Chapter 5 - The Man in the Shadows

Chapter 5 - The Man in the Shadows

The sound of the unknown voice continued to echo through the hallway.
The billionaire father stood frozen.
The camcorder screen flickered in his hand.
The image showed only darkness.
A trembling child.
And a shadow standing behind him.
The contractor moved closer.
"Do you know that voice?"
The father did not answer.
His eyes remained locked on the screen.
Because deep inside, he already knew.
The voice belonged to someone he trusted.
Someone who had been in his house.
Someone who had been close enough to destroy his family.
The recording continued.
The shadow moved closer to Daniel.
The boy's breathing became faster.
Then the voice whispered again.
"You should have never found the camera."
The father clenched his fists.
The girlfriend watched him carefully.
For the first time, she looked afraid of something other than being exposed.
The father slowly turned toward her.
"Who is he?"
She said nothing.
"Who is he?"
His voice became louder.
The woman looked away.
That reaction told him everything.
She knew.
The father stepped closer.
"Seven years."
His voice shook with anger.
"Seven years I searched for my son."
"I blamed myself every single day."
"I believed I failed him."
He pointed toward the camcorder.
"But you knew he was alive."
The girlfriend swallowed.
"I was trying to protect you."
The contractor looked disgusted.
"Protect him?"
The father laughed quietly.
A painful laugh.
"You buried my child inside my own home."
The woman immediately shook her head.
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this."
Those words stopped everyone.
The father stared at her.
"What wasn't supposed to happen?"
She realized her mistake.
Too late.
The contractor slowly reached for his phone.
The father noticed.
"Call the police."
The girlfriend suddenly moved.
"No."
Her voice was sharp.
Everyone looked at her.
She quickly tried to regain control.
"I mean..."
She paused.
"I can explain."
The father looked at her coldly.
"Then explain."
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because there was no explanation that could erase what they had found.
The father looked down at the camcorder.
The recording was still running.
Then he noticed something.
A small timestamp in the corner.
The video had not been created seven years ago.
It was recorded today.
The father froze.
"Wait."
Everyone looked at him.
He replayed the last few seconds.
The shadow behind Daniel.
The voice.
The warning.
Then the timestamp.
Today's date.
The father felt a sudden wave of fear.
"This wasn't an old recording."
The contractor frowned.
"What do you mean?"
The father lifted the camcorder.
"Someone recorded this today."
Silence.
The girlfriend stepped backward.
"No."
The father looked toward the open front door.
The person who took Daniel was not a memory.
Not a ghost from the past.
Someone had entered the house.
Someone had been watching.
Someone knew they found the boy.
Daniel was still missing.
And the person responsible was still nearby.
The contractor checked every room on the first floor.
Nothing.
The father searched the hallway.
Nothing.
Then he heard something.
A faint tapping sound.
Coming from inside the wall.
Everyone stopped.
The contractor slowly turned.
"No..."
He walked toward the sound.
The same wall.
The same place where Daniel had been hidden.
But this time, the noise was different.
It wasn't coming from inside.
It was coming from behind another section.
A second hidden space.
The father felt his stomach tighten.
"There was another one?"
The contractor touched the wall.
"Someone built this entire area."
He looked serious.
"Not just one hiding place."
The father stared at the wall.
The mansion was no longer a home.
It was a maze.
A maze built around secrets.
The contractor raised his hammer again.
The girlfriend suddenly screamed.
"Stop!"
Everyone turned.
Her panic was impossible to hide.
The father looked at her.
"Why?"
She remained silent.
The father stepped closer.
"Why are you afraid of this wall?"
The woman lowered her eyes.
And for the first time...
She whispered the truth.
"Because he knows."
The father froze.
"Who knows?"
The girlfriend looked toward the hidden wall.
"The person who helped me."
A cold silence filled the hallway.
The father felt the world shift again.
There was someone else.
Someone behind the disappearance.
Someone who had planned everything.
The contractor lifted the hammer.
The first strike hit the wall.
A crack appeared.
The second strike broke through the plaster.
Dust filled the hallway.
Then something fell from inside.
A small object landed on the floor.
A phone.
The father picked it up.
The screen was still on.
There was one message waiting.
One sentence.
The father read it aloud.
"You're too late."
Everyone froze.
Then another message appeared.
This time with a photo attached.
The father opened it.
And his hands began shaking.
Because the picture showed Daniel.
Standing beside the person who had been hiding in the shadows.
May you like
The man behind everything.
The man the father thought was dead.
