Chapter 16: Unmasking the Shadow

The blinding glare of the forensic lights in the master bedroom cast stark, elongated shadows across the walls. Two federal agents hauled the restrained intruder to his feet, yipping off the black balaclava.
A sharp gasp escaped Detective Ruiz’s lips. "I'll be damned."
The man glaring back at them wasn't a faceless syndicate hitman from abroad. It was Marcus Vance—Arthur Vance’s estranged nephew and the very same man Vanessa had been planning to flee to in Paris. He had returned, not just out of lingering affection for a disgraced lover, but to salvage the hidden assets before the federal government could lock them down permanently.
Marcus spat a bloody glob onto the hardwood, his eyes locking onto Elena with venomous hatred. "You think you've won everything, don't you? You're just a spoiled tech brat playing detective. My uncle's network runs deeper than you can possibly imagine. Even behind bars, he—"
"He is in a federal supermax facility with zero outside communication, Marcus," Elena interrupted, her voice entirely devoid of emotion. She stood tall, cradling Leo securely with one arm while looking down at the fallen conspirator. "And you are joining him tonight for breaking and entering, attempted kidnapping, and domestic terrorism."
Ruiz signaled the agents to drag Marcus away. As they hauled him out through the shattered bedroom door, Marcus’s desperate screams echoed down the hallway, fading into the distance as the heavy boots of the federal marshals escorted him out to a waiting van.

Silence settled back over the mansion. The terrifying storm had finally broken, leaving behind absolute, unshakeable calm.
Elena walked slowly back to the nursery, gently placing Leo into his crib as he let out a soft, sleepy yawn. She brushed a strand of dark hair from his forehead, whispering, "It's finally over, my sweet boy. The shadows are gone."
