room, Richard Harrington sat at the head of the table, surrounded by lawyers, accountants, and board members.

No one spoke.

Finally, the chairman broke the silence.

"We need the truth."

Richard folded his hands.

"You have it."

"No," the chairman replied. "We have excuses."

He slid another folder across the table.

"Our outside auditors discovered twenty-seven unauthorized transfers."

Richard's jaw tightened.

"They were legitimate business expenses."

"Were they?"

The chairman opened the folder.

"The money financed luxury villas."

"Private jets."

"Jewelry."

"And a penthouse purchased under a shell corporation."

Richard remained silent.

Another board member spoke.

"Can you honestly tell us those were company expenses?"

Richard couldn't answer.

The silence answered for him.

At the lakeside estate, Khloe had begun attending weekly prenatal appointments with Dr. Melissa Grant, a highly respected obstetrician Harrison trusted.

After the examination, Dr. Grant smiled warmly.

"Your daughter looks wonderful."

Khloe let out a relieved breath.

"Really?"

"Strong heartbeat."

"Healthy lungs."

"Everything looks exactly as it should."

Tears gathered in Khloe's eyes.

She hadn't realized how much fear she had been carrying.

Dr. Grant handed her the latest ultrasound photo.

"Would you like to know how much hair she has?"

Khloe laughed through her tears.

"She has hair?"

"A lot of it."

Khloe gently held the picture against her chest.

For the first time in weeks, she allowed herself to imagine the future instead of fearing it.

Meanwhile, Harrison received an unexpected visitor.

Detective Laura Bennett arrived carrying a sealed evidence box.

"I think you'll want to see this."

She placed it on his desk.

"What's inside?"

"A witness."

Harrison raised an eyebrow.

Laura opened the box.

Instead of documents, it contained a voice recorder.

"We interviewed someone this morning."

"Who?"

"Vanessa Kensington's former assistant."

Harrison pressed Play.

A nervous female voice filled the room.

"Ms. Kensington often bragged that Mrs. Harrington would never discover the affair."

Another pause.

"She said Richard's wife was too trusting."

Another recording followed.

"She also said if the pregnancy ended badly, Richard would finally be free."

Harrison stopped the recording.

The room became deathly quiet.

His assistant looked horrified.

"She actually said that?"

Laura nodded.

"The witness signed a sworn affidavit."

Harrison carefully closed the evidence box.

"This changes everything."

That same afternoon, Vanessa arrived at the luxury spa she visited every Friday.

She expected another relaxing afternoon.

Instead, conversations stopped as she entered.

Women whispered.

One quietly turned away.

Another stared openly.

Vanessa frowned.

"What?"

Her phone vibrated.

She opened a news alert.

LOCAL DEVELOPER UNDER FINANCIAL INVESTIGATION

Below the headline was a photograph.

Richard.

Standing beside her.

The article didn't accuse her of a crime.

But her face was now everywhere.

She quickly lowered her phone.

For the first time, embarrassment replaced confidence.

Back at Harrington Commercial, Richard stormed into his attorney's office.

"I want this stopped."

The attorney sighed.

"I've told you already."

"Harrison isn't leaking information."

"Then how do reporters know?"

"Public filings."

"What about the banks?"

"They're reacting to the investigation."

Richard slammed both hands on the desk.

"There has to be something we can do."

"There is."

Richard looked up hopefully.

The attorney spoke carefully.

"Tell the truth."

Richard stared at him in disbelief.

"You can't be serious."

"I've never been more serious."

That evening, Harrison drove to the lakeside estate carrying takeout from Khloe's favorite Italian restaurant.

She smiled when she saw him.

"You remembered."

"You've always loved their chicken parmesan."

They sat together on the back porch overlooking the water.

For a while, neither of them spoke.

Finally, Khloe asked,

"Do you ever get tired?"

Harrison smiled.

"Every day."

"So why keep fighting?"

He looked toward the lake.

"When Mom died..."

Khloe lowered her eyes.

"I promised her something."

She looked at him.

"I promised I'd always protect you."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"You were only eighteen."

"I meant it."

"You've spent your whole life keeping that promise."

Harrison shrugged.

"I intend to keep it."

Khloe reached across the table and squeezed his hand.

"I don't know what I would've done without you."

"You'll never have to find out."

Across the city, Richard returned to the mansion once again.

The silence inside felt unbearable.

As he walked into the kitchen, he noticed something on the refrigerator.

A calendar.

Khloe's handwriting covered nearly every date.

Doctor's appointments.

Baby classes.

Nursery shopping.

Every event had been planned around one simple hope.

A family.

Richard slowly removed the calendar.

On the back was a folded piece of paper.

He recognized it immediately.

A letter.

Addressed to him.

He unfolded it carefully.

It had been written months earlier.

Dear Richard,

If you're reading this before our daughter is born, it means I finally worked up the courage to give you this letter.

I know becoming parents is scary, but I believe we're going to be wonderful together.

I already imagine you teaching her how to ride a bike, helping with homework, and embarrassing her at school events because you'll be such a proud dad.

I can't wait to watch you fall in love with her.

Love always,
Khloe

Richard read the letter twice.

Then a third time.

By the fourth, the paper had become damp with tears.

He finally understood something that no business deal had ever taught him.

Success meant nothing if there was no one left to share it with.

Across town, Vanessa sat alone inside the penthouse.

She called Richard.

No answer.

Again.

Voicemail.

She frowned.

Then her own phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered cautiously.

"Hello?"

A calm female voice replied.

"Ms. Kensington?"

"Yes."

"This is Detective Laura Bennett with the Pennsylvania Financial Crimes Unit."

Vanessa's face lost all color.

"We'd like you to come in tomorrow morning."

"For what?"

"To answer a few questions regarding an ongoing investigation."

Vanessa swallowed hard.

"Am... am I under arrest?"

"Not at this time."

The detective paused.

"But I strongly recommend you don't leave the state."

The call ended.

Vanessa slowly lowered her phone.

For the first time since the affair began...

She felt genuine fear.

Miles away, Harrison stood on the dock beneath a sky filled with stars.

His assistant called with one final update.

"The witness is cooperating."

"Good."

"And Detective Bennett thinks Vanessa may turn on Richard."

Harrison looked across the calm water.

"I don't need her to."

"Why not?"

"Because the evidence already speaks for itself."

He ended the call.

Inside the house, Khloe was asleep with one hand resting gently over her unborn daughter.

Outside, the wind rustled through the pine trees.

The storm surrounding the Harrington empire was growing stronger.

And before long...

Someone would decide that saving themselves was worth betraying everyone else.
