Chapter 7 — An Unexpected Emergency

Chapter 7 — An Unexpected Emergency

Two weeks passed.

For the first time in months, Khloe's days were peaceful.

Every morning, she walked along the quiet lakeshore.

Every afternoon, she read books to her unborn daughter.

Every evening, Harrison checked in before returning to his office to prepare for the legal battle ahead.

Life wasn't perfect.

But it was finally safe.

Until Thursday morning.

Khloe was setting the breakfast table when a sharp pain shot through her lower abdomen.

She froze.

The plate slipped from her hands and shattered across the kitchen floor.

Evelyn rushed in immediately.

"Khloe?"

Another pain.

Stronger this time.

Khloe gripped the edge of the counter.

"I... I don't know..."

Her breathing became uneven.

"The baby..."

Evelyn's expression changed instantly.

"Sit down."

Khloe barely made it to the chair before another wave of pain hit.

Evelyn checked her pulse.

Then she looked down.

Her face turned pale.

There was blood.

Only a small amount.

But enough.

She immediately grabbed her phone.

"Harrison."

Harrison answered before the first ring finished.

"Evelyn?"

"It's Khloe."

He was already standing.

"What happened?"

"She's bleeding."

His heart stopped.

"How much?"

"I don't know yet."

"I'm calling an ambulance."

"No."

Harrison's voice became calm.

"I'm coming myself."

He hung up.

Within thirty seconds, he was in his car.

For the first time in years...

He drove faster than the speed limit.

Dr. Melissa Grant was already waiting when Khloe arrived at the hospital.

She examined her immediately.

Ultrasound.

Blood pressure.

Heart monitor.

The room remained silent except for the rhythmic sound of the baby's heartbeat.

Finally, Dr. Grant smiled.

"The baby is fine."

Khloe burst into tears.

"What happened?"

"You've been under a tremendous amount of stress."

She gently squeezed Khloe's hand.

"Your body is telling you to slow down."

Harrison quietly let out the breath he'd been holding.

Dr. Grant looked at both of them.

"I want her admitted overnight for observation."

"No arguments."

Khloe nodded.

"I'll stay."

Word of the hospital visit never appeared in the news.

Harrison made sure of that.

But someone else learned about it anyway.

Richard.

One of the hospital administrators, who had once worked on a Harrington Commercial project, casually mentioned seeing Khloe's name on an admission list.

Richard drove to the hospital without thinking.

When he arrived, two private security officers blocked the entrance to the maternity floor.

"I'm her husband."

One of the guards nodded politely.

"I understand."

"I need to see her."

"I'm sorry."

"You're not authorized."

Richard frowned.

"Authorized by who?"

A familiar voice answered behind him.

"Me."

Richard turned slowly.

Harrison stood at the end of the hallway.

Perfectly composed.

Hands in his coat pockets.

Richard took a step forward.

"Move."

"No."

"I have a right to see my wife."

Harrison remained calm.

"You have no right to disturb a patient under medical observation."

"She's carrying my child."

"And she's also my client."

Richard clenched his fists.

"I just want to know if she's okay."

Harrison studied him carefully.

"For whose benefit?"

Richard didn't answer.

Harrison continued.

"If you're worried about the baby..."

"She has excellent doctors."

"If you're worried about Khloe..."

"You should have thought about that before you betrayed her."

Richard lowered his eyes.

For the first time...

He had no defense.

Inside her hospital room, Khloe stared out the window.

She hadn't been told Richard was downstairs.

Harrison chose not to upset her.

Instead, he sat beside her bed reading legal documents.

She smiled weakly.

"You never stop working."

He looked up.

"I stop when you're safe."

She reached over and touched his hand.

"I scared you today."

He didn't answer immediately.

Finally, he admitted,

"More than you'll ever know."

She looked at him with soft eyes.

"You've always protected me."

"I couldn't protect Mom."

The words escaped before he realized he had spoken them.

Silence filled the room.

Khloe slowly squeezed his hand.

"You were eighteen."

"I know."

"You weren't supposed to save everyone."

He looked away.

"But I promised."

Khloe smiled sadly.

"You've already kept that promise."

Across town, Vanessa sat alone in the penthouse watching the evening news.

Every channel seemed to mention Harrington Commercial.

Falling stock prices.

Federal investigations.

Executive resignations.

She muted the television.

Her phone buzzed.

It was Richard.

She answered.

"Where are you?"

"Driving."

"Did you find Khloe?"

A long silence.

"Yes."

Vanessa sat upright.

"You saw her?"

"No."

"Harrison wouldn't let me."

She laughed bitterly.

"So now her brother decides everything?"

"No."

Richard quietly replied.

"I decided everything the day I betrayed her."

Vanessa was stunned.

It was the first time Richard had ever admitted it out loud.

The following morning, Detective Laura Bennett visited Harrison at the hospital cafeteria.

She carried another folder.

"We've got a problem."

Harrison looked up.

"What kind?"

"One of Richard's overseas partners disappeared last night."

"Ran?"

"We think so."

She placed a passport photo on the table.

"He was scheduled to testify next week."

Harrison studied the picture.

"Did Richard help him?"

"We don't know."

"But we're checking."

Harrison nodded slowly.

"This just became more dangerous."

That afternoon, Khloe was discharged.

Before leaving, Dr. Grant gave her strict instructions.

"No stress."

"No travel."

"Lots of rest."

Khloe smiled.

"I'll try."

"You'll do more than try."

Dr. Grant looked directly at Harrison.

"And you'll make sure she listens."

"I will."

As they walked toward the parking garage, Khloe noticed a little girl holding her father's hand nearby.

The child couldn't have been older than four.

She looked up at her father and laughed.

The man lifted her into his arms.

Khloe quietly watched them disappear.

Then she whispered,

"I hope our daughter laughs like that."

Harrison smiled.

"I think she will."

Late that evening, Richard sat alone inside the unfinished nursery once again.

He picked up the tiny stuffed rabbit Khloe had left behind.

The one she had bought months earlier.

He imagined a little girl sleeping in the crib.

He imagined bedtime stories.

Birthday parties.

First days of school.

Everything he had thrown away.

His phone suddenly buzzed.

A text message from his attorney.

Emergency hearing scheduled for Monday.

Judge personally requested your appearance.

Richard read the message twice.

Then a third time.

He knew exactly who had requested that hearing.

Harrison.

Outside, rain began falling against the nursery window.

Richard looked down at the stuffed rabbit still resting in his hands.

For the first time...

He wasn't afraid of losing his company.

He was afraid he had already lost something far more valuable.

And unlike money...

Some things could never be earned back.
