Chapter 10: The Return of the Woman They Buried

Chapter 10: The Return of the Woman They Buried
The phone slipped slightly from Claire’s hand.
For a moment, she couldn’t speak.
She couldn’t process the words she had just heard.
Her grandmother was alive.
The woman everyone believed had died years ago was still out there.
Watching.
Waiting.

Knowing everything.
Ethan immediately stepped closer.
"Claire."
"Are you okay?"
Claire looked at him.
Her eyes were filled with disbelief.
"My grandmother is alive."
The entire room went silent.
Victoria looked shocked.
"That’s impossible."
Claire turned toward her.
"Why?"
Victoria struggled to answer.
"Because we were told she died."
Daniel’s expression became serious.
"Who told us?"
Nobody answered.
And that silence revealed another hidden truth.
The Hawthorne family had spent decades believing stories that were never verified.
Marcus slowly walked toward the table.
"This changes everything."
Ethan looked at him.
"You knew?"
Marcus shook his head.
"No."
"But it makes sense."
Claire stared at him.
"How does that make sense?"
Marcus looked at the old documents.
"Because your grandfather was never the only person controlling this family."
"There was always someone above him."
Claire felt a chill.
"Who?"
Marcus looked at her.
"Your grandmother."
The room became tense again.
Claire shook her head.
"No."
"Everyone keeps saying someone was controlling everything."
"But nobody tells me why."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Because the truth is complicated."
Claire looked at him.
"I think I deserve the truth."
Daniel nodded slowly.
"You do."
He looked toward the window.
"Your grandmother, Evelyn Hawthorne, built the foundation of this family’s power."
"She was brilliant."
"Intelligent."
"Respected."
"But she believed the Hawthorne name was more important than anything else."
Victoria added quietly.
"Even her own family."
Claire looked down.
"So she was the one behind it?"
Marcus answered carefully.
"We don't know yet."
"But she knows something."
"Something everyone else has been afraid to reveal."
Suddenly, the mansion security system activated again.
The screen on the wall turned on.
A video appeared.
Everyone froze.
Because the woman on the screen was the same woman from the phone call.
Evelyn Hawthorne.
Older.
Calm.
Powerful.
But very much alive.
She looked directly into the camera.
"Claire."
Everyone stared.
Her voice filled the ballroom.
"I know you are watching this."
Claire stepped closer to the screen.
Her heart raced.
Evelyn continued.
"I know the truth has finally started coming out."
"I know Victoria has returned."
"I know Daniel is standing beside you."
"And I know Eleanor has finally lost control."
Eleanor looked away.
The recording continued.
"But before you decide who the villain is..."
"You need to hear my side of the story."
Claire clenched her fists.
"My side?"
"You disappeared."
"You let everyone think you were dead."
Evelyn smiled slightly.
"I disappeared because I had no choice."
Claire looked confused.
"No choice?"
The video continued.
"The night your father vanished was not an accident."
"It was a battle."
"A battle between people who wanted to destroy the Hawthorne family..."
"And those who wanted to save it."
Daniel shook his head.
"She's rewriting history."
Evelyn continued.
"Claire, you believe you know what happened."
"But you only know what others wanted you to believe."
The screen suddenly showed an old photograph.
A photograph of Claire as a child.
Standing beside her grandfather.
And another person.
Someone nobody expected.
Ethan stepped closer.
"Who is that?"
Claire looked carefully.
Her face changed.
Because she recognized the person.
It was someone from her childhood memories.
Someone she had forgotten.
Someone who had been erased from her life.
Claire whispered:
"That's..."
Before she could finish, the video changed.
A final message appeared.
"Come to the Hawthorne Facility alone."
Everyone stared.
Ethan immediately shook his head.
"No."
"You are not going there alone."
Claire looked at him.
"But if she knows the truth..."
"She may be the only person who can explain everything."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Claire, this could be a trap."
Claire looked at the screen.
"I know."
"But I've spent my whole life being protected by lies."
"I'm done hiding."
Victoria grabbed her daughter’s hand.
"We go together."
Claire nodded.
But before they could make a plan, another sound interrupted them.
A loud crash came from upstairs.
Everyone turned.
The officer reached for his weapon.
"Someone is inside."
Ethan looked toward the staircase.
"How is that possible?"
The mansion doors were locked.
The security system was active.
Then footsteps echoed from above.
Slow.
Heavy.
Coming closer.
Everyone watched as a figure appeared at the top of the stairs.
Claire froze.
Because she knew that face.
The person standing there was the same person from the old photograph.
The person she had forgotten.
The person who knew every secret about her childhood.
The stranger looked down at Claire.
And smiled.
"Hello, Claire."
"You probably don't remember me."
"But I remember you."
The room went silent.
May you like
Then the stranger spoke the words that changed everything.
"I was there the night your father disappeared."
