Chapter 11: The Witness From Claire’s Lost Childhood

Chapter 11: The Witness From Claire’s Lost Childhood
The stranger’s words echoed through the mansion.
"I was there the night your father disappeared."
Claire stared at the person standing at the top of the stairs.
Her mind searched desperately for a memory.

A face.
A name.
Anything.
But nothing came.
Only confusion.
Only a strange feeling that she had seen this person before.
Ethan stepped in front of Claire.
"Who are you?"
The stranger slowly walked down the stairs.
Each step felt heavier than the last.
"My name is Adrian."
"I was your father’s closest friend."
Daniel looked shocked.
"Adrian?"
The man stopped.
"You remember me."
Daniel’s expression changed.
"I thought you were gone."
Adrian gave a sad smile.
"Everyone thought that."
Claire looked between them.
"Why does everyone keep disappearing?"
Nobody answered immediately.
Adrian finally reached the bottom of the stairs.
He looked at Claire.
"When you were a child, you trusted me."
Claire frowned.
"I don't remember."
"I know."
His voice became softer.
"That was the point."
Claire felt a chill.
"What does that mean?"
Adrian looked toward Eleanor.
"Tell her."
Eleanor remained silent.
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
"Tell me what?"
Eleanor looked like she was carrying the weight of the world.
"After the night your father disappeared..."
"We realized you had seen something."
Claire’s breathing slowed.
"Something important."
Eleanor nodded.
"You were too young to understand everything."
"But you remembered pieces."
Adrian continued.
"You remembered voices."
"Faces."
"Conversations."
"Enough to expose the person responsible."
Claire looked at him.
"So they erased my memories?"
Adrian looked down.
"Yes."
The room became silent.
Claire felt tears forming.
"How?"
Eleanor answered quietly.
"Your grandfather had doctors who worked for him."
"People who could make things disappear."
Claire stepped back.
She looked at everyone.
"My own family did this to me?"
Victoria immediately walked toward her.
"Claire..."
"No."
Claire shook her head.
"I need answers."
She turned to Adrian.
"What did I see that night?"
Adrian took a deep breath.
Then he reached into his coat.
He pulled out an old notebook.
Claire recognized it immediately.
A childhood drawing.
Her drawing.
She took it slowly.
On the page was a picture of the Hawthorne mansion.
Three people stood outside.
A little girl.
A man.
And another person.
But the third person had been crossed out.
Claire stared.
"I drew this?"
Adrian nodded.
"You drew it the morning after your father disappeared."
"What did it mean?"
Adrian looked at the drawing.
"You said someone came to the house that night."
Claire looked at him.
"Who?"
Adrian hesitated.
Then he answered.
"The person you thought was helping your family."
Claire’s heart stopped.
"Who?"
Adrian looked toward Eleanor.
Everyone followed his eyes.
But Eleanor shook her head.
"No."
"I didn't do this."
Adrian looked at her.
"I didn't say you did."
The room went silent.
Claire realized something.
Everyone had been assuming the same thing.
But maybe the truth was different.
Adrian continued.
"The person who destroyed this family was someone much closer."
Claire looked at the notebook again.
"Why can't I remember?"
Adrian looked at her sadly.
"Because you weren't supposed to."
He opened another page.
Inside was a message written in a child’s handwriting.
Claire read it slowly.
"I know who hurt Daddy."
Her hands began shaking.
Below that sentence was another line.
"I have to tell Ethan."
Everyone froze.
Ethan looked confused.
"Tell me?"
Claire looked at him.
"I wrote your name."
Ethan stared at the page.
"But I didn't know you when you were a child."
Adrian looked at him.
"Yes, you did."
The room became silent.
Ethan’s expression changed.
"What are you talking about?"
Adrian looked at him.
"You were there too."
Claire turned toward Ethan.
"Ethan?"
He stepped backward.
"No."
"I would remember."
Adrian shook his head.
"You were young."
"Your family was connected to the Hawthornes."
"You were brought there because your father worked with Daniel."
Ethan looked completely shocked.
"I don't remember any of this."
Adrian nodded.
"Because your memories were hidden too."
Claire stared at Ethan.
Another person.
Another secret.
Another missing piece.
The entire story was bigger than she imagined.
Suddenly, the phone on the table rang again.
Everyone froze.
Nobody wanted to answer.
Finally, Claire picked it up.
A familiar voice spoke.
Her grandmother.
Evelyn.
"You found Adrian."
Claire’s eyes widened.
"How do you know?"
Evelyn laughed softly.
"Because I know everything happening inside that house."
Claire gripped the phone.
"Why are you doing this?"
A pause.
Then Evelyn answered.
"Because the person you are looking for is not your enemy."
"Your enemy is someone you still trust."
Claire looked around the room.
The words felt terrifying.
Evelyn continued.
"Trust no one."
"Not even the people standing beside you."
The call ended.
Claire slowly lowered the phone.
Everyone looked at each other.
Because now there was only one question.
May you like
Who was still lying?
And how much of the truth had they not discovered yet?
