Chapter 2: The Letter From the Woman Who Vanished

Chapter 2: The Letter From the Woman Who Vanished
The police arrived at Hawthorne Estate just minutes after the shocking incident.
Blue and red lights reflected across the massive windows of the mansion.
The guests who had arrived expecting an elegant evening now stood frozen in fear.
Nobody was talking about the celebration anymore.
Everyone was talking about Claire.

Everyone was talking about Eleanor.
And everyone wanted to know what was inside that envelope.
Ethan stood beside Claire as the officers entered the ballroom.
He refused to leave her side.
Claire was still shaken.
Her hands trembled as she stared at the old photograph.
The woman in the picture had the same eyes.
The same smile.
The same necklace Claire had seen in her childhood memories.
It was her mother.
The woman she had been told was gone forever.
An officer approached them.
"Can someone explain what happened here?"
Before Ethan could answer, Eleanor stepped forward.
"It was a misunderstanding."
Claire immediately looked at her.
"A misunderstanding?"
"You grabbed me."
"You pushed me."
The guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.
They had all seen what happened.
Eleanor’s face remained calm, but her eyes revealed something different.
Fear.
The officer looked around the room.
"We will need everyone’s statement."
The guests slowly began explaining what they saw.
One by one.
And every story pointed in the same direction.
Eleanor had lost control.
But Eleanor was not worried about the police.
She was worried about the envelope.
The letter.
The truth.
Ethan carefully opened the folded paper.
The handwriting was old but clear.
Claire watched his expression change as he read.
"What does it say?"
Ethan looked at her.
For a moment, he didn’t answer.
Claire’s voice became softer.
"Ethan."
"Please."
He handed her the letter.
Claire took a deep breath.
Then she began reading.
"My dearest Claire."
Her eyes immediately filled with tears.
The room disappeared around her.
"My little girl, if you are reading this, it means I was not able to come back when I promised."
Claire covered her mouth.
Her mother’s words continued.
"I need you to know one thing."
"I never abandoned you."
"I was forced to leave."
"I was afraid they would hurt you."
Claire looked up.
Her face turned pale.
"They?"
Ethan looked toward Eleanor.
Everyone followed his eyes.
Eleanor looked away.
Claire continued reading.
"The Hawthorne family knows what happened."
"They know why I disappeared."
"They know the truth about your father."
The room became completely silent.
A guest whispered.
"Her father?"
Another guest responded quietly.
"I thought Claire never knew who her father was."
Claire’s heart raced.
She looked at Eleanor.
"What does this mean?"
Eleanor didn’t answer.
Instead, she walked toward the envelope.
"You don’t understand what you’re reading."
Claire stepped back.
"No."
"I understand perfectly."
"You lied to me for twenty years."
Eleanor’s expression hardened.
"I protected you."
Claire laughed bitterly.
"Protected me?"
"You erased my entire life."
Ethan watched the two women carefully.
He knew there was more.
Something much bigger than a family argument.
The officer noticed the tension.
"Mrs. Eleanor, do you know Claire’s mother?"
Eleanor remained silent.
That silence said more than any answer.
Claire looked at her.
"You knew she was alive."
Eleanor finally spoke.
"Yes."
The entire ballroom gasped.
Claire felt like the ground beneath her disappeared.
"What?"
"You knew?"
Eleanor looked down.
"I knew."
Claire’s voice broke.
"All these years..."
"All these years you let me believe my mother left me?"
Eleanor’s eyes filled with regret.
"You were safer not knowing."
Claire shook her head.
"No."
"You just didn't want me to know."
Ethan stepped closer.
"Claire."
But she couldn’t stop.
The pain she had carried for decades was finally coming out.
"Where is she?"
Eleanor said nothing.
"Where is my mother?"
The silence lasted several seconds.
Then Eleanor whispered something that shocked everyone.
"She’s closer than you think."
Claire froze.
"What does that mean?"
Eleanor looked toward the entrance of the mansion.
Everyone turned.
The large wooden doors slowly opened.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Tired.
But familiar.
Claire stared at her.
Her breathing stopped.
The necklace around the woman’s neck matched the one in the photograph.
The woman looked at Claire with tears in her eyes.
"Claire..."
Claire couldn’t move.
She couldn’t speak.
Because standing in front of her was the person she had spent twenty years mourning.
Her mother.
Alive.
The guests watched as Claire took one slow step forward.
Then another.
But before she could reach her, Eleanor suddenly shouted.
"Stop!"
Everyone turned.
Eleanor looked terrified.
"Claire, you don't know what she came here to reveal."
The mysterious woman looked at Eleanor.
"You still haven't told her the truth?"
Ethan immediately stepped between them.
"What truth?"
The woman looked directly at Claire.
"The truth about why I had to disappear."
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
She whispered.
"Why?"
The woman took a deep breath.
"Because someone in this house tried to destroy our family."
Everyone looked around the room.
May you like
And slowly realized something terrifying.
The person responsible was still standing among them.
