Chapter 2: The Digital Trap

The ambulance sped through the rainy streets of the city, its sirens blaring a path through the evening traffic. Inside, Elena stared at the sterile white ceiling of the vehicle, enduring the sharp twinges of pain radiating from her abdomen.
"Blood pressure is stable, but we're seeing some spotting," the paramedic, a young woman with kind eyes, said into her radio. She squeezed Elena's shoulder. "Hang in there, honey. We're three minutes out from Cedars-Sinai. Your baby has a strong heartbeat. You're both fighting hard."
Tears of genuine relief finally leaked from the corners of Elena's eyes. The baby was alive. That was all that mattered. Everything else—the cheating husband, the homewrecker, the toxic mother-in-law—could burn to the ground. In fact, she had already struck the match.
Back at the Howard estate, the atmosphere was rapidly deteriorating.
"I demand you leave my house this instant!" Julian roared, pointing a trembling finger at Detective Ruiz. "My wife has just suffered a tragic fall. I need to be at the hospital with her, and you are harassing my family!"
Ruiz didn’t flinch. He casually pulled a folded piece of paper from the inner pocket of his worn leather jacket. He smoothed it out and handed it to Julian.
"What is this?" Julian snapped.
"That, Mr. Howard, is a search warrant," Ruiz said, his voice ringing clearly across the grand foyer. "Signed by Judge Harrison twenty minutes ago. We have authorization to search this property, seize all electronic devices, and access the internal security network."
Vanessa’s fake crying stopped instantly. Her breath hitched. "Security network? What do you mean? We don't have cameras inside the house. Julian had them removed for privacy."
Ruiz offered a terrifying, razor-thin smile. "You're right, Ms. Vanessa. Mr. Howard did have the official cameras removed. But the owner of the house, Mrs. Elena Howard—whose name is the sole name on the deed, if I recall correctly—had a private security firm install hidden micro-cameras in the smoke detectors, the chandeliers, and the air vents three weeks ago."
The blood drained from Julian’s face. He looked like he had just been struck by lightning. "What?"
Vanessa stumbled backward, her designer heels clicking frantically against the marble floor. She instinctively reached into her Chanel purse and grabbed her smartphone. Her thumb scrambled to open it, desperate to delete the text messages, the audio files, the sick, twisted plans she had made with Julian over the past month.
Before she could unlock the screen, a heavy hand clamped down on her wrist. An officer smoothly pried the phone from her trembling fingers.
"Hey! That is my personal property!" Vanessa screamed, her carefully constructed facade crumbling into pure, venomous panic.
"Evidence," Ruiz corrected, bagging the phone in a clear plastic pouch. He leaned in close to Vanessa, his voice dropping to a chilling whisper. "You see, Vanessa, Elena came to me weeks ago. She knew you were sleeping with her husband. But cheating isn't a crime. Conspiracy to commit murder, however? That gets you twenty-five to life."
Mrs. Howard gasped, clutching her pearls. "Murder? Julian, what is he talking about?"
May you like
Julian couldn't speak. He was staring at the small, blinking smoke detector above his head. He remembered what they had talked about in this very hallway. He remembered Vanessa saying, 'If she falls the right way, we don't have to worry about alimony or child support.'
"Tear the place apart," Ruiz ordered his men. "Find the main server. And nobody leaves this house."
