Chapter 3 — A Dangerous Discovery

Chapter 3 — A Dangerous Discovery
The next morning, Richard Harrington walked into his office before sunrise.
He hadn't slept.
Every unanswered call from Khloe echoed in his mind.
Every conversation with Harrison replayed over and over.
For the first time in years, he felt something unfamiliar.
He wasn't in control.
He unlocked the hidden drawer beneath his desk and removed a silver flash drive.
Inside were backup records of every offshore transfer, every shell company, and every private agreement that no one was ever supposed to find.

He inserted the drive into his computer.
Nothing.
He frowned.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
His IT director entered moments later.
"Good morning, sir."
Richard looked up.
"This drive won't open."
The man examined it.
"It's been remotely wiped."
Richard's face turned pale.
"That's impossible."
"Not if someone accessed the server before the backup was made."
Richard slowly sat down.
Someone had reached his files.
Someone who knew exactly where to look.
At the lakeside estate, Khloe sat in the nursery folding tiny baby clothes.
The room smelled of fresh paint and lavender.
For the first time in months, she allowed herself to imagine holding her daughter.
She smiled as she folded a small pink blanket.
Then her phone vibrated.
Unknown Number.
She hesitated before answering.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then a familiar voice.
"Khloe..."
Richard.
She immediately stiffened.
"I've been worried sick."
She didn't answer.
"Please... just tell me you're okay."
"I'm safe."
Relief flooded his voice.
"Thank God."
"I've been looking everywhere."
She looked out the nursery window.
"You didn't notice I was disappearing while I lived in the same house."
Another long silence.
"Khloe..."
"I know about Vanessa."
His breathing stopped.
"I know about the money."
Silence.
"I know about everything."
Still silence.
When Richard finally spoke, his voice had changed.
"It's not what you think."
A tear rolled down Khloe's cheek.
"I used to believe that."
She ended the call.
Then calmly blocked his number.
She placed the phone on the dresser and gently rested both hands on her belly.
"No more lies."
Hundreds of miles away, Harrison smiled as another report arrived.
His cybersecurity team had successfully traced every offshore account.
Not only Richard's.
Three additional executives from Harrington Commercial Group had participated in the transfers.
One accountant.
One corporate attorney.
One investment consultant.
The fraud was larger than anyone expected.
His assistant looked up.
"This isn't just a divorce anymore."
Harrison nodded.
"No."
"It's organized financial fraud."
He picked up another folder.
"And now..."
"...it belongs to federal investigators."
Vanessa Kensington spent the afternoon shopping for baby furniture.
She walked through an expensive boutique imagining the nursery she and Richard would soon decorate.
Cream-colored walls.
Italian furniture.
Designer wallpaper.
Their perfect future.
Her phone buzzed.
Richard.
She answered immediately.
"Did you find her?"
"No."
His voice sounded strained.
"Something's wrong."
"What now?"
"My files are disappearing."
She laughed.
"Richard, you're acting paranoid."
"I'm serious."
"Someone is inside my business."
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"You think Harrison did it?"
"I don't know."
"But someone is tearing my company apart."
She looked at the crib she had been admiring.
"Then fix it."
He didn't answer.
Instead, he quietly ended the call.
For the first time, Vanessa felt a small knot of uneasiness.
Late that afternoon, Harrison drove to the lakeside estate.
Khloe met him on the porch.
"You look tired."
He smiled faintly.
"I've had worse weeks."
She noticed the thick stack of files under his arm.
"More evidence?"
"Much more."
Inside the living room, Harrison spread dozens of documents across the coffee table.
Bank transfers.
Property deeds.
Corporate filings.
Medical records.
Photographs.
Khloe slowly covered her mouth.
"There are so many."
"There are hundreds."
He looked at her gently.
"I need to ask you something."
She nodded.
"Did Richard ever pressure you to sign financial documents?"
She thought for a moment.
"Yes."
"Several."
"Did you read them?"
"Most of them."
"Were there any you signed without reading?"
Her expression changed.
"There was one."
"When?"
"What was it?"
"He said it was refinancing paperwork."
Harrison became very still.
"Do you remember where?"
"The dining room."
"After dinner."
"He was in a hurry because he had a flight."
Harrison immediately pulled a folder from his briefcase.
"Was it this?"
Khloe stared at the signature page.
Her blood ran cold.
"Yes."
She looked up.
"Oh my God..."
"This isn't refinancing."
Harrison nodded.
"No."
"It transferred ownership of three investment properties into a holding company."
"I never knew."
"I know."
She looked horrified.
"Does that make me responsible?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because fraud requires informed consent."
He closed the folder.
"You were deceived."
That evening, Harrison stepped outside to answer a call.
It was Detective Laura Bennett from the Financial Crimes Unit.
"We received your evidence."
"Good."
"The district attorney has questions."
"Expected."
"There may be enough here for criminal charges."
Harrison looked toward the quiet lake.
"I wasn't aiming for criminal charges."
"You weren't?"
"No."
"I was aiming for convictions."
Meanwhile, Richard sat alone inside the empty mansion.
Every room felt colder.
The nursery remained unfinished.
Khloe's favorite coffee mug still sat beside the kitchen sink.
He picked it up.
For reasons he couldn't explain, guilt slowly crept into his heart.
He remembered the day she surprised him with the pregnancy test.
Her smile.
Her tears.
Her hope.
He had barely looked at her.
His phone buzzed.
Vanessa.
He ignored it.
Another buzz.
His assistant.
Ignored.
Then another.
His chief legal officer.
He answered.
"What?"
The man sounded terrified.
"Richard..."
"What now?"
"We've just been served."
Richard froze.
"Served with what?"
"A subpoena."
His grip tightened.
"Who filed it?"
The answer came like a hammer.
"Harrison Cole."
At nearly the same moment, Harrison stood on the lakeside dock watching the sun disappear beneath the horizon.
His phone vibrated.
A single text message appeared from the process server.
Subpoena delivered.
Richard Harrington accepted service personally.
Harrison slipped the phone back into his pocket.
Behind him, Khloe stepped onto the dock wrapped in a blanket.
"Everything okay?"
He smiled.
"Yes."
She looked at the peaceful water.
"It doesn't feel like we're fighting anyone."
Harrison gently placed a hand on her shoulder.
"The best battles..."
"...are the ones your opponent doesn't realize they've already lost."
Far away in Philadelphia, Richard unfolded the subpoena with trembling hands.
For the first time, he saw Harrison Cole's name printed across an official court filing.
And beneath it was a sentence that made his heart stop.
All financial assets of Harrington Commercial Group are now subject to judicial review pending investigation.
Richard whispered to himself,
"What have I done?"
He still didn't know.

The divorce he had planned to control was no longer a divorce.
It had become the biggest legal nightmare of his life.
