Chapter 11: Shadows of the Past

The heavy oak door of the estate's private study clicked shut, sealing Elena inside a room that once belonged to Margaret. The shelves, lined with rare leather-bound books and heavy ledgers, no longer reeked of deception. Yet, as Elena opened the central oak desk drawer to sort through a final batch of old corporate filings, a hidden panel caught her eye. A subtle, non-standard gap in the wood.

With a sharp pull, a secret compartment slid open, revealing a dusty velvet box.

Inside lay a collection of yellowed newspaper clippings, a handwritten journal, and a birth certificate dated decades prior. Elena's breath hitched as she unfolded the top clipping. The headline read: “Local Tech Prodigy Disappears Under Mysterious Circumstances.” The name of the missing engineer wasn’t her father—it was Thomas Vance, Arthur Vance’s younger brother.

She opened the handwritten journal, flipping past frantic engineering schematics and personal notes until her eyes locked onto a chilling entry written in Margaret's sharp, elegant cursive:
“Thomas is asking too many questions about the patent distribution. Arthur agreed that if the accident at the lab doesn't look like suicide, it must look like an oversight. Once Thomas is gone, we consolidate the entire portfolio under our joint venture. The girl, Elena, will inherit nothing.”

Elena’s hands trembled, not with fear, but with a cold, righteous fury. The Howard empire—the very wealth Julian and Margaret had tried to steal from her—had been built on the blood and stolen genius of her own biological family’s true founders. They hadn’t just tried to murder her; they were continuing a multi-generational cycle of corporate assassination and betrayal.

She pulled out her encrypted phone, dialing a direct, secure line.

"Ray," she said the moment the call connected, her voice steady and sharp as a blade. "I found something. Margaret didn't just steal my father's company twenty years ago. She murdered my uncle to steal the original patents thirty years ago."

On the other end of the line, Detective Ruiz went completely silent for a moment. Then, his tone hardened. "Send me photos of the documents immediately, Elena. We're reopening the cold case files today."
