Chapter 13: The Queen’s Gambit

The secure monitor flared to life, casting a harsh, sterile blue light across the dark study. On the screen, Margaret Howard sat behind a thick sheet of reinforced ballistic glass inside the bleak, concrete-walled visitation booth of the Colorado supermax facility.
Her hair was unstyled, her skin pale, and the expensive designer clothes were replaced by a coarse orange jumpsuit. Yet, the venom in her eyes remained entirely intact.
"You look well, Elena," Margaret rasped, her voice cracked and strained from the dry mountain air. "Motherhood suits you. Too bad you won't be able to protect that child forever."
Elena leaned back in her leather chair, her expression an impenetrable wall of ice. "Save the dramatics, Margaret. You're behind twenty feet of concrete and steel, talking to the sole owner of everything you spent your entire life trying to steal. Why are you calling?"
Margaret let out a bitter, raspy laugh, leaning forward until her face was nearly pressed against the glass. "You found Thomas's journal, didn't you? You think you've uncovered the ultimate family secret. You think you've won the game."
"I have won," Elena replied evenly. "You're rotting in a box, Julian is facing decades in a federal cell, and your little syndicate is completely dismantled."
"My syndicate?" Margaret sneered, her eyes flashing with a dangerous, manic brilliance. "Arthur and I were just caretakers of the machine, Elena. You think your father built this empire from scratch? The venture capital that funded his initial tech breakthroughs thirty years ago didn't come from a bank. It came from an international syndicate that doesn't forgive, and doesn't forget."
Elena's eyes narrowed slightly, though her voice remained steady. "What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about the people Arthur answered to," Margaret whispered, her voice dropping to an ominous hiss. "You think locking me away stops the pipeline? The moment those offshore accounts are fully repatriated into your name, the syndicate’s automated asset recovery protocols activate. They aren't just going to sue you, Elena. They are coming for everything your father built—and they are coming for your son."

The screen flickered violently as Margaret finished speaking, cutting out into a burst of static.
Elena sat frozen in the dimly lit study. Was Margaret just spinning a desperate web of lies to terrify her from beyond her prison cell, or was there a deeper, darker shadow looming over the Howard estate?
