Chapter 2 — The Trap Begins to Close

Chapter 2 — The Trap Begins to Close
Richard Harrington didn't panic easily.
For twenty years, he had built his reputation by staying calm while competitors fell apart around him. Markets crashed. Projects failed. Investors threatened lawsuits.
Richard always found a way out.
So when his chief financial officer finally returned his call that afternoon, he expected a simple explanation.
Instead, he got bad news.

"I've been contacted by federal banking compliance," the CFO said quietly.
Richard frowned.
"About what?"
"The overseas transfers."
His stomach tightened.
"What did you tell them?"
"Nothing. I told them every transaction required your approval."
Richard stood from his leather chair and walked toward the window.
"They're fishing."
"I don't think so."
"What do you mean?"
"They already know more than they're supposed to."
Silence filled the office.
Richard slowly lowered the phone.
Someone was looking into his finances.
That wasn't supposed to happen.
Across the state line, Harrison Cole was already three moves ahead.
He sat in a conference room surrounded by specialists.
A forensic accountant.
A cybercrime investigator.
A retired FBI financial analyst.
A divorce attorney licensed in Pennsylvania.
Stacks of files covered the polished table.
Harrison looked at the accountant.
"How much?"
The man adjusted his glasses.
"So far?"
"Yes."
"We've confirmed forty-three million dollars hidden through shell companies."
The room remained quiet.
"And we're still tracing the rest."
The cyber investigator slid another folder across the table.
"We recovered deleted emails."
Harrison opened it.
Inside were dozens of conversations between Richard and Vanessa.
Some discussed luxury vacations.
Others discussed transferring money.
One message caught everyone's attention.
Once she's divorced, everything becomes ours.
Another followed.
If the baby complicates things, we'll deal with it.
Harrison closed the folder without saying a word.
The room suddenly felt colder.
Meanwhile, Khloe woke to birds singing outside the lakeside estate.
For the first time in months, she had slept through the night.
No arguments.
No waiting for Richard to come home.
No pretending everything was fine.
She stepped onto the porch wrapped in a light sweater.
The lake shimmered beneath the morning sun.
It looked peaceful.
Almost healing.
Evelyn joined her carrying two mugs of tea.
"You slept well."
"I forgot what peace feels like."
The older woman smiled.
"Your baby needed this."
Khloe gently rubbed her stomach.
The baby kicked.
A tiny movement.
Small.
Gentle.
Perfect.
Tears filled her eyes again.
"She's okay."
"She's stronger than you think."
Khloe smiled for the first time in weeks.
Back in Philadelphia, Vanessa Kensington wasn't nearly as calm.
She sat across from Richard inside his office.
"You look nervous."
"I'm not."
"You've checked your phone every three minutes."
Richard didn't answer.
She crossed her arms.
"Did your wife finally figure it out?"
"No."
"Then what's wrong?"
He hesitated.
"The banks are asking questions."
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"So?"
"They've never asked before."
"They're bankers."
"They ask questions."
Richard looked at her.
"You don't understand."
"No, Richard."
"I understand perfectly."
She leaned closer.
"We've planned this for two years."
"In another month, your wife signs the divorce papers."
"Our baby is born."
"We get married."
"Everyone moves on."
Richard wanted to believe her.
But something deep inside him refused to settle.
At noon, Harrison received another report.
His assistant smiled.
"The investigator found something interesting."
She handed him several photographs.
Richard and Vanessa entering the same penthouse.
Leaving together the next morning.
Holding hands in an underground parking garage.
Kissing inside a private elevator.
Timestamp after timestamp.
Date after date.
The affair was undeniable.
Then another envelope arrived.
Medical records.
Vanessa Kensington.
Eight weeks pregnant.
Harrison quietly closed the file.
"So."
He spoke almost to himself.
"They're both expecting children."
His assistant looked up.
"What now?"
He smiled slightly.
"Now we let them keep lying."
That afternoon, Richard drove home expecting to find Khloe waiting.
Instead...
The mansion was silent.
He called out.
"Khloe?"
Nothing.
He walked upstairs.
Their bedroom closet.
Half empty.
The nursery.
Empty.
The guest room.
Empty.
He frowned and reached for his phone.
One call.
Straight to voicemail.
Another.
Voicemail.
A third.
Nothing.
His heartbeat quickened.
He called the house manager.
"When did Mrs. Harrington leave?"
"This morning, sir."
"Where did she go?"
"I don't know."
"Did she say anything?"
"No, sir."
Richard slowly lowered the phone.
For the first time...
He realized Khloe hadn't cried.
She hadn't begged.
She hadn't confronted him.
She had simply disappeared.
An hour later, he stormed into Vanessa's apartment.
"She's gone."
Vanessa blinked.
"What?"
"Khloe."
"I can't find her."
She shrugged.
"So?"
"So?"
Richard stared at her.
"She's eight months pregnant."
Vanessa laughed softly.
"Maybe she's staying with family."
Richard froze.
Family.
Harrison.
His face lost all color.
Vanessa noticed immediately.
"What?"
He looked at her.
"If she's with Harrison..."
She frowned.
"The lawyer?"
Richard didn't answer.
Instead, he grabbed his keys.
Vanessa followed him.
"Richard."
"What?"
"You're scaring me."
He looked her directly in the eyes.
"For the first time..."
"...I'm scared too."
That evening, Harrison received exactly the phone call he had expected.
"Mr. Cole."
"This is Richard Harrington."
"I'd like to speak with my wife."
Harrison calmly leaned back in his chair.
"I don't know where your wife is."
"You know exactly where she is."
"I represent many clients."
"Don't play games."
"I'm not."
Richard's voice hardened.
"This is a private family matter."
Harrison's tone never changed.
"No."
"It's now a legal matter."
Silence.
Richard finally spoke.
"What do you want?"
Harrison glanced at the mountain of evidence covering his desk.
"I haven't decided yet."
"You can't keep my wife away from me."
"I haven't kept anyone from you."
Another long silence.
Then Harrison quietly added,
"But if Khloe chooses never to see you again..."
"...there isn't a judge in Pennsylvania who can force her to."
Click.
The line went dead.
Richard stared at his phone.
His hands were shaking.
For the first time in his career...
He had entered a negotiation without any leverage.
And Harrison Cole had just made sure he knew it.
Miles away, Khloe sat beside the lake, one hand resting on her belly as the sun disappeared behind the trees.
She had no idea the war had officially begun.
May you like
But Harrison did.
And he had only made his opening move.
