Chapter 9 - The Return of the Lost

Chapter 9 - The Return of the Lost

The woman's voice echoed through the mansion.
"Daniel."
Nobody moved.
The father stood in the center of the hallway.
His entire body felt frozen.
Because some voices never disappear.
Some voices stay buried inside memories.
A voice that once called his name every morning.
A voice that once laughed beside him.
A voice he thought he would never hear again.
"Claire..."
The name escaped his lips.
The girlfriend looked terrified.
Michael's expression finally changed.
For the first time that night...
He looked nervous.
The contractor noticed.
"You know she's alive."
Michael didn't answer.
That silence was enough.
The front door opened wider.
Slow footsteps moved across the marble floor.
The father stared toward the entrance.
A woman appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
The same eyes.
The same face.
The same person he had mourned for seven years.
Claire.
Daniel's mother.
The father's knees almost gave out.
He grabbed the wall for support.
"No..."
Claire looked at him.
Tears filled her eyes.
"I know."
The father could not speak.
Thousands of questions fought inside his mind.
Anger.
Relief.
Pain.
Confusion.
All at once.
The woman he loved was standing in front of him.
Alive.
After seven years.
After all the funerals.
All the nights alone.
All the moments he begged for answers.
She was here.
The father finally found his voice.
"Why?"
Claire looked down.
Because she knew there was no easy answer.
"I tried to come back."
The father laughed bitterly.
"You tried?"
His voice cracked.
"You let me bury you."
Claire closed her eyes.
"I didn't have a choice."
The father stepped closer.
"Everyone has a choice."
Claire looked toward Daniel's empty screen.
"No."
Her voice became quiet.
"Not when someone threatens your child."
The hallway became silent.
Daniel's name changed everything.
The father looked at her.
"What happened that night?"
Claire looked toward Michael.
Her expression changed.
"Ask him."
Everyone turned.
Michael remained still.
The father stared at his brother.
"You lied to me."
Michael smiled faintly.
"I protected the family."
The father stepped forward.
"You destroyed it."
Michael shook his head.
"No."
"You destroyed it the moment you trusted the wrong people."
The father looked confused.
"What does that mean?"
Claire walked closer.
"Michael wasn't working alone."
The girlfriend looked down.
The father immediately noticed.
"Who else?"
Nobody answered.
Claire looked toward the upstairs room.
"The person who planned everything is someone you never suspected."
The father followed her gaze.
The mansion suddenly felt colder.
Every room.
Every hallway.
Every memory.
Could contain another lie.
Daniel's camcorder suddenly played again.
Everyone turned.
The recording showed young Daniel.
But this time, Claire was there.
The father stared.
His wife was younger.
Holding their son.
Crying.
The recording shook as if someone was hiding.
Claire whispered:
"Daniel, listen to me."
Young Daniel looked scared.
"Mom, what's happening?"
Claire held his face.
"Your father must never know until it is safe."
The father watched in confusion.
Why would his wife hide the truth from him?
Then another voice appeared.
A voice from behind the camera.
A voice that made Claire freeze.
A voice that made the father recognize the danger.
"I told you not to record anything."
Claire turned.
The video stopped.
The father looked at Michael.
But Michael was not looking at him.
He was looking at someone behind them.
Everyone slowly turned.
Standing at the end of the hallway was another person.
A person nobody expected.
The contractor stepped back.
"Who is that?"
The father stared.
Because the stranger was holding a folder.
A folder filled with old documents.
And on the front was a name.
His name.
The stranger walked closer.
"I think it's time you finally learned what really happened."
The father looked at Claire.
Then Michael.
Then the folder.
"What is that?"
The stranger placed it on the table.
"Everything they wanted hidden."
The father opened the folder.
Inside were medical records.
Financial transfers.
Private messages.
And one document that made his hands shake.
A death certificate.
But not his wife's.
Not Daniel's.
Someone else's.
Someone whose name explained the entire mystery.
The father looked up slowly.
"Who is this?"
The stranger answered:
"The person who started all of this."
A pause.
"The person you have been protecting for seven years."
The father stared at the paper.
And then he realized the truth.
May you like
The biggest betrayal had never come from an enemy.
It came from inside his own family.
