Chapter 8: The Memory Claire Was Never Supposed to Recover
The question hung in the air.
"What did you do to me?"
Claire’s voice was filled with pain.
Not anger.
Not hatred.

Just confusion.
The kind of confusion that comes when someone discovers their entire life has been built on missing pieces.
Eleanor looked at the floor.
For years, she had carried the truth alone.
But now there was nowhere left to hide.
Ethan stood beside Claire.
He could feel her hands shaking.
"Claire."
"Are you okay?"
She looked at him.
"No."
"Nothing about this is okay."
Marcus watched quietly.
Almost like he expected this moment to happen.
Claire turned back toward him.
"You said I knew you."
"You said someone erased my memories."
"Explain."
Marcus took a slow breath.
"Twenty years ago, you were not just a child caught in a family dispute."
"You were a witness."
Claire froze.
"A witness to what?"
Marcus looked at Eleanor.
"The night your father disappeared."
The room became silent.
Victoria stepped forward.
"No."
"She was too young."
Marcus shook his head.
"She was young."
"But she remembered."
Claire felt a sharp pain in her head.
A strange image flashed through her mind.
A dark hallway.
A broken glass.
Someone crying.
A man's voice shouting.
She grabbed her head.
"Ethan..."
He immediately supported her.
"What is it?"
Claire closed her eyes.
"I don't know."
"But I remember something."
Everyone watched her carefully.
Another memory appeared.
A little girl hiding behind a doorway.
A woman screaming.
A man saying:
"Take Claire away from here."
Claire opened her eyes suddenly.
"I was there."
Victoria covered her mouth.
"My daughter..."
Claire looked at her.
"I saw something that night."
Daniel stepped closer.
"What did you see?"
Claire tried to remember.
But the memories were blurry.
Like someone had covered them with fog.
"I saw my father."
"I saw Eleanor."
"And..."
She stopped.
Everyone waited.
"And someone else."
Marcus nodded.
"Exactly."
Claire looked at him.
"Who?"
Marcus didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he walked toward an old cabinet near the wall.
He opened a drawer.
Inside was a small box.
He placed it on the table.
"This belonged to you."
Claire stared at it.
"I've never seen that before."
Marcus looked at Eleanor.
"She made sure you wouldn't."
Eleanor immediately reacted.
"Stop."
Marcus ignored her.
Claire opened the box.
Inside was a small bracelet.
A child's bracelet.
And a tiny recording device.
Her hands trembled.
"What is this?"
Marcus answered.
"The thing that everyone was afraid of."
Ethan looked confused.
"A recording?"
Marcus nodded.
"Claire recorded something that night."
Victoria looked shocked.
"How?"
Marcus looked at her.
"Daniel gave her the recorder."
"He wanted someone to have proof."
Claire stared at the small device.
"My father gave me this?"
Marcus nodded.
"He knew he might not survive."
The room became heavy with emotion.
Daniel looked at Claire.
"I was trying to protect you."
Claire looked at him.
"You left me."
Daniel’s face showed pain.
"I know."
"And I will regret that forever."
Claire looked down.
The small device suddenly felt heavier than anything she had ever held.
The officer spoke.
"Can we listen to it?"
Everyone looked at Claire.
She hesitated.
Then she pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then a child's voice appeared.
A small girl's voice.
Claire’s voice.
Everyone froze.
Little Claire whispered:
"Daddy said I have to hide."
A moment later, another voice appeared.
An adult voice.
A voice that everyone recognized.
The room became completely still.
The recording continued.
"Give me the documents."
"No one needs to get hurt."
Claire’s face turned pale.
She knew that voice.
She had heard it every day growing up.
The recording became louder.
Daniel’s voice appeared.
"You don't understand what you're doing."
Then a crash.
A scream.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody needed to.
Because the truth was becoming clear.
Claire looked at Eleanor.
Tears filled her eyes.
"That was you."
Eleanor shook her head.
"No."
"I can explain."
Claire stepped back.
"You were there."
"I heard you."
Eleanor’s voice broke.
"You don't understand."
Claire’s anger finally exploded.
"Then explain!"
"Explain why I had to forget my own childhood!"
"Explain why I spent twenty years believing everyone I loved was gone!"
Eleanor looked destroyed.
But before she could answer...
The mansion security alarm suddenly activated.
A loud siren filled the building.
The officer grabbed his radio.
"Something is happening outside."
Ethan looked toward the windows.
A vehicle was speeding away from the estate.
Marcus looked worried for the first time.
"No."
Claire noticed.
"What?"
Marcus stared at the disappearing vehicle.
"The person who stole the evidence..."
"They weren't trying to hide the truth."
"They were trying to escape before we discovered the final piece."
Daniel looked at him.
"What final piece?"
Marcus turned toward Claire.
"The evidence proving who ordered everything."
Claire felt a chill.
"Who?"
Marcus whispered:
"The person who has been controlling this family from the beginning."
Everyone waited.

Then Marcus said the name.
And Claire realized the betrayal was much closer than she ever imagined.
