Chapter 7: The Guest Who Was Never Invited

Chapter 7: The Guest Who Was Never Invited
The message remained on the security screen.
"You should have left the past buried."
Nobody in the hidden room spoke.
The words felt like a warning.
Not just to Claire.

But to everyone who had spent twenty years hiding the truth.
Ethan stepped closer to the monitor.
"Can you trace where this came from?"
The officer shook his head.
"Not from here."
"The system has been manually overridden."
Daniel looked around the room.
"Someone planned this."
Victoria tightened her grip on Claire’s hand.
"They knew we would find the files."
Claire stared at the screen.
Her mind was racing.
For years, she believed her life was simple.
A childhood without answers.
A mother who disappeared.
A father who was gone.
A family who raised her.
Now everything had changed.
The people she trusted were connected to a secret that could destroy them all.
Ethan turned toward the others.
"Everyone needs to stay together."
"Whoever did this is trying to separate us."
The officer nodded.
"No one leaves this house."
They slowly walked back toward the ballroom.
But the atmosphere had completely changed.
The guests who once admired the Hawthorne family were now watching each other with suspicion.
Every person looked like they had something to hide.
Claire looked around the room.
Then she noticed something.
One guest was standing alone near the window.
A man she had never seen before.
He was dressed in a dark suit.
Calm.
Confident.
Almost like he belonged there.
Claire frowned.
"Who is that?"
Everyone followed her eyes.
The officer immediately approached him.
"Sir, can I ask your name?"
The man smiled slightly.
"Of course."
"My name is Marcus Vale."
Daniel’s expression changed instantly.
The color disappeared from his face.
"No."
Everyone looked at him.
Ethan noticed.
"You know him?"
Daniel stared at Marcus.
"I thought you were gone."
Marcus smiled.
"Everyone thought you were gone too."
The tension in the room became unbearable.
Claire looked between them.
"Who is he?"
Nobody answered.
Marcus stepped forward.
"I guess introductions are necessary."
He looked at Claire.
"I'm the reason your family has been lying to you."
The room erupted.
Claire stared at him.
"What?"
Ethan immediately moved closer to her.
"Stay back."
Marcus raised his hands.
"I'm not here to hurt anyone."
Victoria’s voice was cold.
"Then why are you here?"
Marcus looked at her.
"Because the truth is finally coming out."
Daniel stepped forward.
"You don't get to talk about truth."
"You destroyed everything."
Marcus laughed softly.
"Did I?"
"Or did I simply reveal what your family was already capable of?"
Claire looked confused.
"Someone explain."
Marcus looked at her.
"You deserve to know."
Daniel interrupted.
"No."
"She deserves the truth from people who actually care about her."
Marcus looked amused.
"Care about her?"
"You mean the people who lied to her for twenty years?"
Claire felt the words hit her.
Because they were true.
Everyone had lied.
Even the people who claimed they were protecting her.
Marcus continued.
"Your mother disappeared because she found something she shouldn't have."
"Your father vanished because he tried to expose it."
"And Eleanor covered everything up."
Claire looked at Eleanor.
"Is that true?"
Eleanor remained silent.
Marcus smiled.
"See?"
"Silence tells you everything."
Ethan stepped forward.
"You were involved."
Marcus looked at him.
"I was."
The confession shocked everyone.
But then Marcus continued.
"But I wasn't the only one."
He walked toward the center of the room.
"The Hawthorne family has always had secrets."
"Illegal deals."
"Hidden accounts."
"Destroyed evidence."
Daniel clenched his fists.
"You are the one who manipulated everything."
Marcus looked at him.
"Maybe."
"But ask yourself something."
"If I was the only villain..."
"Why did everyone help me?"
The room went quiet.
Claire looked at Eleanor.
Then at Daniel.
Then at Victoria.
She wanted to believe someone was completely innocent.
But every answer revealed another layer of betrayal.
The officer stepped toward Marcus.
"You are going to need to explain your involvement."
Marcus nodded.
"I will."
"But first..."
He looked directly at Claire.
"There is something you need to see."
Claire hesitated.
"What?"
Marcus reached into his jacket.
He pulled out an old photograph.
Then he placed it on the table.
Claire picked it up.
Her hands immediately started shaking.
Because the photograph showed her as a little girl.
Standing beside Marcus.
At Hawthorne Estate.
But Claire had never met him.
Or at least...
She thought she hadn't.
She looked at him in confusion.
"Why am I in this picture?"
Marcus stared at her.
"Because you knew me before you forgot."
Claire’s breathing became uneven.
"What are you talking about?"
Marcus lowered his voice.
"Someone erased part of your childhood."
The room went silent.
Ethan looked shocked.
"That's impossible."
Marcus shook his head.
"No."
"It's the reason this family secret survived for so long."
Claire looked at Eleanor.
And Eleanor’s expression told her everything.
She knew.
She had always known.
Claire whispered:
"What did you do to me?"
Eleanor looked away.
May you like
And for the first time...
She couldn't answer.
