Chapter 10 - The Name on the Death Certificate

Chapter 10 - The Name on the Death Certificate

The billionaire father stared at the document in his hands.

The room felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

Every person around him was waiting for his reaction.

But he couldn't move.

He couldn't speak.

Because the name printed on the death certificate belonged to someone he never expected.

Someone connected to everything.

Someone he had trusted.

The father slowly looked up.

"Who gave you this?"

The stranger remained calm.

"My name is Thomas."

He placed another folder on the table.

"I spent seven years collecting evidence."

The father looked at Claire.

"Did you know about this?"

Claire looked away.

That answer hurt more than any words.

The father stepped backward.

"Everyone knew."

His voice became quiet.

"Everyone knew except me."

Daniel watched his father carefully.

The boy understood that the truth was hurting him.

But he also knew the truth was the only thing that could finally free them.

Thomas opened the folder.

"The night Daniel disappeared was not an accident."

The father looked at him.

"I know that now."

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

"You know someone lied."

"You don't know how deep it goes."

The contractor crossed his arms.

"Then explain."

Thomas looked around the mansion.

"This house was built on secrets."

He pointed toward the hidden walls.

"Every room."

"Every locked door."

"Every missing record."

"It was all part of the same plan."

The father looked at Michael.

"What plan?"

Michael remained silent.

Thomas answered.

"Control."

The father frowned.

"Control what?"

Thomas looked directly at him.

"Your company."

The room became silent.

The father had suspected money.

But hearing it confirmed made it worse.

Thomas continued.

"Seven years ago, someone discovered that your entire company would be transferred to Daniel when he turned eighteen."

The father froze.

"That was private."

Thomas nodded.

"Exactly."

The father looked at Daniel.

His son had been the target.

Not because he was weak.

Because he was valuable.

Thomas opened another file.

"Your enemies knew they couldn't take the company from you."

"So they planned to remove the person who would inherit it."

The father clenched his fists.

"And Claire?"

Thomas looked at her.

"Claire discovered the plan."

The father turned.

His eyes filled with confusion.

"Then why didn't she tell me?"

Claire finally spoke.

"Because they threatened Daniel."

Her voice broke.

"They showed me proof they could reach him anywhere."

The father stared.

"I could have protected you."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

"You would have fought."

"And they knew exactly how to hurt you."

The father looked down.

For years, he believed Claire abandoned him.

But now he realized she had been fighting a war alone.

Daniel walked closer.

"Mom tried to save me."

The father looked at his son.

"You knew?"

Daniel nodded.

"She came back."

The father froze.

"When?"

The boy looked toward the hidden room.

"Many times."

The room went silent.

The father stared.

"She visited you?"

Daniel nodded.

"She couldn't take me out."

"She said someone was watching."

Claire covered her face.

The guilt was overwhelming.

"I thought I would find a way."

The father looked at her.

"And you failed."

The words were painful.

But Claire nodded.

"I know."

Before anyone could respond, the mansion lights suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then every security screen turned on.

The same image appeared.

A dark room.

A chair.

A table.

And a person sitting in the shadows.

The father immediately recognized the room.

It was the hidden room.

But someone was inside it.

A voice came through the speakers.

"You found the truth."

Everyone froze.

The voice was distorted.

The father stepped closer to the screen.

"Who are you?"

A quiet laugh answered.

"You really don't know?"

The voice continued.

"You spent years searching for your son."

A pause.

"But you never searched for the person who helped him disappear."

The father looked at everyone.

Claire.

Michael.

The girlfriend.

Thomas.

Nobody spoke.

The voice continued.

"The child survived because someone inside this family protected him."

The father stared.

"Who?"

The person on the screen leaned forward.

The camera finally revealed part of their face.

Everyone gasped.

Because the person behind the mask was someone who should have been impossible.

Someone connected to the night Daniel vanished.

Someone who had been erased from every record.

The voice whispered:

"You should have asked why your son was never found."

The screen went black.

Then one final message appeared.

A single sentence.

"The real traitor is still standing beside you."

Everyone slowly turned.

May you like

And for the first time...

The father realized the person closest to him might be the person he needed to fear most.
