Chapter 4 — The First Crack

Chapter 4 — The First Crack
Richard Harrington stared at the subpoena until the words blurred together.
All financial assets of Harrington Commercial Group are subject to judicial review pending investigation.
His hands trembled.
This wasn't supposed to happen.
He had prepared for an emotional divorce.
He had prepared for angry accusations.
He had even prepared for a costly settlement.

But he had never prepared to fight Harrison Cole.
His phone rang again.
This time, it was the chairman of the board.
Richard took a slow breath before answering.
"Richard."
The chairman's voice was unusually cold.
"Be in the boardroom in thirty minutes."
"I have another meeting."
"No."
"You have this meeting."
The line went dead.
Thirty-five minutes later, twelve board members sat around the polished walnut table overlooking downtown Philadelphia.
No one smiled when Richard entered.
The atmosphere felt heavy.
The chairman folded his hands.
"We've received inquiries from three banks."
Richard remained standing.
"They're routine."
"No."
The chairman slid several documents across the table.
"They're asking whether company funds were transferred into shell corporations under your authorization."
Richard glanced at the papers.
"I can explain."
"We hope you can."
Another board member spoke.
"Our stock has already dropped six percent this morning."
A third added quietly,
"Investors are asking questions we can't answer."
Richard felt every eye in the room fixed on him.
For years, he had been the most powerful man at the table.
Today...
He looked like the defendant.
At the lakeside estate, Khloe spent the morning planting flowers outside the porch.
Evelyn watched from a nearby bench.
"You should be resting."
"I need something normal."
Khloe carefully placed another white daisy into the soil.
"I spent months pretending my marriage was normal."
She smiled sadly.
"I don't want to pretend anymore."
Evelyn nodded.
"You know what I see?"
"What?"
"A woman who finally stopped carrying someone else's mistakes."
Khloe looked down at her belly.
The baby kicked.
A soft, reassuring movement.
She laughed quietly.
"I think she likes the fresh air."
Back in Manhattan, Harrison met with Assistant District Attorney Daniel Brooks.
Stacks of evidence covered the conference table.
Brooks looked exhausted.
"I've prosecuted organized crime."
"I've prosecuted political corruption."
"But I've never seen a divorce case turn into this."
Harrison calmly sipped his coffee.
"It stopped being a divorce weeks ago."
Brooks picked up another file.
"We've confirmed tax fraud."
He opened another.
"Money laundering."
Another.
"Forgery."
Another.
"Wire fraud."
He looked at Harrison.
"Was Richard always this reckless?"
"No."
"He became arrogant."
Brooks nodded.
"Sometimes that's worse."
Across town, Vanessa walked into Harrington Commercial headquarters carrying lunch for Richard.
The receptionist forced an awkward smile.
"Good afternoon, Ms. Kensington."
Vanessa noticed people whispering.
Employees stopped talking as she passed.
Some avoided looking at her altogether.
Inside Richard's office, she placed the food on his desk.
"Long morning?"
Richard didn't answer.
He was reading another legal notice.
"What now?"
"The board hired outside auditors."
Vanessa frowned.
"So?"
"They don't trust me anymore."
She laughed nervously.
"They're just protecting themselves."
Richard slowly looked up.
"No."
"They're protecting themselves from me."
His words hung heavily in the room.
For the first time, Vanessa realized this wasn't just a temporary problem.
Everything they had planned was beginning to collapse.
Late that afternoon, Harrison's private investigator arrived with another envelope.
"I found something."
Harrison opened it.
Inside were surveillance photos taken nearly three years earlier.
Richard.
Vanessa.
A private fertility clinic.
Several appointments.
Medical records confirmed the dates.
Harrison studied the documents carefully.
His expression hardened.
His assistant noticed immediately.
"What is it?"
He slid the papers toward her.
"They lied."
She read the file.
Then looked up in shock.
"Vanessa knew Khloe was trying IVF?"
Harrison nodded.
"She knew everything."
The dates told a heartbreaking story.
On the very same mornings Khloe had been receiving fertility treatments...
Richard had been driving Vanessa to prenatal consultations after she suffered an earlier miscarriage.
He hadn't been working late.
He had been building another life.
That evening, Khloe sat in the nursery rocking gently in the white chair Harrison had bought years ago.
She held one of the tiny baby blankets against her chest.
There was a knock at the door.
Harrison stepped inside.
"You okay?"
She nodded.
"I've been thinking."
"About Richard?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"About me."
He pulled another chair beside her.
"I wasted six years."
"No."
"I did."
"I kept trying to save someone who never wanted to save us."
Harrison looked at his little sister.
"You loved your husband."
"I loved the man I believed he was."
A tear slid down her cheek.
"I don't even know if that man ever existed."
Harrison didn't answer.
Because he wasn't sure either.
Across the city, Richard returned to the mansion after sunset.
It felt emptier than ever.
He wandered into the unfinished nursery.
Half-painted walls.
An unopened crib still inside its cardboard box.
A rocking chair covered with a protective sheet.
He slowly sat down.
His eyes landed on a handwritten note taped inside one of the drawers.
Khloe's handwriting.
For our little girl...
Daddy promised he'll read you bedtime stories every night.
Richard closed his eyes.
For the first time in years...
He cried.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just silent tears falling into an empty room.
His grief lasted less than five minutes.
His phone rang.
It was his corporate attorney.
Richard answered immediately.
"What happened?"
The attorney sounded breathless.
"The judge approved Harrison Cole's emergency motion."
Richard's heart sank.
"What motion?"
"The court froze your personal accounts."
"My what?"
"Everything."
"Checking."
"Savings."
"Investment portfolios."
"Even your executive bonus account."
Richard stood so quickly the rocking chair tipped over.
"They can't do that."
"They already did."
"What about the offshore accounts?"
There was a long silence.
Then the attorney quietly replied,
"They've frozen those too."
Richard felt the room spinning around him.
The fortune he had spent two years hiding...
Had disappeared in a single afternoon.
At that exact moment, Harrison stood on the porch overlooking the quiet lake.
His phone buzzed with a secure notification.
Asset freeze completed successfully.
He smiled for the first time in days.
Behind him, Khloe stepped outside.
"The stars are beautiful tonight."
"They are."
She wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.
"Do you think this will be over soon?"
Harrison looked at the sky before answering.
"No."
"This is only the beginning."
Far away, Richard Harrington stood alone in the dark nursery of the mansion he might soon lose.
For the first time in his life...
May you like
He understood what it felt like to have everything taken away.
And Harrison Cole had not yet presented his strongest evidence.
