Chapter 19: The Visitor at the Gates

Six months after the trial, a brisk autumn breeze swept through the manicured hedges of the Vance Estate. Elena was sitting in the courtyard garden, watching little Leo take his very first wobbly steps across the soft emerald grass, clapping her hands with encouragement as he tumbled forward into a fit of giggles.
At the front security gate, the intercom chime sounded softly.
Elena’s head snapped up. The automated security system transmitted a live video feed directly to the tablet resting on her garden table.
Standing outside the heavy wrought-iron gates wasn't an assassin, a lawyer, or a federal agent.
It was Julian Howard.
He looked unrecognizable. His designer suits were gone, replaced by a cheap, standard-issue gray inmate jumpsuit from the minimum-security transition wing of the federal penitentiary. His hair was shaved close, his face gaunt, his eyes hollowed out by months of hard labor and bitter regret. He clutched the iron bars of the gate with trembling, empty hands, staring longingly across the courtyard toward where Elena and his son stood.
Elena didn't move. She didn't flinch. She simply picked up her tablet, tapped the intercom button, and stood up gracefully.
"Elena... please," Julian's voice cracked through the speaker, ragged and desperate. "Just... let me see him. Let me see my son. I know I destroyed everything. I know I was a monster. But please... I'm begging you."
Elena walked slowly toward the front gates, her heels clicking softly against the stone pathway. She stopped just a few feet away from the iron bars, looking at the broken man who had once tried to trade her life for a fortune.
"You don't have a son, Julian," Elena said, her voice entirely calm, clear, and utterly freezing. "You traded away your family the moment you signed your mother's contracts and invited a killer into our home."
"I was manipulated!" Julian sobbed, falling to his knees against the cold metal gate. "Margaret controlled me! Arthur manipulated us all!"
"Margaret and Arthur are where they belong, and very soon, so will you be for the rest of your sentence," Elena replied, her gaze piercing through him. "You made your bed, Julian. Now you get to rot in it."

Without another word, Elena turned her back on him, walking back across the courtyard toward her son.
Julian screamed her name once, a pathetic, hopeless sound swallowed up by the wind, before collapsing completely against the gates. He was entirely alone, erased from the very kingdom he had tried to steal.
