Chapter 1: The Sirens' Song

The silence in the grand foyer was suffocating, broken only by the sharp, erratic gasps escaping Vanessa’s lips. She clung to Mrs. Howard, burying her face in the older woman’s cashmere sweater, playing the role of the traumatized victim to absolute perfection.
"I didn't mean to," Vanessa sobbed, her voice echoing off the high, vaulted ceilings of the mansion. "Eleanor is just... she's been so unstable lately, Margaret. You know how she gets. She lunged at me. I just put my hands up to protect myself!"
Margaret Howard, Julian’s mother and the matriarch of the family, stroked Vanessa’s hair, her eyes darting nervously toward Elena's unmoving body on the floor. "Hush now, Vanessa. It was self-defense. Julian will understand. We all know Elena's pregnancy hormones have made her hysterical."
On the cold hardwood floor, Elena remained perfectly still. Her eyes were shut, her breathing artificially shallow. Every muscle in her body ached from the impact, and a sharp, terrifying pain pulsed near her lower back. But she couldn't break character. Not yet. Her hand remained protectively curled over her swollen belly. Please, God, let the baby be safe, she prayed silently. Just five more minutes.
Suddenly, the wail of sirens shattered the quiet evening.
Vanessa’s head snapped up, her tear-stained face suddenly draining of color. "Sirens? Why are there sirens? Margaret, did you call 911?"
"No," Mrs. Howard stammered, stepping back. "I haven't even found my phone yet."
Before either woman could comprehend what was happening, the massive oak front doors were thrown open. A flood of red and blue lights spilled into the foyer, casting long, menacing shadows across the marble. Four paramedics rushed in with a stretcher, followed closely by uniformed police officers.
And then, stepping through the chaos with a badge clipped to his belt and a grim expression on his weathered face, was Detective Ray Ruiz.
"Secure the perimeter!" Ruiz barked to the officers. He didn't even look at Vanessa or Mrs. Howard. His eyes locked instantly on Elena. He knelt beside her, checking her pulse, his voice dropping to a gentle murmur. "Elena, I’m here. We’ve got you."
Elena let out a soft groan, allowing her eyelids to flutter open. She looked up at Ruiz, squeezing his wrist weakly. The message was clear: I'm alive. Spring the trap.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Mrs. Howard demanded, finally finding her voice. She pulled herself up to her full height, dripping with old-money indignation. "Who let you into my son's house?"
"Ma'am, step back," an officer ordered, holding out an arm to block her.
"Detective!" Vanessa shrieked, stepping forward, her hands raised defensively. "Thank God you're here! My name is Vanessa. That woman on the floor—she attacked me! She's completely lost her mind. I had to push her away, and she tripped!"
Ruiz stood up slowly, watching as the EMTs carefully lifted Elena onto the stretcher. He turned to face Vanessa. His dark eyes were utterly devoid of sympathy. He didn't see a crying victim; he saw a predator caught in the headlights.
"Is that right, ma'am?" Ruiz asked, his voice dangerously calm. "She tripped?"
"Yes! It was a terrible accident!" Vanessa cried, squeezing out a fresh wave of tears.
Right at that moment, the screech of tires outside signaled the arrival of a sleek black Mercedes. Julian Howard burst through the front doors, his designer suit rumpled, panic written across his handsome face. "Elena! What happened? Mom? Vanessa?"
Vanessa immediately threw herself into Julian’s arms, sobbing against his chest. "Julian! It was awful! Elena tried to hurt me! She went crazy!"

Julian wrapped his arms around his mistress, looking at the police in confusion, but there was a flicker of dark relief in his eyes. A look that Elena, being wheeled past him on the stretcher, caught perfectly. He wasn't worried about her. He was relieved that their problem might finally be solved.
Elena closed her eyes as the paramedics loaded her into the back of the ambulance. She let a tiny, grim smile touch her lips. Enjoy the hug, Julian, she thought as the ambulance doors slammed shut. It’s the last piece of comfort you’re going to get.
