Chapter 13: The Betrayal Standing Beside Claire

Chapter 13: The Betrayal Standing Beside Claire

The underground archive became completely silent.

The screen had gone black.

But the words remained burned into everyone’s mind.

"Make sure Claire never remembers what she saw."

Claire slowly turned around.

Her heart was pounding.

Her eyes moved across every face in the room.

Searching.

Hoping.

Begging that she was wrong.

But deep down...

She already knew.

Someone standing beside her had been part of the lie.

Someone she trusted.

Someone she never imagined would betray her.

Ethan noticed her expression.

"Claire."

She didn't answer.

Her eyes stopped on Eleanor.

Then on Daniel.

Then on Victoria.

Then finally...

They stopped on Adrian.

Adrian looked away.

And that small movement was enough.

Claire’s voice became quiet.

"It was you."

Nobody moved.

Adrian slowly looked back at her.

"Claire..."

"No."

Her voice became stronger.

"You knew."

"You knew what happened to me."

Adrian closed his eyes.

"I knew."

The room exploded with emotion.

Victoria stepped forward.

"You lied to us."

Adrian shook his head.

"I never wanted this."

Daniel’s face became filled with anger.

"Then why were you there?"

"Why did you help them?"

Adrian looked at the floor.

"Because I was trying to save Claire."

Claire stared at him.

"By taking my memories away?"

Adrian looked at her with pain.

"You were six years old."

"You were terrified."

"You couldn't sleep."

"You couldn't speak."

"You kept repeating the same thing."

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

"What did I say?"

Adrian hesitated.

Then answered.

"You said someone you loved had betrayed you."

The words hit Claire harder than she expected.

She looked around.

Someone she loved.

But who?

Adrian continued.

"The night your father disappeared, you saw something that broke you."

"You saw someone you trusted make a terrible choice."

Claire whispered:

"Who?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Because he knew the answer would destroy what was left of the family.

Ethan stepped forward.

"You need to tell her."

Adrian looked at him.

"You don't understand."

Ethan’s expression hardened.

"No."

"I understand exactly."

"She deserves the truth."

Adrian looked at Claire.

"I wasn't the one who ordered your memories erased."

"But I was the one who allowed it to happen."

Claire felt tears fall.

"Why?"

Adrian’s voice cracked.

"Because your grandfather threatened everyone."

"He threatened Daniel."

"He threatened Victoria."

"He threatened you."

"I thought if you forgot, you could have a normal life."

Claire shook her head.

"You stole my truth."

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

"And I regret it every day."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Eleanor quietly said:

"He wasn't the only one."

Everyone turned.

Claire looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

Eleanor stepped closer.

Her face showed exhaustion.

"It means Adrian was protecting you."

"But someone else was protecting the person responsible."

Daniel frowned.

"Who?"

Eleanor looked at Claire.

"The person you believed saved you."

Claire felt a chill.

Again.

Another secret.

Another betrayal.

"Who?"

Eleanor looked toward Ethan.

Everyone froze.

Claire stared at him.

Ethan looked shocked.

"What?"

Eleanor shook her head.

"I'm not saying Ethan did it."

"I'm saying someone used Ethan."

Claire looked confused.

"What are you talking about?"

Eleanor walked toward an old file cabinet.

She opened a drawer.

Inside was a photograph.

She handed it to Claire.

Claire looked down.

The picture showed a young Ethan.

Standing beside Claire.

Standing beside Daniel.

And standing beside another person.

A person Claire recognized immediately.

Her grandfather.

Ethan’s face changed.

"I don't remember that."

Eleanor nodded.

"Because your memories were altered too."

Claire looked at Ethan.

"Why were you there?"

Ethan looked terrified.

"I don't know."

He looked at Daniel.

"I swear I don't know."

Daniel studied the photograph.

Then he noticed something.

A symbol on Ethan’s jacket.

A symbol belonging to the Hawthorne family organization.

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

"Your father worked for my father."

Ethan looked confused.

"What?"

Daniel continued.

"Your family wasn't just connected to the Hawthornes."

"They were part of the inner circle."

Ethan stepped back.

"No."

"I would know."

Adrian shook his head.

"Not if someone made sure you didn't."

Claire felt overwhelmed.

The truth was becoming impossible to separate from the lies.

Then suddenly...

The underground door slammed shut.

Everyone turned.

The lock engaged automatically.

A red warning light flashed.

ARCHIVE SECURITY ACTIVATED.

The speakers above them came alive.

A familiar voice filled the room.

A voice they had heard before.

Evelyn.

"You were never supposed to find this place."

Claire looked up.

"Evelyn."

Her grandmother’s voice continued.

"But since you have..."

"I will finally show you the truth."

The screen turned back on.

A new video appeared.

This time, it showed the night Claire lost her family.

The night everything began.

Everyone watched silently.

Then the footage revealed something shocking.

Claire was not just a witness.

She was the reason the entire conspiracy started.

Because on that night...

Little Claire had discovered something nobody wanted anyone to know.

And now, twenty years later...

She was about to remember everything.
