Chapter 7: Midnight Confessions

The neon lights of the downtown precinct cast long, garish shadows across the interrogation room. Julian Howard sat hunched over the metal table, his designer suit wrinkled, his hair disheveled. He looked twenty years older than he had twenty-four hours ago.

The door swung open, and Detective Ruiz walked in, tossing a thick manila folder onto the table with a loud thud.

Julian flinched, looking up with bloodshot, desperate eyes. "I want my lawyer. You can't hold me without a lawyer present."

"Your lawyer dropped you fifteen minutes ago, Mr. Howard," Ruiz said smoothly, pulling out a chair and sitting down opposite him. "Turns out, when a firm realizes their client is broke, facing federal fraud charges, and tied to an attempted murder conspiracy, retention checks tend to bounce."

Julian swallowed hard, his throat dry. "I... I want to make a deal. I didn't push Elena. That was Vanessa. Vanessa planned the whole thing! I just went along with it because... because we were desperate!"

"Desperate for what, Julian? Your wife's money?" Ruiz leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. "Let's talk about your father-in-law's company. Let's talk about the offshore shell accounts in the Cayman Islands that magically appeared right after your wedding."

Julian's eyes widened in sheer terror. "I... I don't know what you're talking about."

"Don't insult my intelligence," Ruiz snapped, sliding a printed bank statement across the table. "Three million dollars skimmed from the tech development fund over four years. Transferred directly to an account controlled by a man named Arthur Vance."

Julian stared at the paper as if it were venomous. The name Arthur Vance sent a visible shudder through his frame.

"Arthur isn't just a random name, is he?" Ruiz pressed. "He's Vanessa's uncle. Or wait... is he something more than that? Tell me about your mother's relationship with Arthur, Julian. Because it looks to me like this whole marriage wasn't an accident. It was a coordinated corporate takeover."

Julian opened his mouth, but only a choked gasp came out. The betrayal, the pressure, the sheer weight of the web he and his mother had spun finally crushed whatever defense he had left.

"My mother..." Julian whispered, his voice cracking. "My mother arranged everything. When our family business went under five years ago, she met Arthur. They needed control of Elena's father's patents. They told me if I seduced Elena, married her, and slowly drove her insane, we could force her to sign over her voting shares."

Ruiz recorded every word on his digital recorder. "And the poison? The stairs?"

"That was Vanessa," Julian whimpered, burying his face in his hands. "Arthur brought Vanessa in because he needed someone ruthless enough to finish the job when Elena wouldn't break. I... I didn't want Elena to die. I just wanted the money."

"You're a coward, Julian," Ruiz said with absolute disgust, standing up and gathering his files. "You traded your wife, your child, and your soul for cash that you'll never get to spend."

As Ruiz walked out of the room, leaving Julian sobbing in the harsh fluorescent light, the detective knew they had everything they needed to bring down the entire syndicate. But there was still one piece missing. Arthur Vance was still out there, and he wouldn't go down without a fight.
