Chapter 1 — Harrison Makes the First Move

Chapter 1 — Harrison Makes the First Move
"What am I supposed to do?"
Khloe's voice barely rose above a whisper.
She sat across from her brother with both hands wrapped protectively around her swollen stomach. Her wedding ring suddenly felt heavier than it ever had before, as if the tiny diamond carried the weight of six years built on lies.
Outside Harrison Cole's Manhattan office, the city continued as though nothing had happened. Taxi horns echoed through the streets. Office lights glowed across the skyline. Somewhere below, people laughed over dinner.
Inside the office, silence ruled.

Harrison looked at his sister for a long moment before sliding every document into a thick black folder.
"You don't do anything," he said calmly.
Khloe frowned.
"I do everything."
She shook her head.
"I can't just disappear."
"You can."
"He'll know."
"I want him to know."
She stared at him.
Harrison leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable.
"For almost two years, Richard has been building a plan to destroy your life. He's hidden money, falsified financial records, transferred marital assets, and documented everything to make you look financially dependent."
Khloe swallowed hard.
"You already figured all of that out?"
"I figured it out in twenty-three minutes."
His voice never changed.
"He's smart."
A brief pause followed.
"But he isn't smarter than I am."
Khloe managed a weak smile for the first time that evening.
Harry had always sounded like that.
Calm.
Certain.
Dangerously confident.
As children, he had been the older brother who silently stood between her and every school bully.
As an adult, he became the attorney corporations feared receiving letters from.
When Harrison promised something, he delivered.
Always.
He stood and walked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Manhattan.
"I've already contacted a forensic accounting team."
Khloe blinked.
"You... already?"
"I called them while you were crying."
She lowered her eyes.
"I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize."
He turned toward her.
"You've spent six years apologizing for things that were never your fault."
His words hit harder than she expected.
Tears filled her eyes again.
"I should've seen it."
"No."
"I ignored the signs."
"No."
"I kept believing he'd change."
Harrison slowly walked back to his desk.
"That's what good people do."
He gently placed a glass of water in front of her.
"They believe promises."
She looked away.
"Evil people count on that."
The next morning, Richard Harrington woke believing he was still in complete control.
He kissed Vanessa Kensington goodbye inside the penthouse overlooking downtown Philadelphia.
"I'll handle everything today."
Vanessa smiled as she adjusted the silk robe around her shoulders.
"What about your wife?"
Richard laughed.
"She still thinks we're fixing our marriage."
Vanessa wrapped her arms around his neck.
"Poor Khloe."
Richard didn't answer.
Instead, he picked up his phone.
No missed calls.
No angry messages.
No confrontation.
Nothing.
Exactly as expected.
"See?"
he said.
"She'll never fight back."
Vanessa smirked.
"She's too soft."
Neither of them noticed the security camera quietly recording every second they spent together.
Across the street, a licensed private investigator lowered his camera.
He smiled.
"Got you."
He immediately encrypted the footage and uploaded it to Harrison Cole's secure server.
At ten o'clock that morning, Khloe quietly packed a single suitcase.
She didn't take jewelry.
She didn't take designer handbags.
She didn't take expensive dresses.
Only essentials.
Maternity clothes.
Medical records.
Baby clothes she had secretly bought months earlier.
A stuffed white rabbit.
And the tiny pair of cream-colored baby booties she had once planned to give Richard.
She held them for several seconds before placing them back inside the box.
Some dreams deserved to stay buried.
When she walked toward the front door, she stopped.
Six years.
Every room held a memory.
The grand staircase where Richard had carried her over the threshold after their honeymoon.
The dining room where they celebrated anniversaries.
The nursery they had started painting but never finished.
It no longer looked like a home.
It looked like a museum dedicated to a lie.
She quietly closed the front door behind her.
She never looked back.
Three black SUVs waited outside.
Khloe frowned.
"Harry?"
Her brother stepped out of the first vehicle.
"You didn't think I'd let you travel alone."
"Is all this necessary?"
"Yes."
"I'm not in danger."
Harrison looked directly at her.
"You are carrying the single greatest piece of evidence against a man about to lose hundreds of millions of dollars."
Her heart skipped.
"He wouldn't..."
"I don't gamble with your safety."
The rear passenger door opened.
A middle-aged woman smiled warmly.
"My name is Evelyn."
Khloe looked confused.
"I'm a retired labor and delivery nurse."
Harrison nodded.
"She'll stay with you until the baby arrives."
"You hired a nurse?"
"And two security officers."
Khloe stared at him.
"This is insane."
"No."
His expression remained perfectly calm.
"This is preparation."
Meanwhile, Richard arrived at Harrington Commercial Group's headquarters.
His assistant hurried toward him.
"Good morning, sir."
He barely acknowledged her.
"Cancel my afternoon meetings."
"Yes, sir."
"And move tomorrow's conference with the investors."
She hesitated.
"There... may be a problem."
Richard stopped walking.
"What problem?"
"The Wilmington project."
"What about it?"
"The financing bank requested additional documentation."
Richard frowned.
"They've never done that before."
"I know."
"They're also asking questions about three overseas holding companies."
His smile disappeared.
"Who?"
"The compliance department."
Richard felt an unfamiliar knot tighten in his stomach.
"Fine."
"I'll deal with it."
He walked into his private office and shut the door.
Within seconds, he called his chief financial officer.
No answer.
He called again.
Voicemail.
A third time.
Nothing.
For the first time in years, something felt... off.
At exactly 11:42 a.m., Harrison received a secure message.
Target has left the residence.
Three minutes later, another arrived.
Private investigator confirmed mistress relationship with video evidence.
Then another.
Forensic accountants located six additional shell corporations.
Harrison calmly closed the messages.
Everything was unfolding exactly as planned.
His assistant stepped into the office.
"The divorce petition is ready."
"Don't file it."
She looked surprised.
"Not yet?"
"Not yet."
He smiled faintly.
"I want Richard comfortable."
"Comfortable?"
"The farther a man walks onto thin ice..."
He closed the folder containing hundreds of pages of evidence.
"...the louder it cracks."
Late that afternoon, Khloe arrived at a secluded lakeside estate in upstate New York.
The property belonged to Harrison.
Few people even knew it existed.
Tall pine trees surrounded the house.
The lake reflected the fading sunlight like polished glass.
For the first time in months...
She felt safe.
Evelyn gently helped her onto the porch.
"You should rest."
Khloe nodded.
As she stepped inside, she noticed a freshly decorated nursery.
Soft cream walls.
A white crib.
A rocking chair.
Shelves filled with children's books.
Tiny stuffed animals waiting for a baby who hadn't yet arrived.
She covered her mouth.
"You did this?"
Harrison stood quietly behind her.
"I had it prepared three years ago."
Khloe turned slowly.
"What?"
He smiled sadly.
"I kept believing you'd become a mother someday."
She broke down in tears.
For the first time since discovering Richard's betrayal...
She didn't cry because she was heartbroken.
She cried because someone still believed in her.
Outside the cabin, hidden among the trees, two security officers quietly took their positions.
Miles away, Richard Harrington still believed he was hunting his prey.
May you like
He had no idea...
He had already become Harrison Cole's next case.
