Chapter 3: The Sterile Truth

The steady beep of the heart monitor was the only sound in the private hospital room. Elena lay in the bed, an IV line hooked to her hand, her face pale but her eyes burning with an intense, quiet fire.

The door opened softly, and a doctor walked in, followed by Detective Ruiz.

"Mrs. Howard," the doctor said gently, looking at his chart. "You're a very lucky woman. You suffered a minor concussion, extensive bruising, and a fractured rib. But miraculously, the placenta is intact. You and the baby are going to be fine. We just need to keep you here on bed rest for observation."

Elena let out a breath she felt like she had been holding for months. She placed both hands over her stomach. "Thank you, doctor. Thank you so much."

As the doctor left the room, Ruiz pulled up a chair beside her bed. He pulled out a small tablet. "You took a massive risk, Elena. You could have been killed."

"I knew how to fall," Elena said coldly. "I took stunt classes in college, remember? I made sure my shoulders and back took the brunt of the impact. I had to let her push me, Ruiz. I needed her to cross the line from psychological torment to physical assault. It was the only way to prove what they were planning."

Ruiz nodded, tapping the screen of his tablet. "Well, your trap worked beautifully. We pulled the server from the basement. My tech guys are already exporting the footage. We have the assault in 4K resolution with crystal clear audio. But that’s not the best part."

Elena looked at him, her eyes narrowing. "What did you find?"

Before Ruiz could answer, heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway outside. The door burst open, and Julian rushed in, his face a perfect mask of husbandly concern. He had managed to slip away from the estate under the guise of an "emergency hospital visit," clearly hoping to manipulate Elena before the police got to her.

"Elena! Oh my god, my sweet Elena!" Julian cried, rushing toward the bed, reaching out to grab her hand.

Elena didn't pull away. She just stared at him. Her eyes were as cold as a frozen lake.

Julian stopped, unsettled by her gaze. "Honey? Are you okay? The police are at the house going crazy. Vanessa was just trying to help, she said you slipped—"

"Julian," Elena interrupted, her voice dangerously quiet. "Did you know she put antifreeze in my morning tea two weeks ago?"

Julian froze. The color instantly vanished from his cheeks. His jaw worked, but no sound came out.

"Don't look so shocked," Elena continued, her voice gaining strength, echoing off the sterile hospital walls. "I didn't drink it. I poured it into a sample jar and gave it to Detective Ruiz. I’ve been making my own food in secret for a month. I know about the poison. I know about the fake psychiatric evaluations you paid Dr. Sterling to write. I know you were planning to have me committed to a mental institution so you could take control of my father's trust fund."

Julian backed away from the bed, his hands shaking. "Elena... you're confused. You hit your head. You're not making any sense."

May you like

Detective Ruiz stood up, towering over Julian. "She makes perfect sense to me, Mr. Howard. But if you're confused, I can clear things up for you." Ruiz pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs. "Julian Howard, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, and fraud. You have the right to remain silent. I highly suggest you use it."

As the metal cuffs clicked shut around Julian’s wrists, the illusion of his perfect life shattered into a million irreparable pieces. Elena turned her head toward the window, refusing to even look at him as he was dragged out of the room, begging and crying like a coward.
