Chapter 2: The Golden Cage

Two weeks later, the gates of the Thorne Estate closed behind the black armored SUV with a heavy, metallic clang.
Khloe sat in the back seat, staring out the tinted windows at the sprawling, manicured lawns. She wore a simple white cashmere sweater, her hands resting protectively over her swollen belly. Physically, the doctors said she had recovered. The baby was strong. But the bruise on her side had faded from dark purple to a sickly yellow, a constant reminder of the monster she had married.
When the car stopped at the front steps, the door was opened by the head butler, Henry. He refused to meet her eyes. The entire staff had been bought and paid for.
Khloe stepped into the grand foyer, the marble floors echoing beneath her boots. It was the same marble she had nearly lost her child on.
"Welcome home, darling."
Khloe froze. She looked up toward the sweeping grand staircase.
There, descending the steps like the lady of the house, was Isabella. She was wearing one of Marcus’s oversized dress shirts and nothing else, holding a mug of steaming coffee. She looked completely at home.
"What are you doing here?" Khloe asked, her voice dangerously quiet.
"Oh, Marcus didn't tell you?" Isabella smiled, taking a sip of her coffee. "With your... delicate condition, he thought you needed full-time support. He insisted I move into the guest wing to help manage the household while you rest."
It was a power play. A sick, twisted psychological game meant to break Khloe’s spirit. Marcus was rubbing his affair in her face, daring her to do something about it. He knew she had no money of her own, no powerful parents, no place to go. He thought she was trapped.
Khloe’s chest tightened, the familiar sting of tears threatening to spill. But then she remembered the cold, hard weight of the silver flash drive Uncle Richard had pressed into her palm before she left the hospital.
“Don't let them know you're fighting back until the knife is already at their throats,” Richard had whispered.
Khloe forced her muscles to relax. She let out a long breath and looked up at Isabella, pinning a mask of utter submission onto her face.
"I suppose that makes sense," Khloe said, keeping her voice devoid of emotion. "I am quite tired. If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to lie down."
Isabella’s smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second. She had expected screaming. She had expected crying. She wanted Khloe to throw a tantrum so she could run to Marcus and play the victim again. Khloe’s calm compliance completely threw her off guard.
"Of course," Isabella sneered, recovering quickly. "Try not to trip on the stairs."
Khloe walked past her in silence, ascending to the master suite. She locked the heavy mahogany door behind her and leaned against it, closing her eyes.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket. It was a text from an unknown number.

Khloe opened her laptop, her fingers flying across the keys. She wasn't just a pretty socialite. Before she married Marcus, she had been a forensic accountant. She had given up her career to play the role of the perfect billionaire’s wife. Now, she was going to use every skill she had to dismantle his empire brick by brick.

She logged into the secure server Richard had set up. The screen flooded with data. Shell companies. Offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. Wire transfers to Isabella’s private bank. Millions of dollars were being systematically siphoned out of Thorne Industries.
Marcus wasn't just a cheater. He was an embezzler. And Khloe was going to let him dig his own grave.
