Chapter 6: Eleanor’s Final Warning

Chapter 6: Eleanor’s Final Warning

The hidden room fell silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The only sound inside the old chamber was the faint ticking of an antique clock sitting on a dusty shelf.

Eleanor stood in the doorway.

Her face was calm.

Almost too calm.

But Claire could see something she had never noticed before.

Fear.

For the first time in her life, Eleanor Hawthorne looked afraid.

Claire held the confession tightly in her hands.

Her fingers were shaking.

"You knew about this room."

Eleanor slowly stepped inside.

"Yes."

Claire stared at her.

"You knew about the files."

"Yes."

"You knew about my parents."

A long silence followed.

Then Eleanor answered quietly.

"Yes."

The word hurt more than Claire expected.

Because part of her had hoped Eleanor would deny everything.

She had hoped there was some explanation.

Some misunderstanding.

But there wasn't.

Claire looked at the woman who had raised her.

The woman she once called family.

"How could you?"

Eleanor looked away.

"I thought I was doing what was necessary."

Claire laughed bitterly.

"Necessary?"

"You destroyed my entire life."

Eleanor’s expression changed.

"You think I don't know that?"

Her voice became emotional.

"You think I don't carry that every single day?"

Nobody expected that reaction.

Even Ethan looked surprised.

Eleanor stepped closer.

"I made choices twenty years ago."

"Choices that I believed would protect you."

Victoria immediately shook her head.

"No."

"You protected the Hawthorne name."

Eleanor looked at her.

"You don't know what happened."

Victoria’s eyes became cold.

"I know exactly what happened."

"You chose power over people."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Enough."

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel’s voice was firm.

"The time for excuses is over."

Eleanor looked at him.

"You have no idea what I sacrificed."

Daniel answered.

"I sacrificed twenty years with my daughter."

"And Victoria sacrificed her entire life."

"So don't tell us about sacrifice."

Claire watched the argument.

She felt overwhelmed.

Every answer created more questions.

She looked down at the confession again.

There was one sentence that kept bothering her.

The person who raised me.

But what exactly did Eleanor do?

Claire looked at her.

"What does this confession mean?"

Eleanor didn't answer.

Claire raised her voice.

"Tell me!"

The room shook with her anger.

"What did you do?"

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Then she whispered:

"I made sure the truth stayed hidden."

Claire waited.

But Eleanor continued.

"I didn't hurt your father."

"I didn't try to kill your mother."

"But I helped someone cover it up."

The room became silent.

Ethan looked shocked.

"Who?"

Eleanor looked toward the hallway.

Like she was afraid someone else was listening.

Then she lowered her voice.

"The person who planned everything."

Claire stepped closer.

"Who is it?"

Eleanor hesitated.

Then she said:

"Someone you have known your entire life."

A cold feeling moved through Claire.

Again.

Another secret.

Another person she trusted.

The officer stepped forward.

"Mrs. Hawthorne, you need to explain everything."

Eleanor nodded slowly.

"I will."

"But not here."

Everyone looked confused.

"Why?"

Eleanor pointed toward the hidden room.

"Because this room is not the only secret place in this house."

Daniel frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Eleanor walked toward an old cabinet.

She opened a hidden compartment.

Inside was a small recording device.

Claire looked confused.

"What is that?"

Eleanor picked it up.

"The reason I never told the truth."

She pressed the button.

A voice immediately filled the room.

A voice from twenty years ago.

Everyone froze.

Because the voice belonged to someone they recognized.

Someone who was supposed to be innocent.

The recording played.

"Once Claire is gone, everything will belong to us."

Claire’s face turned pale.

Ethan looked at her.

"Do you know that voice?"

Claire couldn't answer.

Because she did.

She had heard it every holiday.

Every family gathering.

Every important moment of her life.

The recording continued.

"Nobody will ever find out what happened."

The sound stopped.

The room became silent.

Claire whispered:

"No..."

Victoria grabbed her hand.

"Who is it?"

Claire looked at everyone.

Her eyes filled with disbelief.

Then she said the name.

"The person who betrayed us..."

"Is someone sitting at this table tonight."

Everyone turned toward the ballroom.

Because suddenly, the missing person was no longer the biggest mystery.

The biggest mystery was who had been pretending all along.

Ethan looked at Claire.

"We need to find them."

But before they could leave, the mansion doors suddenly slammed shut.

The lights went out again.

A strange message appeared on the security screen.

One sentence.

Everyone read it together.

"You should have left the past buried."

Claire felt a chill.

May you like

Because whoever sent that message knew everything.

And they were still inside the house.
