Chapter 5: The Enemy Inside the Family

Chapter 5: The Enemy Inside the Family
The ballroom felt colder than it had moments before.
The elegant decorations.
The expensive paintings.
The golden chandeliers hanging above them.

Everything that once represented the power of the Hawthorne family now felt like a reminder of the secrets hidden behind their wealth.
Claire stood frozen between the two people she had spent her entire life searching for.
Her mother.
Her father.
Both alive.
Both carrying years of pain.
And both saying the same thing.
Someone had tried to destroy their family.
Claire looked at Daniel.
The man she had believed was nothing more than a forgotten name.
"You were alive all this time?"
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I know what it looks like."
"No explanation can erase what happened."
Claire’s voice shook.
"Twenty years."
"You let me believe I had no parents."
Daniel took a slow breath.
"Every day away from you was painful."
"But coming back too soon would have put you in danger."
Claire looked confused.
"Danger from who?"
The room became silent again.
Daniel looked around.
His eyes stopped on every member of the Hawthorne family.
Then they stopped on Eleanor.
"I think everyone here already knows."
Eleanor immediately reacted.
"Don't do this."
Daniel looked at her.
"I spent twenty years protecting the truth."
"And now it's time everyone hears it."
Claire watched the two of them.
There was history between them.
Pain.
Anger.
Betrayal.
But there was also something else.
Fear.
Ethan stepped closer to Daniel.
"If someone tried to kill you, why didn't you go to the police?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Because the person behind it had influence."
"Money."
"Connections."
"And the ability to make evidence disappear."
The officer in the room immediately became more serious.
"Do you have proof?"
Daniel nodded.
"I do."
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small key.
The guests watched silently.
"This key opens a safety deposit box."
"Inside is everything."
"Every transaction."
"Every document."
"Every name."
Claire looked at the key.
"Whose name is on those documents?"
Daniel hesitated.
Then he answered.
"The person who betrayed us."
Before anyone could react, a loud crash came from the hallway.
Everyone turned.
The mansion lights flickered.
A moment later, the entire ballroom went dark.
People screamed.
Someone knocked over a table.
Guests rushed toward the doors.
Claire immediately felt Ethan’s hand protectively grab her arm.
"Stay close to me."
She nodded.
"I can't see anything."
"I know."
"Don't move."
The darkness lasted only a few seconds.
But when the lights returned, something had changed.
The folder containing the evidence was gone.
The documents.
The photographs.
The letter from Victoria.
Everything had disappeared.
Claire looked around in shock.
"What happened?"
Ethan immediately scanned the room.
"Someone took it."
The officer shouted.
"Nobody leaves this house."
The doors were quickly closed.
The guests looked nervous.
Because whoever stole the evidence was still there.
Inside the mansion.
Among them.
Daniel’s expression became serious.
"They knew."
Claire looked at him.
"Who?"
"They knew I was coming back."
Victoria looked terrified.
"That means they have been watching us."
Ethan noticed something near the floor.
A small piece of black fabric.
He picked it up.
"What is this?"
The officer examined it.
"Looks like it came from a jacket."
Claire looked around the room.
Then she noticed something.
One person was missing.
Her eyes widened.
"Where is Eleanor?"
Everyone turned.
The chair where Eleanor had been standing was empty.
The room exploded with whispers.
"She was just here."
"Where did she go?"
Claire felt her heart sink.
"No..."
Ethan looked at her.
"Claire?"
She shook her head.
"I don't know what to believe anymore."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Don't make assumptions."
"But we need to find her."
They searched the ballroom.
The hallway.
The library.
Then Ethan noticed something.
A hidden door behind an old bookshelf.
It was slightly open.
The officer reached for his flashlight.
"This wasn't supposed to be visible."
Daniel stared at the door.
"I haven't seen this room in twenty years."
Claire looked at him.
"What is it?"
Daniel’s face became pale.
"A place where this family kept its darkest secrets."
Ethan opened the door slowly.
Inside was a small hidden room.
Dust covered the furniture.
Old files filled the shelves.
And on the center table sat a single envelope.
Claire walked closer.
Her name was written on it.
Again.
She looked at Daniel.
"How many secrets are there?"
Nobody answered.
Claire opened the envelope carefully.
Inside was a handwritten confession.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then her face changed.
Because the person who wrote the confession was not a stranger.
It was someone she had trusted her entire life.
Claire whispered.
"No..."
Ethan stepped closer.
"What does it say?"
Claire looked up with tears in her eyes.
"The person who destroyed my family..."
"Is the person who raised me."
Everyone went silent.
Because there was only one person who fit those words.
Eleanor.
But before anyone could understand what was happening, a voice came from behind them.
"You should have never opened that door."
Everyone turned.
Eleanor was standing in the hallway.
Her face was emotionless.
May you like
But her eyes were filled with something far more dangerous.
Regret.
